You are supposed to have the key attached to the launch rod cap. It serves a couple purposes.

1. When you are at the launch pad and the cap is on, you know no one can press the launch button and have it ignite the engine. It also gives you a visual of where the rod end is.

2. When you take the key to go and launch, you remove the cap from the rod for a safe launch.

It's a fun hobby for kids and adults. I loved your first sky dart video when your son ran away! Classic.
