  • Can we have a video on LX5 vs S95 please?

    thank you =)

  • Do these cameras auto focus when in HD filming?

  • I really want the LX5 but it's too damn chunky. S95 it is then.

  • i was looking for a LX-5 / S95 comparison, couldnt find it. i guess this would give the same result. thanks for the video! i think ill take the lx5

  • what camera did you use to record this?

  • @crisconditioning Nikon D90 on a tripod.

  • What is the camera did you use to capture? thanks. :D

  • This is the most concise and coherent YouTube review addressing two exceptionally fine cameras... I also went with the S90; and I love it so much that I splurged and bought the S95. Congratulations on this informative and well executed presentation.

  • @1whitebutterfly Thank you for your kind words!

  • The s90 ranges from f/2.0 to f/4.9, not f/8.0 in case anyone didn't pick up on that.

  • @ProMarkChris you are so wrong. The maximum aperture is 4.9 on the telephoto end, and F8 is the smallest for wide or telephoto. That doesn't make sense to only have 2.0-4.9.

  • Can't go wrong either of these cameras.

I picked up an LX5 and I am blown away by the image quality and HD video.

  • Great comparison video! When we will have a "Panasonic LX5 vs. Canon S95" video? :-)

  • the quality of this video is really good :] what did you use to film?

  • v-eye-a = via

    not v-i-a

  • @JiggaBooJive haha actually you're wrong lol

  • I'm really interested in the new LX5 that will be coming out soon. I really like the fact that you can use the optical zoom with movies and that it has HD also that it has a pretty good wide angle and takes great Pictures. For me, those were all important and it still is a small size for all that it can do. The S90 was at the top of my "want list" until I was the LX5. Which is about 100. more but it does more. I also like the DMC TS7 which is a little less expensive then both of these.

  • Nice review. Thanks for posting this.

  • Waiting for the LX5, going to be whopper. S90 was my choice a week ago, but after giving it a good going at work, its just too small and the rear roller wheel is a pain in the ass, always changes settings by itself. S90s performance has been called a bit 'meh' but have to say i was impressed. We didnt just compare it on screens but actually printed stuff out. The noise reduction is really really impressive, but the fps and delay from taking one photo too the next are a bit poor.

  • what is the sucessor to the s90? the sx210?

  • @starsweet4 s95. it's out already

  • @codrutoctavian thanks.. yeah i heard it was coming out soon but didn't realize it was already out now!

  • I would be happier carrying an S90 rather than the LX3 mainly because it does not look out of place in social events.

  • Can you tell me how the s90 video looks played back on a TV screen compared to video from a HD pocket cam? Why does the video I see from the s90 look better than many of the HD videos I see on youtube? Sorry if this sounds silly but I don't anything about cameras and trying to figure out which on I want to buy. I'm leaning towards the s90 or sony tx7

  • @skjoyner I was thinking about the TX7, but the image quality is not as good as the S90, but it does have some really neat features. Personally when I buy a still camera, all I want it to do is to take still photographs, and the S90 clearly does this.

  • @oddworms For your use I'd go the S90 myself. It's a sweet little camera.

  • @skjoyner To be fair, I do not feel the S90 has good video mode, nothing compared to the Sony models, or even the SX210 IS. But then again, the photographic quality just leaves everybody standing. It's amazing how they managed to get such good quality in such a small device.

I use to have the SX210 IS, but I returned it because of the lack of night quality, now I am looking for a new camera.

  • @oddworms Also, I have watched some video shot with the S90 on youtube and me personally can not "see" any difference between it and alot of the HD video's on youtube. The quality looks plenty good to me for home video or posting to the internet.

  • @skjoyner I will probably go for the S90 purely on form factor and quality, a brilliant device for social events, and does not look expensive, so less fear of it being stolen.

I have also been looking at the TX7, which is a Sony Cybershot, a neat camera, but the quality is not the same as the S90. I do however love the panoramic modes it has to offer. I design websites, and at times I require panoramic photographs, so it kind of made my think.

  • @skjoyner The other trouble is, the TX7 only operated for about 1 hour of full-HD (1080i) on record mode before the battery dies on you. I do however love the panoramic feature, it's absolutely amazing. I did hear thought he quality is not really that good on panoramic, it's good, but not 10MP. They somehow crop the image. so the whole image is 10MP, but since this is a 180 degrees image, it's more like 3MP on every shot, combined. Do you get it?

