I don't think violin is classified as a monophonic instrument - doesn't have the same abilities as piano, for sure, but double stops of every interval from min 2nds to major 10ths is an integral part of a violinist's arsenal, not to mention chords and arpeggiation.
@luveedoves43 totally agree ... but it is so so beautiful ... bellisima ... the talent, much .. much clarity ... by god ... hopefully this magnitude had fiddlers here in Argentina ... by god .. . I love it!
Is there a sudden cut/edit at around 2:02? I know she has a good bow arm, but literally one moment her arm is in one position, and the next it's in another... I haven't quite convinced myself that it's not because she's just fast, but I'm also not convinced that was real time =P
Hilary, I always appreciate how much care you take to articulate difficult pieces/passages. The composers' intent or musicality can so easily get lost, but by staying in control you're able to tell a difficult story well.
I'm not a big fan of her interpretation of this piece. If you examine the poem behind the music it has a panicky aura as it's of a father carrying his dying son. For that reason I think it should be kept at "presto" as is originally written in the score as far as I know and shouldn't be slowed down. Don't get me wrong, Hahn is an amazing violinist. I just don't like how she interprets this piece.
If a little more gals and a little less guys listened to classical music, Manrico Padovani's Erlkönig would get more than 1/40 of the views pretty Hilary has on this piece.
To make things clear, I believe Hahn is a hugely talented musician and I am not saying Padovani's performance is better. But at least he takes his risks and plays Presto. He deserves a little more comparative attention I believe.
@alexdrudigmail I have the feeling that Padovani plays this piece without the least bit of emotion. He plays it presto just to show off. Hilary Hahn is taking a risk when she's not playing it as it's written. She dares to add her own style to the piece, to interpret it. "Pretty" Hilary blows Manrico away, and this comes from a 'gal'.
"-I know, I'll compose a pice for four violins -Mr. Schubert, we have only one violinist -Well... make him play the four violins at the same time" That's how it happened haha.
I would really like to hear Chinchari - Chuchuliga played by her. I know in western Europe complex intricate pieces are favorite but Chuchuliga unique in its own.
@chantalbernard Actually i did some research, and it seems she's releasing this piece in her new CD. The thing is, I'm really sorry, you took me by surprise and didn't save any link to prove what i'm saying. So you can simply have some faith and believe me, or find it yourself. Although there's also a posibility for me to be mistaken because of some misreading I did. I hope it was helpful ^-^
@chantalbernard When I looked it was some time ago—I may not have been too thorough— just checking iTunes and Google. I know there should be a discography list online. Anyhow, I don't know much about these things and I may have also tried the Deutsche Grammophon site. Nonetheless, I am very happy that you found out this will be on her new CD. Good news, thanks for writing to me.
@natebaglyos... dude what are you talking about? Yes this is! Schubert's Original is Op. 1 (edited 3 times before he officially published it), but Ernst's "Caprice" arrangement is Op. 26!
Her tempos tend to be on the slower side, but its nice and clean. I can hear all of the harmonics:) Awesome job! I shall tackle this one of these days, when I have some spare time. It'll probably take me a whole year to work it up to anything near this tempo...haha
Each time I listen to Hilary she makes more and more music... of course technique is not a problem for her, but don't you guys think she's getting better and better as a musician?? BRAVO Hilary!
@roommaster I would think that opposite that of an olympic swimmer, that fact might allow her to stay still and in place easier due to the extra weight. it's tactical.
@bitcheznhos: Maybe it's the pubic hair, that makes her move, due to inavoidable itches? We should definately give her a poke on this topic/our research.
Also check the porn sites, for possible nude pics... just to be sure ;-)
I love the way she is certain to attack each note with good intonation and does not sacrifice technique for speed. I prefer her interpretation of nearly everything. (Maybe joshua bell on mendelssohn concerto. his sautille is the best around). I started playing a little over a year ago. It is very hard, but I would still rather practice than eat most of the time. :) I don't see that I will ever be a virtuoso, but I'm gonna play come hell or high water :) Come back to alabama hilary... I will come
@Kaughphie No, play for the love it. You'll get to the level you want to get to. Have fun, learn different styles. It'll keep you interested for years to come.
