  • Thanks footcheck for the post--it moves me. The soaring through the octaves at 2:58 is wow. Every singer(and listener) of this timeless spiritual is smiling

  • Why did ENSLAVED Negroes sing this song? there wasn't any planes in the sky back then, and the home they were singing about was The Promised Land. NOT Amerikkka This is a song that came out of persecution, Oppression, a cry to the MOST HIGH to Free us from the Hands of our Enemies. When the Chariots show up to get us our enemies will be DESTROYED! ,and we will be Delivered from New Egypt / Babylon-Amerikkka

  • As much as I hate to be critical, because she has a great voice. She doesn't pronounce things right, she doesn't even say home. she says ooooo oooo?!

  • Theres a battle over Battle. I wish they would have went into double time.

  • I enjoy a faster-paced version.

  • Nice my grand ma adores her

  • There's a lot of um fighting? Going on here. Just take in the song.

  • Does anyone have a good copy of the source of this video? Now that YouTube supports higher resolution / better audio, we really need a top-quality version of this great performance posted. Please check your video collection and upload if you can!

  • What's the name of the conductor?

  • Absolutely angelic!

  • Amen about people shouldn't compare Beyonce to Kathleen Battle in the same sentence.

They are both great vocalists in their own style. God gave them each a unique talent!

    I just envy them both!!!

  • YOU FUCKEN BLOW BITCH!

  • I saw her perform this song live in San Francisco, acapella style, and I was moved to tears. The purity of her voice was like an angel calling to my soul. Thank you Ms. Battle for being a vessel that beauty can reach out to us though.

  • beautiful voice....love the choir!!

  • Joe Volpe likes this

  • People shouldnt even in their great minds be comparing Beyonce to Kathleen Battle in the same sentence.

  • @RudeGirlSwagger98 i agree with you but i can't watch her sing without cracking up. she is just too animated.

  • @8Cutiepiehoneylamb8 Well sometimes thats how people express themselves when singing to get that harmony whent their feeling the melody.

  • @RudeGirlSwagger98 Kathleen, like all opera singers, has a lot of training that should be recognized and respected. But Beyonce is a contemporary great, extremely talented in a lot of ways.

  • @RudeGirlSwagger98 hahah agreed lol

  • Does anyone know who's arrangement this is? and also where and when and for what occasion this was preformed?

  • Her voice floats like a butterfly.

  • Mrs. Merz, my 5th grade school teach also taught me this song right after the Louis Armstrong. I don't make this stuff up as I go. It's gotta tie into my life's experiences. It's called being genuine.

    .

  • My soul felt peaceful after listening to this.

  • who is trying to compare kathleen and beyonce? their music styles are sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo different and they are both very talented.

  • Very, very beautiful voice. Very good singer. It is the great pity that this talented person was and is forced to endure senseless fights instead of have all of her strength directed toward bringing people the great joy by her voice and her wonderful singing.

  • beautiful, beautifil.....this is very cool

  • My absolute favorite opera singer in the world. She is the total package, beauty, gifted, passionate, unique and divine to listen to!!!!

  • Perhaps the greatest soprano ever. The high c at 2:55 is brilliant. Wonderful supporting choir as well.

  • beautiful, absolutely gorgeous

  • Captivating performance. 2:55 Wow...

  • I check into this post at least weekly - Kathleen Battle is inspirational - she makes me feel better in these turbulent times. I am sure the angels in heaven sound as wonderful. God Bless you and thank you dear Kathleen.

  • A beautiful, haunting performance - thanks for posting. (Judging by the flat-top haircuts on some of the older boys, guessing this performance is from around 1986??)

  • Thank you Lord for giving us this very special lady who warms my hart with feeling that carry me to that special place - its just over there, its close...I can almost feel it when I close my eyes - I think its there...somewhere over the rainbow.

  • she could win any battle with her voice :P

  • Powerful!

  • divine!

  • Beautiful, sounds like one of Gods Angels are singing, just a lovely soft spirit filled melody to my ears, this is one of my dads favorite songs, he sung this song to me on his death bed, dying from lung cancer, he died 1 week later, (sad tears)........ I miss him, I will be so happy when God make earth peaceful, perfect, equall, I can finally see my parents again, he promise a resurrection of both rightouess an unrightouess, right now hes asleep in the grave waiting for God to wake him....

