@bowler8 I'm thinking she must've won a lot of awards. There's no way she can get it if she doesn't have anything, but if she has one outstanding thing (like national first place in a math competition or something), that beats out on a ton of small extracurriculars.
hahaha..why was diana so worried about not getting into yale? i mean, she made it to harvard and there's no reason for her to worry about being rejected by yale, considering that getting into harvard is harder than yale ;)
Sophie got accepted into Johns Hopkins U, didn't she? (e-mail inbox @3:52, there's an e-mail from JHU with the content "Congratulations...").
While JHU may not be a prestigious Ivy, it still offers excellent academics and research opportunities. Perhaps she took Washington and Lee because they offered a full scholarship?
Honestly the hype around "Ivy League" is overrated. Many schools now a days offer education qualities similar to that of Ivy League schools.
@TemaShika24 I know right? I want to get into Princeton because of their great oppertunities (I plan on taking History and Politics) as well as their wonderful financial support. But because of the general hype it's hard to convince people I'm trying to get in for just the name, there are plenty of great Universities and I plan on applying to quite a few, Princeton's just my first choice :3
While I don't think Mike was exactly the most informed applicant, he was certainly the most honest and genuine kid in this documentary. The kid came from such a rough social and economic background with having to take care of his family and brothers, and he was just such a cool guy. I was actually glad that he stayed in PA near his family, because at the end of the day that's 1000x more important than going to a brand name institution.
difference between the the girls who got accepted and the girl who got rejected: the two girls who preferred a specific school got accepted. the girl who just wanted to get into ivy league for namesake got rejected.
@aliciathefatpenguin But we know someone who has won lots of awards, but was turned down because they hadn't done enough extracurricular...and others who did a few extracurricular and won no awards and still got into an ivy league...its just knowing what they are looking for, and every college is different.
fucking parents put a lot of times into their kids hahahahaha i know one guy who use to go to my school who got into MIT and he was stupid as fuck and his parents didnt give a shit.
Sophie's father was exceptionally mature about the whole thing compared to some of the other, stone-faced parents. It's so sad that Sophie didn't get in, more for his sake than hers.
at first i felt bad for sophie for getting rejected from basically all ivies until i saw previous parts showing her terrible essay responses, and her terrible interivew. she totally came in with the wrong attitude.
lol, my asian mom and i jumped with joy, went crazy running around the house when i got accepted into cal state fullerton. i chose cal state long beach in the end, lol
@MsDerangedJoker No, it doesn't imply anything negative about their race. It's just that their English skills cannot be conventionally understood. I wouldn't know what they're saying if they didn't have the subs. All the Asian-Americans in the video without a thick accent don't have subtitles, so it's nothing special or meant to be offensive.
Why didn't the TV people tell him to take his SAT II's? Especially when they were filming the SAT section of the video where all the girls took theirs... It's Mike's own responsibility, but it's a bit funny
Michael is such a fail at life. Seriously what kind of a dumb ass thinks he even stands a chance at admission into one of the most selective universities in the world with an SAT score of 1400. Not to mention being completely oblivious to the fact that subject tests were required?! You completely deserve that rejection, Mike. Sorry.
Nope, if you watch the rest of the documentary, you'd see that the others are scoring in the 2000 and above range, so evidently this is the new system.
I think it says a lot that Diana is not flustered by the reputation of a particular school. Yeah, she got into Harvard, it's an incredible school but maybe to her, she felt Yale or another school could do more for her. Everyone's different, not everyone is meant to fill a particular mold, and that's an important lesson to draw from this documentary, that there is no secret formula or mold for getting into any college.
@TheBraziliantV I agree, but when a school is that competitive (Harvard takes less then 10 percent of applicants) you should not apply if you don't want to go there, you are just taking the spot away from somebody who is actually interested in that school.
fuck columbia... fuck sats 1990 with 3 season varisty sports for 3 years of highschool for me= getting looked at by penn/duke my parents are asian... im asian.... my dad used to get on me for college shit but whatever.. my goal was to just play sports in college... and just get a job when i get out of college just party andbullshit... have fun
If the outlook that the on display here has merit, then nobody ever came out of a school outside the Ivy League and attained success. The truth is, your undergraduate school is almost irrelevant after a few years in the real world. Getting into an Ivy doesn't necessarily lead to success, developing and using skills does. The Ivies are not the only schools that provide students with the tools to obtain success, as evidenced by many a 1991 Honda civic with a Harvard sticker.
Wow, that Mike kid is retarded. How do you not take the SAT 2's when it's a requirement for admission at almost every school. He doesn't deserve to go. And his stupid ass brother was saying how Columbia has a sucky football team? Wow. What a family.
@Anjabel69 They are Vietnamese, which is why his mother does not care about Ivy Leagues. The Southeastern Asians don't value education as much as the Chinese and Japanese do...
@James12842 This entire documentary is a generalization. But, if you must know my reasoning: Chinese, Japanese, and Koreans usually come to America for educational and work opportunities. That's why they push their kids to work so hard. However, the surge in Vietnamese migration was due to the fact that they were escaping war, not seeking opportunities...it's all about why they moved to the USA.
@Anjabel69 I usually don't reply to rude comments like this, especially when they don't concern me. I don't know Mike or his family but they seem like good people, his little brother was probably trying to be positive and cheer him up for not getting in. Maybe Mike wasn't on top of things like he could've been, he had to look after his family, work, he played football, etc. The college application process is tough as is without those added pressures and responsibilities.
@anhducktran I wasn't commenting on his nationality. I was commenting on him being dumb as a person for not checking the application requirements for the school that he spent time and money applying to. Not only did he not submit the SAT II, he didn't even take it. Also, his little brother could comfort him just the same without making up lame excuses like how bad the football team is, which nobody cares about. It's both tragic and frustrating to see.
I know there is pressure to go IVY but i mean right under her penn e-mail it says "Congrats from John Hopkins University!" or something along those lines, that is a GREAT school she has no reason to feel bad being rejected by yale and so on.
@TheBraziliantV I know, way to be a bitch. I got into Penn but waitlisted at JHU. If it was the other way around I would've chosen JHU in a heartbeat...if I was rejected from every other college (and that wasn't even the case for her) I would've been so glad to get into Johns Hopkins.
Sophie said it herself- she's not special enough.A decently high SAT score (2100) and many EC's may seem great, but with more and more people applying to the Ivy league schools, she's not much of a standout. She had many EC's but probably lacked passion or depth in any of them. Doing music or clubs for the sake of impressing colleges is pretty wrong to tell you the truth, and I bet colleges saw that in her application, especially her essay (a poorly written block of insincere garble about NHS).
@Kendy228 Yeah, You can even look at the article about it. Just google her name, and the articles will pop up. It's wasn't too long ago though. The article is from Washington and Lee, the college she said she will be attending at the end of this documentary, so it's def her.
I do feel bad for Mike. He comes from an immigrant family, basically has no father, and just doesn't have the guidance at home to tell him what needs to be done to get into an ivy school. The other kids have immigrant parents but they are more informed than Mike's family.
I honestly thought all of them were going to be rejected for low test scores, not taking rigorous enough classes, having boring ECs, and hardly any leadership in ECs. Hm.
Dianna's test scores were very high, and Michelle's and Sophie's were fairly decent; however, I do agree about the EC thing... this documentary was made half a decade ago, and kids are getting increasingly competitive, so it's becoming harder and harder to get into schools like these. To be honest, while Michele and Dianna's stats were excellent and good enough to get into an Ivy 5 years ago, I'm not sure they'd be able to get in if they were to apply to the class of 2015.
Oh wow, I just stumbled on this.. Diana ended up getting, and going to Harvard. She studies Molecular and Cellular Biology. Knowing her personally, she's an awesome person, and deserves it. :)
Diana was definitely one of the most likable people in the series. I'm happy for her. Also notice how her parents were among the more laid back ones...compared to the others of course.
Notice how the one who said, "I don't want to argue with my parents" and seen not arguing/talking back at the parents got in? There's this superstition in Asian community that if you respect your parents and do as they wish/tell you to do (because they would ALWAYS want the best for you), you get 10x as better rewards - in this case, it's the colleges they want.
well i guess asian parents expect (and want) their children to go to well known colleges such as Ivy Leagues because they believe a degree from one of them is possibly the easiest way to "survive" as a son/daughter of immigrants (or asian americans)...

