I got my cat from a animal shelter as a kitten the money people spend there is way less but it goes to food and toys for the animals there. The sheter lets the animals run free in the room every day so they can get exercize and it evan has a out side bit so they can get fresh air. It makes me happy that i got a SHELTER near me better than a breeding house.

This is a lie. I do believe that there are puppy mills, but not all bought animals are from them. ALL of the cats and dogs at my petsmart are from local families who donated them. PETA has a good intention, but I HATE how they try to make you feel so horribly guilty just to get donations.

Example, law states that dogs must have access to proper shelter (so not caged outside), constant access to fresh water, fed properly, have a certain amount of space (no tiny cages), etc. The trouble is ENFORCING these stipulations. Many of these places are "hidden", either no one notices, or no one cares to report it. Even if they are discovered, the laws weak...
Don't punish the animals, still buy them, but actually try to get these mills shut down. Even if they get the money, you can bring attention to it by alerting the authorities.

what's not mentioned is that because of the poor breeding conditions, these "purebred" puppies are sometimes born with chronic health problems. i def. advocate adopting from shelters. i found both of my dogs roaming the streets as puppies! if you MUST have a purebred, demand to see the parents and where the dogs are raised!!! that's what you pay all that money for! not for a sick abused dog :(

you're right, they will be euthanized ...but the pet shop lost money. Regardless an animal will die, one in the pet shop or one in the pound. if we can get enough people to boycott buying from pet shops they will not make money and they will close. yes it will be a loss as the animals may lose their lives, but it is for a greater cause. when the demand goes away, the need for puppy mills will as well.

@violetflame1980 the point is not that your dog "turned out pretty good," the fact is, getting your dog from a shop perpetuates these mills from treating dogs with such cruelty. Your dog's mother is probably on the brink of death with infections that slowly eat at her. She is living under conditions that even prisoners of horrific crimes don't have to endure.

This is why i bought my beagle puppy from a bredder, ( the guy had 1 dog, had babies, and gave them to adoption and i bought one for 150$, ( the 150 was for previous puppy shots.,, i would like to know how this is legal, i thought we had a department of governmetn that prevented this stuff, i mean i would just call them up and tell them where its at, then they would be shut down and they will go to jail for atleast 5-10 years, depending on how many abused dogs, ABUSING ANIMALS IS ILLEGAL BY LAW

Nevermind that the pet industry is a hundred billion dollar a year industry providing hundreds of thousands of jobs around the world. Much better for a human being to starve to death and not be able to take care of his family than for a dog to spend his life being fed and taken care of, right? @renfist Before I got to the end of your message I was very upset, but yes, I will agree, I know some breeders, and they love all their dogs and are selective of who they let even take then dogs home. Ones like this mill, like was said, violate some laws, and because of that, what PETA should do, is bring them to court, not just ask for my money. I will do my part by getting a dog from a rescue or shelter and love that dog and care for it, not by giving PETA money.

Why isn't the SPCA or someone coming there and shutting them down? I'm not all that familiar with cruelty laws but not getting proper treatment for the dogs with broken limbs, wounds, diseases and conditions is cruelty, isn't it? Espeacially if the owners and supposed caretakers know the animals are injured or sick and are still not doing anything about it, they should be facing criminal charges, shoudn't they???

It's places like puppy mills that are responsible for continuing to breed health problems (like a propensity for cancer, vWBD, hip displaysia, etc.) into certain dog breeds, creating serious, perpetuating problems down the road. Anyone who can treat an animal like that is sick.

what's not mentioned is that because of the poor breeding conditions, these "purebred" puppies are sometimes born with chronic health problems. i def. advocate adopting from shelters. i found both of my dogs roaming the streets as puppies! if you MUST have a purebred, demand to see the parents and where the dogs are raised!!! that's what you pay all that money for! not for a sick abused dog :(

I really liked how you touched the surfaceo of yet another problem with buying dogs in petshops, poor health. So many people are not only ignorant of puppy mills but also of the affects of them on their future pets, etc.
I'd love to write a 'how to' book on buying puppies or kittens. The first rule would be: DON'T BUY A PUPPY OR KITTEN. Problem solved. =p

you're right, they will be euthanized ...but the pet shop lost money. Regardless an animal will die, one in the pet shop or one in the pound. if we can get enough people to boycott buying from pet shops they will not make money and they will close. yes it will be a loss as the animals may lose their lives, but it is for a greater cause. when the demand goes away, the need for puppy mills will as well.