  • Weird hearing these gospel versions of this Rugby anthem

  • This video gives me CHILLS every time I watch it.

  • lovely

  • :'(

  • The chords change at .46 UGHHHH gorgeous.

  • Blessed she is. Amen. Thanks GOD!!!

  • Exquisite ~ ! ~ . . .

  • Why Beyonce fans think they have a right to post her name on every genuine artist's video? Beyonce is an international stripper, Kathleen is an international Classical singer. I have NEVER seen Kathleen acting like some hootchie mama. If Beyonce wanted to be seen as a RESPECTED artist she should've put a ring on professionalism!

  • @Kumtekmeon that and the skinny twitch's version plain sucks!

  • @Kumtekmeon Damn right skippy, i weep for the future of our society with the people young kids look up to today!!

  • @Kumtekmeon Did you have to disrespect one of the most influential and talented artists of the 21st century in order to boost another. Kathleen does not need you to god Beyonce to boost her name. It just makes Kathleen fans look delusional. Both are very talented and gifted women. Both have worked incredibly hard at their craft and so neither deserve to be disrespected the way you've disrespected Beyonce in your post.

  • @JonathanGardnerTV My child, Kathleen's fans are of a DIFFERENT kind; we know and respect REFINED artistry. Kathleen studied, practiced AND worked extremely hard to cement her craft, unlike Beyonce who owes her popularity to her father's treacherous and heartless acts against others. Whatever influence Beyonce has is as faddish as her last hit, so IF you are serious about YOUR artistry, you best emulate a substantial other, UNLESS you have a 'Mathew Knowles' to 'kill' for you.

  • @Kumtekmeon Why do you think I'm even on a Kathleen video? Because I appreciate her gift. Now, if you wanna talk about "professionalism" how about I bring up the MET...hmmm...that's what I thought. No one's perfect. Also, I know what Matthew Knowles is like and such, but I counter act his efforts by supporting Michelle Williams, Kelly Rowland and LeToya Luckett - all very talented, former members of Destiny's Child with great solo projects out.

  • @JonathanGardnerTV What the MET has to do with this? Kelly and Michelle were not ''former members'' it was Letoya and Latavia who suffered the brutal demise. It's great you love your Beyonce, BUT I cannot respect a backstabber and a selfish person. Her fame is built on others 'pain'.

  • @Kumtekmeon You mentioned "professionalism"...talking about causing others "pain". Kathleen's "diva" attitude has been publicised about and many know of the "pain" she has caused...let's just leave it there. Like I said, no one is perfect. They are both incredible talents whose work on-stage makes up for whatever dirt hides backstage.

Another thing - which I have already covered - is that Michelle and Kelly as well as Beyonce are FORMER members because the group disbanded in '05...

  • @JonathanGardnerTV Kathleen's ''Diva attitude'' had nothing to do with her professionalism. Ive never heard of Kathleen jeopardizing anyone's career, furthermore it's one side against another as Kathleen denied the allegations! With Bey it's totally different; in fact backstabbing and treachery go beyond unprofessionalism. As you can see I put ''Former Members" in quotation to separate them from the real VICTIMS - Letoya and Latavia. Let us enjoy Kathleen's video, enough of that Beyonce.

  • @Kumtekmeon Funny how you want to turn this back to Kathleen when in my early replies I tried to END this, but you have been incredibly stubborn.

It was YOUR original comment that brought up Beyonce in the first place - which was totally unnecessary. We all know how LeToya and LaTavia were undid. But that was Matthew, the group's manager - and yes I know Bey's father. Bey didn't kick them out. Matthew did.

If you want to have a go at Beyonce, mention Miss Ross too.

  • @JonathanGardnerTV, cutie, IF you want to end this all you have to do is to ACCEPT my comments as correct. I did not bring up Beyonce, as you can CLEARLY see, my comment was in relation to someone who had brought up Bey's name on here. I see you've become her PR. Well the fact is Latavia and Letoya were betrayed by Beyonce. She could've defended their place in the group, but she contrived with her father. She and Latavia were best friends, and she knew her of father's actions, so NO excuse.

