As a child I remember The Queen St Gang tv show-I was actually trying to find footage of it.It was based on a book I had from Chip Club(!!!) called The Case Of The Silver Egg by one Desmond Skirrow. This track is truly amazing, totally far and wigged out! Great to find something new and groovy by accident!
Altough he used to say "Soul Thing", THIS is the version that he opened the 2:00PM Sunday afternoon show on WNEW FM here in The Big Apple with. This was Rosco's theme song for that time slot for a few years......... 102.7 WNEW NY who else remembers????
I 've found that Arzachel is more expensive to get. I have the three Egg albums on cd and they are right now available on Amazon for less than $15 each new. Arzachel can set you back $35 to $40 for just one cd.
@Yeivo The Italian label Akarma released two versions of Arzachel too, one's pinky-red and the other's blue. They're unofficial releases, they never asked for permission to press them! In other words they made their own bootlegs. I managed to get the original LP on the Evolution label from 1969 for about $70 on ebay. Just depends who's watching it at the time I guess...
There are some great Groundhogs Akarma cds too. I bought mine at a Groundhogs gig! Official bootleg sorta thing!
@deepindercheema I must admit, I totally agree with you (concerning the sleazebag label). Who gives them the right to press up the record etc etc? Though at the same time LOADS of people are desperate to get a copy for themselves, but yeah, the sleazebags cash in in this circumstance. I thought it was rather amusing buying the Groundhogs Akarma cd direct from TS McPhee at their gig, apparently the label sent them to the band, so I guess they're trying to make good in their own way.Hey-ho...! =O)
for a week now, I go to work, I get back, and then I go out for a jog or I just do some workout at home, I eat, I go out again, I smoke 1 joint or two and I come home once again to listen to this....I would say for a week I felt I really love life...nice trip everyone!
Do what I did and pick up the LP re-issue...it's great. The whole album is worth a listen. Here are the chords for organ and piano: (Main riff: A F G A) (Chorus Riff: A# E A C D F A) (Breakaway Riff: A G A G A G F#.......F# C#m F# C#m F# C#m D#) .....then back to A# F G A........jam on!!!!
Hey, this song makes me want to picnic outside on a blanket on my grass. I could listen to this eat sandwhiches , laugh with friends and slowly fall into a trance.
Comprised of what was then the band Uriel, this was the earliest formation of Steve Hillage and Dave Stewart. the music is a head above most other psych rarities, and the four musicians later achieved marginal success within the '70s progressive rock "Canterbury scene".
The record itself featured some of the most explosive psychedelia by an English group. The sound of sustained keyboard and guitar passages are full blown drawn-out psychedelia of the highest order.
Great tune - very clean and modern. The song was originally done by Keith Mansfield. If you check Youtube for him or "Funky Fanfare", you'll find it (great tune also!). And if you google "Uriel", you'll find more about this band, Arzachel.
A version of this toon was used for kids TV show 'the Queen Street Gang' The opening credits featured the gang on a tramploline in slow-motion against a brassy, more uptempo version of this particular rendition. '68/69?
@sonicavenga Thanks this is the closest that anyone has indicated a single fact about the Queen St Gang. I wonder if KPM supplied the sound recording, or just gave permissions copyrights etc
This was the theme tune for the show of the same name. I think it was more uptempo on the show (it *was* 40 years ago). I'd love to see an episode of the show again.
Wow,this is very cool! I can't believe I am still discovering these great prog bands from the late 60's/70's!! It seems like there was an indefinite amount of creativity back then.
the tune is composed by keith mansfield. He is a Library music mogul, and the tune resides at Keith Prowse Music (KPM)The tune was around in the late '60s and the Schoolboys on the LP heard it first on a Granada TV show called 'Queen St Gang' this was circa 67 68 (see IMDB) The melody was used by James Royal on CBS recs (UK) a white soul singer called 'jack' I'm not too sure, but I have the record. I used to hear the tune in a Big band orch on shows like Rapido, which is how Library music works
Amazing...I purchased this album new in the 60s, and like sexycooljulesverne stated when he posted this, I wholeheartedly agree that this IS the best song ever by Arzachel. I can't believe that it's not more popular or well-known. As I write this (29May08), there are two vinyl copies on eBay that were just sold for over $150. each!!

@nickthelick I boycott anything from this sleazebag label. Luckily I bought copy on Evolution for £0.20 in 1978. It was in a junk shop for months.

I have remembered: The tune was used for a song called 'House of jack' by James Royal on CBS c.1967. This was issued as a '45.
I think the raison d'tré of french band AIR were inspired by this treatment. He may be annoyed, but I think this is the best thing Dave Stewart done.
