The troops are not required for Afghanistan. They are required for Iran! Look at the number of countries the US have invaded or control through puppet governments which surround Iran. Have a look on a map and you will see.
@Stueiro They can't go for Iran. Its just pressure politics! Ifs not in the corporate interest. Even if they go for it, its a WWIII, without a doubt. Neither China is going to allow all blockade of all possible routes to Central Asian energy resources, nor Russia is going to allow such great extent of imbalance of power in the region! Pakistan has already made it clear that there won't be any kind of support from Pakistan against Iran n its final!
Use of force in any means will not bring any long lasting results! Instead of increasing the troops number, build hospitals, schools, cinemas, pave roads, establish communication with ordinary people and LISTEN to their needs!! They don't need more destruction, but fair and easy life!!! Is that too much to ask for or the American military is too busy to pay attention to such basic needs of all human beings!???
I don't think General McChrystal is "embedding" anything. He said we need 40,000 US troops. If he thought we needed more I'm sure he would have said so. Why are you making something up to mislead the public. Just as in Iraq the Afghan forces will grow and take over. What is so hard to understand about that!
We invaded a country with a well armed population. That would be like someone invading the United States. We have been there for 8 years and it has gotten worse. Russians had around 150,000 troops and were there for over a decade. If you want to do this in 5 years it absolutely will take around 500,000 which we can't afford nor does the american people have the stomack for. Bring em home!
US will be crushed in Afghanistan, the graveyard of empires

You cannot win a war.....with so few troops compared to what they have access too.
It is foolish, and a waste of lives...
The only way to get ground there is to take 1 city and see if you can hold it...
Since we cannot use nukes, it is better to hold a city and prepare to divide the country
Kandahar is the city...........................................

However, I feel very sad for the innocent people being killed and for the American soldiers being killed.
With all my heart, I hate wars!!!!!

We can't win the war now. The Taliban have a near-limitless supply of new recruits from Pakistan's 200 million population, just across the border.
We can kill dozens - even hundreds - of them at a time, and they'll simply be replaced.
Realistically, we had until 2004 ( at the latest ) to secure Afghanistan. By 2006 it had become clear that we'd failed.

...... There is no way we'll send 500,000 troops that we don't have to Afganistan.
I'm so glad I am off the I.R.R. list.