geawee 1 year ago
@geawee Unless there's another Sophie Xiong in Washington and Lee's class of 2010, it's her.

@mutatedlavalamp Hahahaha, I just checked and you're right! That's sad yet pretty funny and ironic.

I honestly thought all of them were going to be rejected for low test scores, not taking rigorous enough classes, having boring ECs, and hardly any leadership in ECs. Hm.
catstaffo 1 year ago
Dianna's test scores were very high, and Michelle's and Sophie's were fairly decent; however, I do agree about the EC thing... this documentary was made half a decade ago, and kids are getting increasingly competitive, so it's becoming harder and harder to get into schools like these. To be honest, while Michele and Dianna's stats were excellent and good enough to get into an Ivy 5 years ago, I'm not sure they'd be able to get in if they were to apply to the class of 2015.

How did Mike not know to take 2 SAT subject tests..silly boy.
dyktspecc 1 year ago 2
Oh wow, I just stumbled on this.. Diana ended up getting, and going to Harvard. She studies Molecular and Cellular Biology. Knowing her personally, she's an awesome person, and deserves it. :)

Diana was definitely one of the most likable people in the series. I'm happy for her. Also notice how her parents were among the more laid back ones...compared to the others of course.

Notice how the one who said, "I don't want to argue with my parents" and seen not arguing/talking back at the parents got in? There's this superstition in Asian community that if you respect your parents and do as they wish/tell you to do (because they would ALWAYS want the best for you), you get 10x as better rewards - in this case, it's the colleges they want.
s1lverl1n1ng 1 year ago
well i guess asian parents expect (and want) their children to go to well known colleges such as Ivy Leagues because they believe a degree from one of them is possibly the easiest way to "survive" as a son/daughter of immigrants (or asian americans)...

Bahahaha Michelle's brother is funny. Mike's cool. Diana seems nice. Sophie is dumb.
