It's one of those fantasies where it doesn't shove it all in your face at once. There's plenty of magic. And if you want giants, well just wait. They exist in this world, along with dragons, winter zombies, immortal forest children, wargs, etc...The whole point of the series is that magic was dead, and after hundreds and even thousands of years they're coming alive again.

@kamwrites Since Martin has stated that the series is based loosely on the War of the Roses, it's not unreasonable to assume the Lannisters=the Lancasters and the Starks=the Yorks. Of course, that's just fan supposition. Not that it matters.

I will remind everybody that in the end, it was neither the Lancasters or the Yorks that wound up ruling the country in the long run. We can assume the same will be said of Westeros when Martin finally finishes the series-if he does.