  • @skjoyner It is looking like I am going to go for the S90, and I feel Sony will probably release another camera with the panoramic feature. If I need to do a website for a client which requires such a shot, I will probably buy another camera.

If you need any help deciding just let me know.

  • @oddworms Go for it. The s90 is an amazing camera for the price and will fit in your pocket. The video is still plenty good for internet blogging should you have the need to post video online.

  • I can't believe people hammer a guy for trying to make a helpful video. WTF?

I think it's worth mentioning that these two cameras aren't all that comparable. They try to achieve different things. The S90 is sort of a stripped down compact with the emphasis on a quality lens and sensor. It's about getting better image quality. The LX3 is more comparable to the sx210. You're paying for the cool features like zoom and hd video and giving up a little in IQ, particularly in low light situations.

  • @ScottLewis sorry dude I forgot to account for your eurotrash skinny jeans.

  • huh S90 can't ft in pants pocket outta know what ur saying before makng a live review

  • So LX3 is the winner?

  • You say the LX3's tethered lens cap is annoying, "though some folks have been able to modify other lens caps to fit in case you would potentially lose it [the tethered lens cap]." Is this an allusion to the popular Ricoh LC-1/JJC ALC-3 auto lens cap mods? Such auto cap mods are designed to *help you* lose the tethered OEM cap, precisely because it is so very obnoxious. The auto caps work and are a serious factor in LX3 usability. Your reference to them here has missed the point a bit. Tx.

  • i was choosing b/w s90 and lx3. thanks for the video it's useful. i went for the s90 and i am very happy with it. as i want a camera that fits into my pocket w/o bring my dslr out, it perform well in low light and its light. nevertheless LX3 is just purely sexYY!!!! both are awesome cameras and you won't make a wrong move by going for either one

  • the LX3 is still the best in the world

  • @Russ07 get real CANON G7

  • The S90 is more of a compact camera. You can put that in your pocket. The Panasonic is kinda like the Canon G11. I'd rather compare it to that one.

  • LX3 can shoot HD, zoom in video, has hot shoe, and S90 can't. External Flash greatly help camera for bounce flash much nature looks.

  • The S90 and LX3 were on my final list of which to buy and i went for the S90 as i want better low light capabilities which the S90 has. It was handy seeing your video which helped me make my decision. Thank you!!

  • just a note. the "720p HD" isn't actually HD it seems to be upscaled to 720p. having said that, it is still great for youtube and much much better than a webcam or cheap flip cam.

  • What is the range of aperture ? thx

  • Thanks, nice review

  • If you don't care about HD video, why bother having video at all? I use the HD video feature about 30% of the time on my LX3. Anyone who says "a camcorder is for video" obviously doesn't have a camcorder with a 24mm lens. The LX3 takes SICK video with VERY little noise (less than my HV30). Don't knock the need for digi-cam HD video until you have seen it on the LX3.

  • @peteismod do you use Class 4 or 6 SD card for HD vids? I have a C4 and wonder if it can handle it.

  • can you change the lense on the lx3?

  • Comment removed

  • Great review. I just bought one and I love it. True that if you want an HD go and buy a camcorder that's specifically designed to capture video. I love the photos that this camera takes and it's very easy to use.

  • I guess LX3 has wider lens by far, for me that matters a lot.

  • @akiertaharangszol to me quality parts matter the most! The canons feel like toys compared to Lumix materials and Hd Video does matter alot.

  • Thanks for sharing this video. Great insight into both cameras.

  • I believe consumers get caught up in the "HD" filming mindset. We're buying these great cameras for an obvious fact, SHOOTING PICTURES. I could care less whether or not the the camera has HD video capability or not. If the camera cannot shoot well textured photographs, then the HD is rendered useless.

  • I couldnt agree more with your comments!People are self obscessed with this HD video concept. They are buying a camera, for images,Canon have done right concentrating on imaging quality-Not Gimmicks. Most of these people dont even have the software/harware to deal with these massive HD files!I purchased the G11 which does not have HD,its produced unbelievable low light images for me,but i would say even the standard video is superb quality.I would also like an S90.

  • @TemplarReturns I shoot stills with a Nikon D300 and bought this camera purely because it has the best HD movie quality anywhere. It's awesome.