i prefer the interpretation of kristof barati, she play so good , but kristof pay attention for every note, and dramatizes too better, check out some videos of him, especially the first bach's sonata
Hilary is simply becoming or has become the virtuoso violinist of her generation. Always clean, austere yet passionate her playing is unlike anyone else. She has established her voice amongst the all time greats. And, hers is a voice to be heard! Bravo, Hilary!
I've seen her play this in person, it was just as perfect there, and I can assure you there were no breaks. (and it was a second encore after a full concerto, so it was all from memory, after 30 straight minutes of playing)
The break is probably just a video/sound syncing problem, the audio is a smidge off throughout the entire video.
I like commented classical music. But this piece is not the hardest because of the 4 different voices, because narrator/father/son/erlking dont sing/speak at the same time but at different parts of the poem/song. It is due to the fact you have to play the piano part to the voice part and a pianist has 10 fingers while a violinist as only 4 fingers and 4 strings for the notes. And its hard to strike more than 2 strings with the bow at a time, esp. in this tempo.
@aferrante4 Yes, but if you "roll" the bow, it allows you to make it sound like all 4 strings are being played, in essence, its really a elongated arpeggio, but sounds like a chord.
@117CamBam if you hear the original voice/piano, it goes this fast; perhaps it seems etude-ish because the violin can't sing the lyrics. This would be hard to listen to on violin if it wasn't durchkomponiert. Also, keep in mind the story--a galloping horse, desperation, fear, etc.. Besides, it'd be impossible to play all the notes if it were slower--the momentum of the bow is what makes it possible to strike more than two strings in one go. Have you heard it played slowly?? O.o
@rimonino I think you may have misunderstood my comment. I was saying I've heard it played faster, but I think Hahn's relatively slower tempo is perfect.
I grew up on the Kremer. It is very good, but she plays it like Schubert, which is a supreme challenge. Playing Ernst and Paganini is technically challenging, but so many players miss the most important challenge: both composers thread lyrical lines throughout the technical fireworks. Great athleticism is one achievement. Technique is the application of that athleticism toward the realization of artistry.
the peice is fairly simplistic when you play through it a few times. They hardest part about any piece is getting what the composer wants out to the listeners. Hahn has done this perfectly all her life, and continues to. Many other people just play as fast as they can, but the greatest musician understands that slower is harder...
omg! i totally wanna learn to play this piece! she plays it the best:D i get goosebumps everytime! her spicatto is very even...thats hard to control so well!
@TheViolinist1001 yeah. For my senior recital I was singing this piece, so one of the violin performance majors thought it would be interesting to perform it as well and have a little discussion at student lecture day... two days later she showed me the sheet music. Her exact words were "how...how....wait....what?..... can you?... 4 staves?"
@TheViolinist1001 I asked her last night how long it took to learn to play this and she said "A while. It mostly took a long time to figure out how to physically hit all the notes."
@TheViolinist1001 even not being a violinist I'm asking the same "HOW THE HELL?"...and I just don't ask if "Is this possible?" because Ms Hahn just show me that is possible indeed! lol

It's not very fair to her putting a dvd fragment on YouTube. :(
But it's very beautiful played. I love Hilary Hahn. :)

the peice is fairly simplistic when you play through it a few times. They hardest part about any piece is getting what the composer wants out to the listeners. Hahn has done this perfectly all her life, and continues to. Many other people just play as fast as they can, but the greatest musician understands that slower is harder...

@TheViolinist1001 yeah. For my senior recital I was singing this piece, so one of the violin performance majors thought it would be interesting to perform it as well and have a little discussion at student lecture day... two days later she showed me the sheet music. Her exact words were "how...how....wait....what?..... can you?... 4 staves?"
Long story short: Hilary Hahn is incredible.

@TheViolinist1001 I asked her last night how long it took to learn to play this and she said "A while. It mostly took a long time to figure out how to physically hit all the notes."

@TheViolinist1001 even not being a violinist I'm asking the same "HOW THE HELL?"...and I just don't ask if "Is this possible?" because Ms Hahn just show me that is possible indeed! lol
