Interesting, it seems that Fox is the only News (I hate using that word with Fox) station that was pressing for an impromptu interview, in all the other pictures it seems as if the congressmen were surrounded by cameras, reporters, and microphones. Contextually, it seems that the two situations are different and that at that moment there may have been time for an impromptu interview so Grayson offered an appointment which of course Fox didn't want because that would mean it would be unedited.

It's not about that, it's about the fact that they have questions, and not everyone carries a list of answers in their pockets. If you know what they want to talk about you can make sure you're prepared to give them honest answers. Those other examples, whether you realize it or not, are usually planned for. Either a big event is happening and they want someone in particular's opinions, or someone needs face-time on media, and invites them everywhere.

@Newenlightenmentnow - Indeed it really is called this (maybe more in the UK than in the USA but I have heard the term very frequently in both countries.) I am not 100% certain where it got its name from but I suppose it comes from the practice of camera crews and reporters ambushing people in their home by just showing up on their door-step and ringing the bell and turning the camera on. It is done very often for investigative magazine-features. Hope this helps.

Interesting, it seems that Fox is the only News (I hate using that word with Fox) station that was pressing for an impromptu interview, in all the other pictures it seems as if the congressmen were surrounded by cameras, reporters, and microphones. Contextually, it seems that the two situations are different and that at that moment there may have been time for an impromptu interview so Grayson offered an appointment which of course Fox didn't want because that would mean it would be unedited.

If you know what they want to talk about you can make sure you're prepared to give them honest answers. Those other examples, whether you realize it or not, are usually planned for. You can always ask somebody if they are able and willing to give an imporvised interview on the spot. But if the person isn't, than you make an appointment.
Grayson has every right not to give an ad-hoc interview and to ask for an appointment to be made.
The person in the photo apparently was okay with an ad-hoc interview, maybe he even encouraged it.
But "door-stepping" in this situation, as every serious reporter knows, is a big no-no.

@Newenlightenmentnow - Indeed it really is called this (maybe more in the UK than in the USA but I have heard the term very frequently in both countries.) I am not 100% certain where it got its name from but I suppose it comes from the practice of camera crews and reporters ambushing people in their home by just showing up on their door-step and ringing the bell and turning the camera on. It is done very often for investigative magazine-features. Hope this helps.
