My guess is they're referring to Byzantine art, which was very abstract for it's time and was focused more on the symbolic rather than trying to represent reality through art. So if you are referring to the artistic movement, it would be possible to feel that way. It's like listening to Pearl Jam, don't you feel a little grunge when you listen to them?