  • @JonathanGardnerTV Let us enjoy the BEAUTY of Kathleen Battle. She's a masterpiece.

  • @Kumtekmeon That's all I ever intended to do...of course, I can enjoy one's talents without disrespecting another's....like I said. If you want to talk about betrayal, why are you yet to mention Diana Ross?

  • @JonathanGardnerTV You seem to know those who have issues of betrayal, so WHY are you fighting me?

  • @Kumtekmeon I think I love you.

  • @yoyo23man23 Well I know, I love you. Happy Holidays - Stay blessed.

  • Comment removed

  • @Kumtekmeon Sure, Beyonce may not be classically trained...but that's not a reason for you all to be so snobby and judgemental. Both Ms. Battle and Beyonce are talented...just in different ways. I can't stand the snottiness and the closed-mindedness here...I'm a music major in college right now, and I can appreciate the beauty and significance of both supposed "serious" music as WELL as popular music. If any of you knew anything about music, you'd know that both types are important.

  • @SickMouth I did not speak to Beyonce's massacre of this classic [Negro] Spiritual, I spoke to her annoying fans' tendency to polish her name on UNRELATED artist's page in a desperate attempt to give her some [undeserved] credibility. I too appreciate all kinds of genre, BUT I don't go about squeezing lemon in my milk; it leaves a rather nauseating feeling.

  • @Kumtekmeon You spoke to how much of a snob you are, for sure, calling Beyonce a "stripper" and "unprofessional" just because she hasn't been classically trained. This blatantly exposes your prudery and snobbery. It's closed-minded, negative, and downright elitist. You hardly spoke about her fans...just her as a PERSON, and as an artist.

  • @SickMouth Are you suggesting that ALL artists in the genres R&B/Pop-Rock are strippers and unprofessional? You seem not to have absorbed the point I made: this has nothing to do with with Classical vs Pop. There are some Pop artists who satisfy the standards of what qualify genuine artistry; I've always conceived Beyonce to be a confused child. Nonetheless, IF I should have come across her mentioning on a more likened artist's video, I doubt I would've raised some concern.

  • @Kumtekmeon Also, I never suggested that all artists who make R&B/Pop-Rock music are unprofessional strippers -- YOU made that claim about an artist which I argued against. Where in my comment did I make such an ignorant generalization? Quote me directly.

"Miss Battle reserves her side of the story and that she has a right to."

She certainly does, but do you give that same courtesy to Beyonce? Oh, no. Instead you call her a stripper. Do her short skirts offend you? Prude...

  • @SickMouth I do not merit conspiring with one's father (manager) to destroy the careers of others, including someone who thought to be one's best friend, to be an example of professional conduct. Here's your quote, "calling Beyonce a "stripper" and "unprofessional" just because she hasn't been classically trained." You are therefore implying that ALL non classical singers are opened to be classified as unprofessional strippers. Please note that I've restricted my concerns to Beyonce.

  • @Kumtekmeon Well then, when did that occur? And your attempt to manipulate my statement into something negative is pathetic. No one but you would have read that into my statement. The way you criticized her made it seem as if YOU feel that way about non-classically trained singers who may or may not dress like "hoochie mamas." You fancy yourself some kind of educated music buff, but it's simply just an act full of bias and snobbery. The end. Now I bid your dumb ass fucking adieu...

  • @SickMouth It is advisable that you learn about the background of those you support. I did not make an attempt to manipulate, I simply point to the obvious. Beyonce is Beyonce! You seem to have put her on a pedestal that makes her a representative of all Pop singers - That's your ERROR. Your attitude serves as a warning to all those who love and support the behavior of an artist whose conduct is of great [moral] concern. Did someone say ''hoochie mama?''

  • @Kumtekmeon A pedestal? I liker her, but she's not my favorite artist. I was only pointing out your bias and snot-nosed snobbery. You fail, get over it.

  • @SickMouth I pity you, I really do. If I were in your shoes, I too would not be counting Beyonce as my favorite. Adieu.

  • @Kumtekmeon Wow, can you not read? I said she's not my favorite...I just wasted my time with a snob who can't read. Thought that those didn't exist! Amazing...