  • Who cares if the s90 doesn't have HD. Just as long as the photo quality is cutting edge

  • Thats what i believe as well. Canon kept the MPs down at 10MP but still retains the large ccd sensor; therefore soaking up all the visual details. The highlight for me the fast f/2.0 lens for dim photography. The G11 also has the same sensor size as it's smaller relative (s90) but the lens is a slightly slower f/2.8. Canon's aim here wasnt HD but cutting edge texture quality.

  • Nice comparison. If the s90 had a 24mm lens on the wide end and 720 HD video, then I'd get it tomorrow.

  • @LEXPIX same things are buging me :( Hopefully next gen clears that up!

  • would be better if it had good video, when you need to be discreet about taking pictures And filming, better that it is all in one and that it is the best it can be concerning image while recording, for example for reporting stuff, or detective activity, or interesting things happening on the spot, just change the mode AND YOU ARE FILMING!! GREAT!!

  • if the s90 had 720p I would buy that for sure, the lens cap I would find annoying. the s90 feels much better in your hand then the LX3. I suppose I'll wait for the next versions of these....

  • I agree.... S90 with HD video = #1 compact camera (so howz about it Canon?) I'm gonna wait too...

  • Thanks for the review! I just bought the canon rebel T1i and so am looking for a nice little compact backup that will produce crisp pics when the rebel is too bulky to bring along.

  • Thanks a bunch for this review! I've been considering one of these two. I'm thinking the LX3.

  • cool review. Its really odd that the S90 doesnt have HD, not that I will use video. But for the price you pay you would expect to have HD considering cheaper canon compacts do have HD video.

  • I went with S90 since I can literally slip it in my jean pocket. So far so good, shoots raw and everything. Only downside is without good video capability.

  • Aperture priority doesn't do much on any of these when it comes to DOF. I'd be surprised if there's more than two actual physical settings. Probably only f/2.8 and f/8 or similar.

Nice video, answers a lot of questions. Thanks!

  • I picked up the S90 and its a very good camera. It's well made and a good performer, punching above its weight, definitely. I give it two thumbs, way up!

    No HD video? Big deal.

  • @sailcat9 ur right.. its a camera.. not a camcorder..

  • Thats for posting this. ITs exactly what i was after. The canon really is alot smaller. Pity theres no 720p

  • What a letdown, Canon.... no HD? What was the design team thinking? With HD, the S90 would be THE world's #1 compact camera... hands down. And I shoot a lot of Porn, so need at least XVGA detail... I have an issue with LUMIX's white balance.... Canon gets it right.

  • Thank you, that was a great review and it helped. I have a DSLR and I want something that is small that has advance features that I can carry around when I don't have the tank camera with me. I am going for the S90. Cheers

  • i got the s90

    yesterday

    it's a fun little

    thing

  • The S90 cannot even do HD video.

  • that doesn't matter to everyone

  • Thanks dude, just what I've been looking for.

  • Thanks, answers a few questions for me. Have the LX3, a great camera, but slightly too big to go everywhere. Good work!

  • Great review. I tried both for a week and ended up returning the Canon, the LX3's image quality is a lot better and 24mm wide lens makes a big difference. As far as the lens cap, I bought a Ricoh LC-1 online for $10. Well worth it.

  • I just tried the S90 and returned it mostly because I was insecure about the picture quality. But also the rear contol ring that flims around. Yet, I loved the size - and the automatic lense cap! And I don't see reviews backing up your statement that the LX3 image quality is better.

  • Nice vid bro. Wow the lx3 is big I'll buy

    The s90....

  • Thanks for the review man, I was looking at the canon s90 and lx3. I think Im going to get the canon, I have had canon in the past and their really good quality, very durable. good picture quality as well.

    Thanks

  • Wow you sound like a real gem. Actually I know I'm not qualified to talk on image quality and will leave that to the pro photographers, but I couldn't find anything that even showed the two devices side by side. That's why my first statement was that this was based on form factor only.

  • youre an ass man, you want a detailed review go read a mag

  • Also, saw a video saying that the video would not auto focuse on the S90, did you happen to see that with yours?

  • I haven't tried the video mode yet. I will take a look and get back to you.

  • Plan on buying the S90 soon, thanks for the info!

I know you said you didn't buy it for video, but sure wish someone would just go over it a bit. I went into BestBuy and checked it out, even though it's not HD the little playback on the camera itself looked way better then the others I checked out.

  • thanks, a really good review. I wish that the s90 did hd video.

  • Great review, I posted a few video reviews on the S90 and people really do want to compare these two camera's together.

I'll make sure I add a link from my video to yours.

  • Thanks!
