  • shangpush, I can give excripts from a paper I wrote on the Hydrus if you like. I am probably the only one who has the complete story on the Hydrus and it still keeps getting bigger. Give me a PM and I will send it to you. Jared

  • *Busted and scattered showing she hit bottom hard. My friend is looking for the Hydrus in northern Lake Huron.

  • @dillonsacra What a coincidence! I just now Googled the Hydrus to see if its whereabouts had yet been discovered. I see you posted just 44 minutes ago. My grandfather, Calvin Hatch, was the engineer on the Hydrus. He died about 10 days before my mother was born. A painting he made of the Hydrus has been above the desk I am writing from since she died in 1999. With the storm's 100th anniversary approaching, I hope you can respond to me if you have information. Thanks.

  • One of the most haunting images stuck in my mind was the Argus. I dove her a few years ago and she lies upside down in 230" of water. Her rudder is bent at a 90 degree angle with no blades and a large crumple amidships, showing that she got caught between two large waves and snapped her. Her stern is bus.t

  • I grew up on the lower St. Clair River. Somtimes, while standing on the shore or my parents dock, especially around this time of year, It almost brings a tear to my eye when I think of ships like the D.J Morrel and the Charles S. Price that were upbound in the river like many ships I have watched in my lifetime, unknowing that a few short miles farther north, the storms were brewing and ready to unleash all their horrors.

  • I live 5 minutes from lake Huron. Does anyone know, which ships lost during the 1913 storm on Lake Huron have not been found? I know they found the WEXFORD between my town and Goderich, but that's the only one I'm aware of.

  • @RFKFANTS67I believe the only ones still lost in Huron are Carruthers and the Hydrus. I think thier is one more in Superior as well.

  • My great uncle was on the Issac M Scott - Chief Engineer

  • @bobnixden Hello-- My grandfather, Calvin Hatch, was Chief Engineer aboard the Hydrus. Neither his remains nor the remains of the boat have found. I have a stack of letters written aboard ship and sent home to my grandmother in Port Huron. My mother was born about 10 days after Calvin drowned. Since she died in 1999, I have a painting he made of the Hydrus above my writing desk. I hope you can share any information you might have as the 100th anniversary nears. Thanks.

  • @shangpush Well thats very interesting. I have gathered as much infromation regarding the Hydrus as I could. I do remember seeing your grandfathers name on my crew list. I have searched long and hard for the Hydrus for the last 3 years. I have multiple paintings of her. The Hydrus I suspect, disappeared south of Thunder Bay. A ship claimed to have seen the Hydrus in the area and watch her lights disappear after being hit by a rogue wave. I would love to hear the contents of those letters!

  • all boats look the same

  • @MrJOHNY347 It's because majority of them are Frieghters which most have a similar design, these aren't battle ships.

  • Very interesting, being from Australia first time I stumbled across this 1913 storm event. Sad and well put together. Having said that I need to get something off my chest. Doesn't anyone READ anymore? Why don't people understand or read the subject material before posting "you forgot" or "where's the Edmund Fitzgerald" (It's off my chest now) Thanks for the posting.....

  • you forgot the SS Wexford and the SS Plymouth. Both were lost with their entire crews during the storm.

  • The Leafield didn't even stand a chance seeing the much larger freighters that sank.

  • the Regina rest in 75 ft of water 6.5 miles north east of Lexinton Mi. not in Canadian waters ( that would be the Wexford).

  • there all the same ship

  • i love this video but wheres the edmund fitzgearld

  • @slipknotv2 The Edmund Fitzgerald sank in 1975. All the ships in this video went down in the 1913 storm.

  • Nice video but did I miss it or is the Steamer Wexford that went down on Lake Huron with over 20 hands not included here?

  • All but 2 had the same layout; engine in the back, cab forward above the bow.

It's so typical for great lake ships. What the reason for this construction?

  • Very Nice Tribute, thank you!

  • Wow, Unreal & Brutal Tragedy!! And 62 years later "to the Day" on Nov. 10 / 1975 the Edmund Fitzgerald is lost. These Men died Hero's, because they went into danger to feed their families! No One should die at work, its just not right! And Company Leaders who Kill their Workers for Profit should be Jailed For Life,(ie: "The BP Oil Rig Explosion - 2010")! No one likes to admit it, But its time Strong Unions came back, for Safety, for Full-time Work, and a "Real" Middle Class Life with less debt!

  • Hey there - we're featuring your video today on Absolute Michigan (dotcom)!

  • great video loved it

  • The Scott is listed as being in Lake Superior when it is in Lake Huron. Both lakes have a Thunder Bay.

  • Go to, h(double t)p(colon back slash x2)seagrant(dot)wisc(dot)edu(backslash)CoastalHazards(backslash)Default(dot)aspx(question mark)tabid(equal sign)409

Browse around at this site & you will see a 20ft.+ wall/wave of vertical white water neairng the lighthouse at the Duluth ship channel.

  • I found well-worn chunks of coal while collecting rock specimens on the W shore of Lake Huron (10 miles N of Lexington MI) in the summer of 1990. I had guessed they came from a shipwreck, either the Regina or the Hydrus which both sank in 1913.

My grandmother arrived in America on Nov. 1, 1913 and travelled from NYC to Thunder Bay ON(Fort William then). We often wondered why it took 17 days to make that trip- about the same time it took to cross the Atlantic.

  • only 4 wrecks have still yet to be found the Carruthers and Hydrus are somewhere in Lake Huron, and The Henry B Smith and the Leafield are still on the bottom somewhere in Lake Superior

  • Is this the storm that devastated the Ohio and Miami river valleys in 1913 ? I grew up in a town on the Great Miami River and Dayton and Middletown were both destroyed during this time.

  • the wrecks of 4 ships that sank in the storm are still unfound to this day. 2 of them in lake superior, and the other 2 in lake huron

  • My Grand Farther was in that storm. He made it, but as shown so meny did not.

  • Amazing how so many huge boats could be destroyed in a lake. I'd pay good money to see a picture, or better, a video, of what it looks like out in the open waters of the big lakes during severe storms that can sink these huge freighters.

  • The storms can often be as powerful as a Catagory 3 Hurricane, it's because of their power they are known as "The Witch of November"

  • Very imformative and great photos.

I have a map of all the shipwrecks on Lake Superior.
