I'm a conductor and locomotive engineer on one of the Canadian railways. We nearly hit a woman stopped in traffic, in her vehicle, on a road crossing at 50 MPH. Luckily, we were able to stop short. If you're in this situation, GET OUT and run along the track towards the train, waving your arms crosswise.
Yeah, in the UK at least you definitely have a LOT of time to sort yourself out, and also on tracks with four gates it's the whole reason the front gates come down before the rear ones.
As a kid I used to be quite scared of the yellow and red flashing lights at our local level crossing -no idea why. It was in a daft place very close to a T junction (actually nearly all the level crossings in Worthing were) which meant it was more feasible someone might get stuck because they were queueing.
A lot of governments model their road safety videos on these aussie ones, including all the Think ones we have in the UK (remember the girl who got hit at 40? nasty).
But yeah, why didn't the focus driver reverse through the barrier? Clearly doable.
It is called panic and many people freeze in the sight of danger. It always looks easier from the comfort of out computer desk. Australia made some great videos.
interesting, hope its gets the message through

That's gotta be the most haunting PSA clip I've ever seen. They NEED to run that in the US, far too many idiots stop on the tracks here.

@lt1caprice57l Same in Britain. It's crazy to think that some people actually zig-zag through the barriers

This is really quite scary. It's the sort of thing we should have in the UK.
