  • why is mallard never running only shunted or pulled

  • if the money was raised would it be physically possible to get her in working order again ???

  • 1:03 It's Mavis.

  • has Mallard just been "stuffed and mounted" like lot of old steam trains, or, if the NRM York just paid some money, could they restore her, and operate her?

  • the tornado is the one in the top gear race! was scotsman going to take it?

  • @trainguyrocks Top Gear wanted to use Flying Scotsman, but because she was still being restored, they had to use Tornado

  • @MrTrainboy1 So bad on that!

  • Will 4472 also return in steam in 2012?

  • @scotsman125 i believe it will return last weekend of may 2011, in wartime black with the number 103.

however the NRM page has a artists impression with 503 on it....hopefully 103.

then it will have the apple green livery as it was in late LNER years, it may even retain the same number, but will not have the smoke deflectors as they were BR.

atleast thats what i can establish from reading about it from places.

would be nice if the NRM would clarify.

  • Will the Mallard be back on the mainline along with the Flying Scotsman, at the same time? After all these 2 are the greatest locomotives ever to exist.

  • Notice how her piston rods aren't connected to the siderods? Why is that?

  • Shes not in steam but shes moving in the next best way, By a real engine.

  • i never thought i would see Tornado and Mallard pulling a train together!

  • its a shame the mallard cant run under its own power

  • NRM I hope that the job on Flying Scotsman is going well

  • they should bring mallard back to york with the flying scotsman when its rebuit

  • I am glad that Mallard is not in steam (I'll just duck for cover from the insults!) - as Bittern, SNG and UofSA are run more and more parts will need to be replaced and the original fabric of the locomotives will be lost. It makes sense therefore to retain Mallard in static condition, and thereby in as original condition as possible.

P.S. How hard was it to take the middle cylinder connecting rod off???

  • @edwardianeccentric The Mallard has pretty much had a large percentage of parts replaced.

  • @TubeHumour That may be so, but still if they do not steam it again no more of it will be lost.

  • Its a shame she couldn't move under her own power but what a sight two of the greatest steam engines in the world making their way to swindon!

  • @TRAINHEAD247 shildon not swindon

  • @NatRailwayMuseum

Is it likely Mallard will ever return to steam?

  • that better be there 11th sept when i got :(

  • If only Mallard had been able to move under it's own steam, what a sight that would be!

  • why was there an air pipe run around the side of mallard?

why didn't they use the vac brakes or is mallards vac brakes not work anymore?

  • There's just something about that Gresley A4 chime whistle

  • We were in the Cab of Mallard 2 weeks ago. She is magnificent but not back in steam but I think that there should be a campaign to bring her back to full working glory.. just as they are doing with the Flying Scotsman (Currently just a rolling chassis) as she is being totally rebuilt from scratch at the NRM York.

Mallard is now only at Shildon till SEPTEMBER.. not until 2013 as previously stated by NRM. This makes better sense to bring her back to York this year.

  • @chrismumford It hasn't been decided when Mallard will return to the NRM in York but it's not expected to be within the next year.

  • @NatRailwayMuseum why has Mallard left the NRM?

the only two reasons i want to go to NRM are, The Flying Scotsman, and Mallard

  • @benjokazooie Mallard has left ahead of some redevelopment work at the Museum. The engine will return!

  • @NatRailwayMuseum oh good, what about the scotsman? surley she is remaining there becaue of the overhaul.

    what work is being done?

i lied about only 2 reasons, i completley forgot that tornado was there.

  • @benjokazooie scotsmans frame have moved now.

  • @benjokazooie

NOO, just wait til you see the streamlined duchess... my god she is gorgeous!

  • @NatRailwayMuseum Mallard should stay in york. and where is the prototype HST numberd 41001 (252001 original set number) is it shildon or has she gone forever. Please get the prototype HST back in york please. it's one of the best exihibits and it is a good history piece about British rail (BR)

  • @chrismumford Sadly, it's not just a campaign which needed but huge sums of money too. Can you anticipate that being available at the moment?

