Thank You for this post! This song came out the year I was born but, my ma used to sing this with my church choir! We gonna go back and sing this song! Thanx again!
This is such a blessing to be able to hear and find this song. I remember when my mother used to walk around the house singing this song every since I was little girl, and I'm 29 now. I now truly understand what this song is all about. Thank You Lord!!!
Gospel has no age barrier, man that's so awesome!!!! My aunt used to sing this song in church and now that shes went on to that new land, I'm singing it, such an Honor. Love ya Lisa!!!!
this was such a blessing to hear. I'm 25, but I remember hearing this song when I was a little girl. I didn't really get it then, but my God! I now have an understanding for myself. thanks for posting!!!!!
Oh gosh! My Aunt would lead this song from well 1986 until literally present day. When you see her (for those who know her) go to the mic you WISHED it was this. Memories...and I'm only 26
ive been looking for this song for so long... im only 22 but i figured it would completely uplift my mother so i have been on the search for this song!!! I LOVE IT!!!
I used to hear this song on the radio while sitting in the back seat of the car as a child... all my mother listend to was gospel music... she kept it locked on Heaven 97 KHVN
mscelice30 "My grandmother use to lead this @ church with the high note lolol" Its another old song that they use to sing called 'FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE, I'LL SERVE THE LORD, I SHALL NOT STRAY FROM JESUS CHRIST NO I WANT TURN BACK..." thats some of the words lolol...do you know that one?
Love this song.. Please post more old School artists.. I miss the KTSU days from the mid to late 80's..Charles Tyrone, Carol Allen-Simmons, Ronnie Porter, V Michael McKay,etc!!
I am so grateful that you have put this song on here. I sing it with my church choir. I first heard it when I was stationed in Germany sung by the choir director of a Gospel Chapel Service. Thank you, Thank you!!!!!!
OMG...I haven't heard this song since...I don't know when. I'm like muziq08...I want this song at my homegoing celebration. It's an oldie but a goodie....and I am loving it.
I love this song as well and evangelist at my church use to sing this since I was young enough to remember...and I am 21 now so you are not the only young one...lol
Thank you so much for posting this song. I was raised Pentecostal and on the way to school me and some of the young ladies that went to church with me had our big yellow school bus on fire with this song almost every morning. God will give you a New Life! I know-know-know-know because He gave me one.
I remember our choir coming in at the back of the church, hich as Greater New Grove Baptist Church. The Late Rev. Paul Jones was my pastor. This is my favorite song.
My choir just rehearsed the song last night (for Sunday morning)! I hadn't heard it in years; it brought back memories of my staying awake late at night to hear it played on Shreveport's former FM Gospel station.
@whatuwatchingjoe Sadly, she went home to be with the Lord some time back. What a mighty God we serve though, that He would bless and anoint her with this great musical blessing that WE still treasure, long after her passing.
Thank you so much for this posting. My grandmother sung this song and today marks the 20th anniversary of her murder. You don't know what a blessing it is to be able to hear this song anytime I need to. Thank you and God Bless!!!!!
I am so glad I found this song. I use to sing lead in the early 90's and we were blessed by the profoundness of a brand new life. I'm inspired to sing it in the year 2009. I know it will still be a blessing. I've been trying to locate another old song entitled "The Jesus Chant". I forgot who sang it. I know it is a black gospel choir. Can anybody help me. I believe in 1980-1990.
Me too!!I love this song and was desperately looking for it. My sister lead this song with our womens'choir several years ago and we tore the church up. We used to sing this song at my old church quite often after that. My sister found it. Thanks JayEM86 for the post!!
I guess because I was only 9 back in '86 and was barely playing the drums I didnt really pay attention to the other instruments and couldn't appreciate the total musicality of this song. I had never paid attention to the chord that the BASS GUITARIST played at :45, and he repeated it at 1:30 and 2:26.
Lots of James Cleveland's works from the mid 70s until his death had that mean bass guitar in it. And if you listen to some of the old gospel from the late 40s to the 60s, instead of the bass guitar, they used the bass pedaling on some of those Hammonds with the old cabinets. They could sound pretty "mean" back then too. There's a video here of Tramaine Hawkins singing "What Shall I Do" at his funeral. The bass in that one is great! And nope, I don't have "I Can't Feel at Home".
On that same note, if you want to hear some really mean Hammond bass, listen to anything by any group recording with Savoy records from around the mid 50s to the mid 60s, and turn up the bass. Esp. on "Plant My Feet on Higher Groud" by The Davis Sisters and "Mary Don't You Weep" by the Caravans (the 1958 rendition, though the 1988 rendition from the Stellars has nice bass guitar in it). They're both on YouTube, look them up and listen for yourself.
Yes Sah........... This is the Jammmmmmm! I used to lead this on the choir when I was lil boy........Back in the late 80's early 90's. That was back when I had alto range. lol ;-) love this song!
Now this is the song that wake you up on a Sunday morning when you didn't want to get up back in the day. The choir coming down the aisles from teh back of the church.. Sis. Hicks in lead form, and this was before they started putting the cuffs in the sleeves of the robes... Olivia B. Walker was a great part of Texas Southern University.... R.I.P.
My, My, My, this song takes you way back in the day, on a Early Sunday Morning, the Choir used to walk down the isles in their choir robes, and tare this song up!
my dad used to play this on his radio show, i was five yrs old and my mom said i used to sing this song with so much passion, i just found it and i don't remember..but God..oh my this is my song!!!
Solo:I moved from my old house and I moved from my old friends I moved from my old way of strife Thank God I moved out to a brand new life.(Repeat) He changed my old way with words He changed my old low leveled mind He changed my heart and gave me a new start Thank God I moved out to a brand new life Cant you see I'm a new man Don't You know I got a new name And one day I'll live in that new land B/c I moved out to a brand new life....
I got a new walk I got a new talk I got a new look I got a new name I got a new heart I got a new mind And I got a new home And a new start is coming my way B/c I moved out to a brand new life Can't you see I'm a new man Don't you I got a new name And one day I'll live in that new land B/c I moved out to a brand new life (Repeat)

Some of the "meanest" sounding bass ever recorded can be found in a lot of gospel songs from the 70's and 80's.
JayEm86 3 years ago
I guess that does makes sense coming out of the "funk" era which was known for having some of the "nastiest" bass lines ever.
Do you have "I Can't Feel at Home" by New Jerusalem Baptist Church? That bass player was killing!!!