  • @SickMouth No, YOU are the one who has a comprehension problem. Please reread my comment and show me where in it I said Beyonce is your favorite singer? The expression, "I too would not be,'' speaks for itself. Once again, adieu.

  • @Kumtekmeon Has Beyoncé’s behavior been morally depraved of late? I do not follow celebrity gossip, but whatever is going on, it has certainly monopolized this comment section, which I thought would have been reserved for praising the beautiful music. It seems I have given the viewers some undeserving ethics, since we are on the topic of morals.

  • @MageSutek I do not follow your last sentence, however, I must declare that I do not appreciate nor do I welcome quarrels on videos of such grandeur, but followers of Beyonce seem unable to control their outbursts, as such I am FORCED to address them. To divulge my reasons for speaking to Beyonce's [lack of] moral would only defeat what both you and I desire - Complete attention to the beautiful Kathleen Battle's mastery. Adieu.

  • @Kumtekmeon Yeah, I have never been fond of them either, although I admit to being a part of quite a few when things really irk me. I guess I am unclear why Beyoncé even came up as a topic on a Battle video; if her supporters felt impelled to act out, what was it that "forced" you to dignify their outbursts with responses? I often ask myself the same question when I engage in banter that typically leads to a stalemate and hurt feelings. Maybe you and I have that kind of base thesis in common.

  • Either way, I have to remind myself that everyone is entitled to opinions, and that YouTube is not a warmly suitable forum for people who take issue with the free expression of opinions from others. I find myself embroiled in pointless back and forth with others all the time, and while I usually make my point, it tends to piss people off. So I am trying to work on picking my battles, no pun intended. But I am glad we have the same aim: enjoying the music. I noticed you close all your...

  • ...comments with "adieu." Is French your native tongue? If so, perhaps exchanging some remarks in French would be more productive. Then you can let me know what heinous and dolorous moral decay that Beyoncé is living in without fear of reprisal from her petulant fans that are having untoward outbursts against the uplifting remarks you have made about the inimitable Kathleen Battle. Let me know. Adieu à vous!

  • @MageSutek I speak for ALL to understand, and I am concerned as to why you are so eager to review my knowledge of Beyonce's unethical behavior? My passion for harmony will only urge you to celebrate this awesome display of artistry. Adieu l'amour...

  • @Kumtekmeon All the French exeunt(s) are somewhat creepy. I am not your love. Do not be concerned about my query about your alleged knowledge of Beyoncé’s "unethical" behavior. Your passion for harmony has suddenly compelled me not to give a shit. Si vous ne comprenez pas l'anglais, laissez-moi vous dire en Français que je n'ai plus les soins. Passez une bonne journée.

  • @MageSutek You are QUITE right - Love speaks to unity and being that we are NOT on one accord, clearly testifies to that. Do remember that YOU were the one to have approached me; in that case, I care less about your lack of interest - Mon anglais est bon, merci.

Well at least I get you to open up - Anything more to add or is this the end?

  • @Kumtekmeon In addition, Ms. Battle caused some terrible and unecessary headaches for the MET with her unprofessional behavior and "diva" attitude. She's a wonderful performer, but Beyonce has never disrespected her colleagues. They work in different parts of the music industry, but professionalism exist in both. I'm a music industry studies major...I should know. Record labels won't promote an artist as much as they've promoted Beyonce if they don't reach a certain level of professionalism.

  • @SickMouth I will accept your apology for your miscalculation of my position, and I must add also that I find it very disheartening that you DARE to speak so acidly about Miss Battle, seeing very well this is her video NOT Beyonce's. Miss Battle reserves her side of the story and that she has a right to. I would suggest you update your textbooks. Professionalism in Pop is subjective especially now that labels aren't making as much as before; if Beyonce can sell cds, who cares about 'decorum'?

  • @Kumtekmeon I don't believe I offered an apology, and I understand your position just fine. You are simply a biased, judgemental snob. I know this isn't a video of Beyonce. I am simply pointing out your prejudice. Name one instance where Beyonce has behaved unprofessionally. You cannot say that Kathleen Battle has been perfectly professional thoughout her entire career, because there is evidence to the contrary, which I've provided. You do the same for Beyonce, and it can be called even.

