this was the best road america race ever. just when i thought it was over you see unser jr lose his engine and andretti scream by to take the win. and his teammate christian along in 2nd place for the ole 1,2 finish for kmart/halvoline team. bravo!
Hate correct ya, Michael's teammate Christian Fitipaldi didn't finish this race. He fell out near Canada Corner with engine/gearbox problems. Rahal finished 2nd and Zanardi (Polesitter) finished 3rd.
Michael Andretti and Christian Fitipaldi did have a 1&2 finish at Detroit (Belle Isle) not at RA.
and actually I was confusing it with that time when I think it was Michael that gave Christian a ride back to the pits on his car and I think it was this race actually on the victory lap
They were interviewing Robbie Gordon after he was out of the race with engine trouble, IIRC. He completely dissed Ford. After his interview Varsha said, "that crackling sound you hear is the sound of bridges being burned..." ROFL! Robbie hasn't changed--he is still a jerk!
Being an Unser Jr. fan, I was running for the start-finish line to watch our man win. When I heard he retired in Canada Corner, I couldn't be bothered and was in the start-finish tunnel when they went across the line. I was bummed. And too young to drink :(
I remember that one. Weird, but odd. The lead changing hands like a pack of cigarettes. Cars bursting into flame all over the place. A whole buncha the lead cars were out before it was over, as I recall.
blormp1 i think that that was 1996 because in 98 Mike and pt got together. then in 97 i think that pt and mike got together as well there so i think that it was 96 but any one who could Confirm the answer. good post IcedBudweiser.
Michael Andretti was the best driver of his time(which I have no clue as to why he retired early) and the best rivalry of all time was Mi. Andretti/Al Unser Jr...
I couldnt agree more Michael was the Man! I sure wish he was still racing today because he was always entertaining to watch. Yup Mi Andretti vs. Al Unser Jr. was the best rivalry of all time. in the best era of open wheel racing where they raced on all the best tracks with all the top drivers and the fastest and best cars in the late 80s and 90s. There was some tough competition and real good racing in those days and thats what open wheel needs to bring back that excitment that it once was
is that bob varsha commentating?

Parker Johnstone got cartwheeled and this is the same accident that Michael Andretti had two years later.
I don't believe Al Unser Jr. has blown his Merc engine at Canada Corner.
The same thing happened to race leader Mark Blundell at the same corner back in 1997.

I was at this race. I miss those days.
Now we don't get open wheel racing at RA wich is a crime. Sad days for open wheel racing period.

That was the first entire season I watched, I wasn't been able to remind where Al Unser jr. lost the race in the last lap, thanks.
BTW anybody noticed they removed the bridge after Canada corner? at last, Memo Gidley had a huge crash there in 2001.

Yes imola94 --- it's like F1 in the 80's. It was the time in the 80's the driver has won the race and not the car like today.
And at Indy or Champcar the drivers also win the race and not the car. Champcar ist the real racing!
It's not a computer game like F1 !!!

Poor Al Unser Jr!
Would be nice if indycars were to return to Road America.

Reminds me of Hakkinen in Spain '01 slowing to a halt a few corners to the finish line gifting the win to Schumacher!

The best thrilling Race in 1996! Andretti's unexpected 34th victory!
At least Champcar4ever may or may not have to post this! IceBudweiser You are like Champcar4ever posting the good old indycar days... Great Video!
Looking forward on seeing another one hopefully, in the meantime I'll see if Champcar4ever has another video poseted!
