I did this today on a MY07 2007 WRX Impreza. It's slightly different to the STi. One trick is to use a strong neodymium/hard-drive magnet behind a rag or tissue, it is stronger than the magnet on the drain plug, and will just pull the shavings right off the plug. I had to put the car up on ramps to get at the plugs, I tried getting the plugs out with the car level, but you can't get decent torque, as the angles are pretty awkward and there is a sway bar there too. Castrol SAF-XA fully synthetic.
@shades2 STi's have LSD by the way, normal WRX Imprezas have non-LSD rear diff. The advantage is greater traction through turns. The LSD is heavier, and more complex than a non-LSD (it's almost like a mini clutch), and should probably be serviced every 2 years to be safe.
The MY06 has a limited slip rear diff and requires a special additive. MY07 uses Torsen diff no additive needed. The add comes all in one from Subaru part # K0904AA080 LSD oil Subaru.
Hey bro. im going to buy a new car.... how do you feel about the 2011 STI sedan?? i want a reliable, fast, good looking car and this makes it on my list.
i read about people saying its super reliable some say it starts burning oil or what not. and i dont know about a boxer or rotary engine just because not alot car makers use them which makes me feel it might be un reliable
@Sandeep9201 subarus are great cars in general. very reliable and packed full of power with the turbos. mine hasnt seen any oil burn whatever. boxer engines and rotary engines are not even close to the same thing. rotary engines basically suck with reliability due to the way they work. a boxer engine is similar to a "v" or inline engine, just that the pistons go back and forth like a boxers arms rather than in a "v" shape or straight up and down like an inline. id def. recommd the subaru
you have the best videos on youtube, congrats! everyone talks about mods & bullshit, but no one mentions routine maintenance. huge thumbs up bro, can't say it enough. once i start residency, i'm getting an sti.
@krossF thanks man. yeah that used to be me in high school. i guess i got old lol, and now i just do maintenance stuff. modding is kinda over rated these days and a huge hassle
my 2011 sti is leaking oil from rear diff. Only 10k miles on it. Is this a known problem? Second time its happening to me. Im taking in this monday for service. Hope those basterds fix it or else im going to write a complaint to Subaru of America. Im so pissed!!!
@nukem384 hey bro thanx for ur tutorials they're really helpful but I've also heard alot that motul is also very good for tranny and diff, In ur opinion would u put motul?
@lbori1 if i was competition racing all the time or something like that id def want to upgrade the tranny fluid. motul is not bad, but im more a red line type of guy myself
I just finished doing my '02 WRX. I doubt it had been changed before. Took like 15 minutes to get the fill plug out. I didn't have room for a lot of leverage and I didn't want to damage it with an air impact gun, so I put the ratchet on and smacked the handle with a hammer to get a bit of impact happening to break the rust. The magnet was nice and clean though; no metal to speak of.
bought my car used.5 speed 2003 ex honda element with 130k miles. previous owner never changed tranny fluid. i heard its bad to change it or flush it. is that true?because after the crud is flushed out, then your trans might start to slip or break.what should i do?
next time use a water bottle with a sport top to fill the diff. Fill the bottle with fluid put the sport top on then squeeze the fluid out of the bottle into the diff. repeat a second time and it's full.

Is there a reason why you didn't take the main fill bolt off instead you took the center senor part off?
Thanks,

@NewShockerGuy didnt have a socket big enough for the main bolt.

I thought you were supposed to remove the fill plug first to release pressure, then the drain plug.

They make a funnel that you fill from the top and has a tube at the bottom. Get it.

The diff fluid was really dirty. How many miles did you have on the diff before you changed it?
mikeylee2001 1 year ago
@mikeylee2001 i dont drive my sti that much, so it only had like 18k on it. i believe the interval is every 30k
