I'm really trying to figure out how this could ever be useful for something. Other than maybe replacing a standard treadmill "walker" exercising machine. Or maybe if the little robots moved so fast, and would continuously loop so quickly that you could be walking at regular speed, but the robots are actually gliding on the ground twice as fast... but then again, why not just use a robot that you can sit comfortably on with wheels? I dunno. At least he's having fun building'em I guess.
@abermants yes i watched it, and from what i saw it looks like the tiles are meant to allow a person to walk forward without actually changing their position, just like a treadmill. of course it doesn't work like a treadmill in any way, and you can freely change direction with these, but they still serve the same basic function: they allow people to accelerate while staying in the same place
"With robot tiles, peoples location do not change, even if they are walking." - Theres no fucking point in walking if it doesnt get you anywhere?! Looks cool but theres no use for it...
it doesn't have to its just displaying technology. They won't actually release this its just research. God these people who say everything is useless starts to piss me off.
this is so fucking useless, it's only intended to get game-addicts less fat! and you know what they'll do, sell their game tiles because they're to lazy to move around, all they wanna do is sit behind a screen all day and do nothing to improve our society, trying to get addicts skinny?not realistic, face it, america is fat, what are you gonna do 'bout it
In the future they could have thousands of small versions of those robots that could also stack on top of one another so they form three dimensional structures to simulate unstable terrain or stairs.
there was a prototype of a huge robotic arm had that 9 points of rotation and could move 360 degrees any way on tv last night. only it had a seat with a huge curved screen infront of it at the end of the arm.... the ultimate arcade machine of the future, maybe?
I dont know about this model making a virtual game, if i wanted to change direction ever, i would have to sit in the middle of the battle zone typing in angles for the tiles to move in every time i felt like doing something different, and notice how long it took for you to be able to take a new step? it seems like they have alot of work to do before they make any game out of it
its clearly in its early stages. give it ten years and watch what it can do. it could possible even allow you to put a full car on it and make it seem like your driving if they work on this right.....
So this is a system... to give people the feeling that they're walking... but not actually going anywhere? :) I'm joking. It's giving the feeling of moving, without going anywhere. That's curious indeed.
no technology is useless or has no point as some of you mentioned, because other ideas might spawn from a seemingly-useless technology. I think this can be used in entertainments like games, cinema, rescue robots (guides a person through water, fire, etc), stairs? but yes, it needs to be able to forward the person, and not let him stay at the same spot.
Also guys think about this in a True Virtual reality game where your movement = the characters movement how else could you stop from bumping into walls in your house and without marching in place? Some technology like this would change one of the fundamental flaws with virtual reality.
Technology is only going to get better. I'd say that about the time Halo 10 comes out (and I'm hoping the series gets that far), the Master Chief's MJOLNIR armor suit will exist in the real world.
This has serious potential. For a far future video game. You put on so TV glasses and walk around in virtual space. Depending on the type of ground in the game, they could change the material you step on. They could try to speed the wheels up, or increase the area of the tiles. I can see this going a long way if it taken to it's advantage.
I can imagine these being thousand of small tiles under your feet that quickly get below your foot where you are about to step. This way it looks like you are walking and the tiles are so small that you don't notice them. and fast so that you could run.
Why not just have the floor itself move in the direction the person is walking, similar to one of those moving airport walkways, except it would move in every direction???
This idea doesn't make much sense as it would be easy for the user to fall off while wearing a VR headset.
ill tell you. a similar product if not the same was made for alot of reasons one of them was to have them in public places like a libary.... u would go to a machine put 1 dollars in get a card take the card to a place were these robots dock to charge and put the card infront of the robot and it would folow you around the libary (for a period of time, its like ur renting the robot) and everytime u see a book u like u can sit down and read it and when u are done it will go back to its place...
I think you're talking about something completely different - a single transportation robot that would take you around a certain space, like a library. I think that's a good idea.
This idea however, wouldn't make much sense in any public place IMO, considering they don't actually take you anywhere lol the whole point is to keep you in one spot as you walk.
Can you imagine hundreds of these things cluttering the floorspace of a library or other public place? Not a good idea.
Yeah true, you make a good point. ;) I guess it's a good idea for near future VR, but it'll eventually be useless. In the somewhat distant future (25-30 years), VR will be achieved from within our central nervous system itself, and won't require any headsets or any external gear.
You could compare it to a lucid dream - you'll be able to walk, touch, smell, etc, just like in real life, and won't be able to tell the difference between it and reality.
speed it up and you got yourself a great gameshow, try to get out of the box withough the boxes picking you up and taking you back to the center.... id play that
That should be cool on water.

this reminds me of those anime'(s) where the world just moves below who's walking..
o.o you put up monitors, and you could navigate a 3D environment, and you'd feel like you were actually walking through the environment..

if it gets further enhancements, its most likely going to be used for gaming systems or possibly rehabilitation programs.

Great way to create pavements where we want to preserve nature, perhaps in the future we could have swamps as our parks thanks to these tiles.