  • i saw them bout out side the NRM whilst working 1E23 the other day, wondered what the Blue steak was doing out the hall

  • Was that Mallard whistling at 00:35?

  • @Femmenition Shame it wasn't Mallard whistling it was Tornado which has two whisltles. I believe the A4 whistle Tornado has, was donated to the A1 trust and is originally off Mallards sister A4 60029 Woodcock. But correct me if I'm wrong anyone!

  • Mallards back in steam again? Wow and i missed it Bugger!

  • @TheStonehill Not quite in steam - was being hauled "dead". Still a fine sight once more on the ECML though.

  • She's back??

  • What a good day. Went to see them been prepared this morning, and saw them depart York and arrive at Darlington. People say Mallard shouldnt be going, but Shildon should be allowed to have of its crown jewels for a while.

  • Nice! Great to see 4468 back on the main line!

  • I do hope Mallard returns to the Great Hall at York soon. It won't feel the same without an A4 permantley displayed there. I'd like to get to Shildon to see her at some point but i've only been there twice since it's too far and also expensive for me to get the train there.

  • Top quality film, saw Mallard pass through Thirsk, but it was a not a good place for viewing.

  • Thrilling to watch and looks stunning. Well done to all who made it happen!

    Cheers!

  • I only hope that one day, just one day, she can be returned to steam. Such a shame that one of Britains most histroic steam engines is currently not operational....

  • Brill. I have just arrived back from seeing her go through thirsk. we caught her about 1 min after getting out of the car brill. Bit embarresed coz still in my school uniform as she came through. I hate the uniform coz it's blumin blue like flipping chelsea!! LOL!

  • WOW!

  • Mallard see`s daylight!!

  • WOW!!! just WOW!!!

  • MALLARD ALL THE WAY, MALLARD,MALLARD ALL TE WAY (with the help of Tornado :P)

  • Why is she missing a rod connecting the middle driving axle to the cylinders?

  • @kingmush3602 When a loco is towed dead no oil gets into the cylinders so you knacker the piston rings and cylinder liners. They took the rods off so the pistons don't move.

  • great footage, were going up to Shildon in September to see her, she's back in 2012 though provided that the refurb is finished on time. She's definitely not left for good just having a holiday

  • nice footage.

take good care of her Shildon

  • @CARLOS62B shildon nrm is right bext to the asbo chav council estate so i feel sorry for mallard

  • To great locomotive together

  • nice

  • bye bye mallard

  • she better be back in 2012 because york nrm is where she belongs

  • 3 locos 1 Coach!

  • @Forevagrey lol

  • beautiful! glad to see mallard out in the open again! :)

  • what a sight

  • She sholdnt be going to the greenhouse, she should be staying in York =/

  • @EastMidlandsSteam you know its only tempory mate, only while they re-vamp the great hall when it'll come back

  • @GWRDec Okay, that's good, she belongs to the NRM :D

  • @GWRDec O yh i know that, still id rather have moved her elsewhere in the museum.

  • It's Not Going To Stay At Shildon Permanantely Is It?

  • @JoeyDPro2009 Apparently, she is staying where she's moving to permanently. whether or not this is true, I do not know, but I hope it isn't.

  • @JoeyDPro2009 No she'll be back next year or 2012 at the latest.

  • wish i could of made this, any way many thanks for posting. Hope all goes well during the move.

  • So Mallard's been moved to Shildon to make more space, correct?

  • @NewController01 As far as I'm aware, the Great Hall at the NRM is to undergo a major refurbishment programme (due to begin around late 2010 or early 2011), so they're probably clearing out some of the major exhibits (including Mallard herself) to prepare for the work ahead. Whether or not Mallard will return afterwards, has yet to be seen...

    Hope this helps.