  • @SickMouth An apology can only be given by those who have become aware of their error. Calling me names does not refute my position. You have offered no such evidence whatsoever! All you have done is to spew accusations. As I noted before, there are two sides to every story and the FACT that Miss Battle is still enjoying a career AND was not so long ago invited to perform for the Pope [a second time in her career], give weight to my belief that your accusations are much ado about nothing.

  • @SickMouth Of course they will. You live in America, do you not? The projected sales margins from her music and whether she can sing is "professionalism." Do not delude yourself. You are a music industry studies major, so you MUST know that professionalism goes to pot when there are dollar signs on a signed contract. If your university professors have filled your head with other notions about how the industry "works," you should think about adding a minor to your major of study: business ethics.

  • @MageSutek It's when you compare an unprofessional classical singer with an unprofessional pop singer that it gets to the point of snobbery. See my point?

  • @SickMouth No, sadly I do not. Your point is missed on me, for I lack a context to which I can attach your point. At the end of the day, what does it matter whether someone is classically trained or just happens to sing pop music well? What relevance does that have on professionalism? If the singers are acting unprofessional, it matters to no degree what genre in which they choose to behave unprofessionally. As far as snobbery goes, my dear, people who reside in glass houses should not throw...

  • ...stones. I just had the "occasion" to peruse some of your videos on your channel. One thing really popped out at me, and please do not take this as a slight, but the arrogance you exude in speaking drips mellifluously from your videos. You purport to engender respect through showing respect to others, yet you speak to and of others in a manner I would not use to address a dog. How do you reconcile this dichotomy? Is it just a gimmick or do you honestly believe that you afford the respect...

  • ...to others that you demand of them in return? If you truly believe that, the degrees of hypocrisy stemming from that disclaimer on your channel are staggering. You allege you are a philosophy major. One of the first tenets of credible philosophy is to decry sophistry. Your recent video in which you attacked a Muslim with all manners of invectives and slurs was not terribly respectful. I might go so far as to say that some of it bordered on hate speech, which a university student should be...

  • ...way above, especially if studying philosophy, which invariably includes an understanding of morals and ethics. Few things that baffled me when I read your personal description was that you were an egalitarian feminist, or as men who like their testicles attached to their bodies call it, an unethical hedonist. For a young lady who just got finished bashing someone's belief system as just "irrational shit" needs to reflect on that “respect” part before venturing into feminism of any sort,...

  • ...lest you run the risk of being framed as a horse's ass, which is never a good thing. As a side note, be careful with feminism, as it can be overwhelming, even for feminists; even libertarians are critical of egalitarian liberal feminism because, on their view, liberalism cannot support the claim that the right of some against coercive interference may be violated in order to promote the autonomy capacities of others, like we find in affirmative action programs, or in the substantial...

  • ...taxation that would be necessary to fund the social programs egalitarian liberals endorse. It is a slippery slope. Then I was confused about the "atheist-agnostic" self-description. Which is it? You seem really atheist happy, especially because you handed the poor bastard you attacked over to not one YouTube atheist to be vivisected after you had your killing, but THREE YouTube atheists, who frankly delight in making people miserable, whether their victims believe in God or their tea leaves.

  • And in doing so, you had a virtual orgasm at the thought of them "ripping apart some of these arguments from [qwertyfshag]." Yow, that gets my juices boiling over. So much respect there, Susie. Anyway, you are going to do what you are going to do, but if you are going to do it, you might want to inject a little class into your "debates," which are really just cyber gangbangs. In closing, the one thing that just floored me, really, is that you are a student at UIW, which is a reputable...

  • ...institution of higher learning in the southwest US. But what gets me is that it is a Catholic Christian institution whose mission statement "welcomes to its community persons of diverse backgrounds, in the belief that their respectful interaction advances the discovery of truth, mutual understanding, self-realization, and the common good." I guess my question would be why the hell would you enroll in a school that so clearly conflicts with every tenet of your system of core beliefs? It is...

  • ...tantamount to a vegan begging for employment at a slaughterhouse. Every guiding principle established by the school's progenitors stand in opposition to the drivel that spouts from your videos. To what end? I would think it comical if you were not paying such high tuition to sit in on a Catholic education. But you do and you are. Very weird on so many levels. I have digressed a bit, but I tend to do that. College is a good place to start growing up. Try some humility and empathy for starters.

  • @MageSutek I'm only going to that school because they are one of TWO universities in my entire state that offer the degree I want to earn. We all do what we need to do to get by when we're young. Sometimes I'm forced to shop at WalMart because it's cheap and as a college student I need to save money, but I hate WalMart because they exploit people. But once I'm more independent...

Humility and empathy? Sir, you have just demonstrated that you have none. Goodbye, you psuedo intellectual.

  • @SickMouth I anticipated that you would turn my critique of your behavior into something personal, and you succeeded admirably by calling me names. Obviously you know nothing about me, nor I you, save what I can infer from what you choose to do and say online. My suspicion is that you have reacted the way you have because you are not used to being called out on legitimate points concerning how your conduct affects others. I suggested humility and empathy, because in the video I cited, you...

  • ...afforded your "victim" none. In fact, you went out of your way to ensure that you could bring on the maximum criticism and cruelty by recruiting three other hate mongers on YouTube to eviscerate the guy after you got finished doing the same. How is that "right" by any standard of the word? I did not demonstrate a lack of those qualities in myself by calling you out, I exposed your clearly malicious inclination to harm another person and clad the act in a deceptive cloak of philosophical...

  • ...debate. That is not philosophy, it is not right, and it is far from kind. Not sure if you have watched the news in the past six months, but people are throwing themselves off bridges because of the things that others say and do to them. Your remarks are not far from remarks I have heard from people "our" age that I have charged and put in jail. The problem is that once it is on the Internet, it cannot be undone, and there is nothing to mitigate your desire to engage in the behavior. You...

  • ...cannot dig into someone, hurt him or her, and expect it to be "okay." All this dude would need to do is prove he was injured by your speech and through your solicitation of others to do the same. That not only creates a problem for you as the instigator, but it shows you "arranging" the continuation of the hate speech with malice and forethought. While it is unlikely that he would bring a cause of action against you, do not think that it is not possible. At that point, the only...

  • ..."independence" you would be concerned with would be consideration of how you would no longer have any, because the state would have taken it from you AND you and your folks would be paying him a large sum for the rest of your natural lives. You can heed my warning or you can continue down the path you are on. Let me assure you that good free advice does not come around often, and almost never before it is too late to change. My intent was not to slight you, as I prefaced in my first comment.

  • I was trying to make an important point that I hope you will take to heart. I think you are a smart young woman, you are articulate, you no doubt have potential academically, and you attend a good school. Do not blow it by turning your right to free speech into something that gets out of control and ends up bringing someone down at your hand. It is not worth it. Laws change in America every day. The Internet is becoming more and more regulated all the time. As far as your school choice, I am...

  • ...fine with it. I think I would struggle if I were an atheist attending a Catholic school, so why didn't you go out of state? For the money you are paying to attend UIW, you could have gone out of state to a uni with your major of study and be surrounded by less "critical" bodies of people. As for Wal-Mart, I am not sure how they are exploiting people any more than Target or JCPenny, but I will take your word for it. I shopped at Wal-Mart in college and still do. Why pay an extra $ for the...

  • ...same tube of toothpaste at Target that I know is cheaper at Wal-Mart? To assert my independence? I have a feeling that maybe Wal-Mart is quite different in TX compared to it in NY or DC. Christ, Wal-Mart has even made its way to England. I drive by it every time I go home. You are not "less" of a person for shopping at a store that does not hit the class scale in your head, which is ironic, because you were just arguing with someone above about snobbery. Double standards? Be well & blessed.

  • @MageSutek Who said shit about it being about class? My family was very poor when I was little, before my dad got his big promotion -- I know about class. You're a presumptuous asshole, you know that? I said the reason I don't shop at WalMart is because they are the company that exploits the most people in the world. Learn to fucking read. I don't care about being seen as "unclassy." I care about whether or not I support the mistreatment of other human beings. So you can go fuck yourself.
