Guy Pearce plays the jealous guy pretty damn good..this whole movie was great....I know...everyone blabs about the book..but lookit..the books are ALWAYS better...so what's the big deal. All the actors did a great job.
Such a great movie. I need to read the book. Mercedes is so hot. Edmond is the everyman who only wants the woman he wants, and unfortunate victim of his own friend's scheme of jealousy.
from the get go this is the second time i've seen the film and as i'm reading the book at the moment i can safely say i much prefer the latter. the language/etiquette in the conversation is much better and more fitting for the time! plus some characters are the same some arent and why is fernand a shipmate he wasn't in the book?? i like the fact it makes the history between dantes and him stronger which makes a bigger impact later but it was fine the way it was! bt they did cast mercedes well :)

This movie is bad, very bad!It isn't faithful to the novel of ALexander dumas, the count of monte cristo.A total nonsense.A waste of time and money. No comparison with other versions with Jean marais or Richard chamberlain. Forget this movie very quickly.
@friendzr4eva you sure haven't read dumas!quite the opposite and don't know older versions a million ways bettter and more faitful man,you know nothing at movies of quality!just read dumas "conte of monte cristo"in french!i am french and can tell you that this version is not like the books at all, very free from the book!the book it tenfold better!!!!!
@fisteberg For your information, I actually have read the book. The plot of far greater than the movie movie makes it out to be. But in order to cover it's entirety, the movie would be incredibly long. Hence why there's The Count of Monte Cristo series available to watch.
Anyways, even if this movie doesn't cover every aspect of book, it's still enjoyable to watch.
Papillon is a good book, :) but since you claim to be french I'm assuming you've already read it.
(continued because i was running out of space)...and there's a scene (where Fernand tells Villefort, "Inform Mercedes that Edmond Dantes has been executed") and a line ("I will change my identity") in the trailer, which are not included in the film. They're not even available as deleted/extended scenes on the DVD. can anyone please tell me why this material was cut from the film and not included on DVD?
This film version of Dumas' epic tale really captures the spirit of it, much more so than the 1999 miniseres (which had a blasphemous scene of Edmond breaking into a church and telling Godthat he's taking His place, and an implied sex scene between Edmond and another character invented for the miniseries, among other liberties). My only complaint is that the gendarme who informs Edmond that he's under arrest in the trailer is not the same one in the movie...
@vincentvalentinedark Have we succeeded? We think so. Before long we shall have covered with our narratives an enormous period of time; between the "Comtesse de Salisbury' and the "Comte de Monte Christo" five centuries and a half are compresed. Well, we assert that we have taught France as much history about those five centuries and a half as any historian. This passage is from The Companions of Jehu which was written by Alexandre Dumas pere.
@vincentvalentinedark This passage is from The incredible marquis by Herbert Gorman entitled the soldier of fortune(chapter six) It was natural that Dumas believed implicitly in the magic of somnambulism, in animal magnetism and in chiromancy. No Haitian negro dancing before his Voodoo altar was more superstitious than Dumas. Home, to Dumas, therefore, was an authentically inspired adept in communicating with unseen world.
@vincentvalentinedark "Behind the ostensible government sits enthroned an INVISIBLE GOVERNMENT owing NO allegiance and acknowledging NO responsibility to the people. To destroy this invisible government, to befoul this unholy alliance between corrupt business and corrupt politics is the first task of the statesmanship of today." PRESIDENT THEODORE ROOSEVELT, 1906
@vincentvalentinedark "The minority, the ruling class at present, has the schools and press, usually the Church as well, under its thumb. This enables it to organize and sway the emotions of the masses, and make its tool of them."
~ Albert Einstein, letter to Sigmund Freud, 30 July 1932
@lolpranksta Same here. I was always curious about the movie that V loved to watch and I'm so glad I followed my curiosity and watched to movie and read the book. Amazing!
just one question. if fernand is of noble birth how is he friends since childhood with a catalan girl and a dyslexic sailor. In the book he was of common birth but amassed wealth and title as a soldier.
Most people think the French are "cowards", "pansies", just because they are kind respectful and very romantic people that choose passion over violence. The french in the 1800's were some of the worlds best swordsmen, greatest poets and muses, some of the greatest writers hail from France. They are a flemboyent and eccentric people, and Paris is arguebly the most beautiful and artistic city in all the world, and don't get me started on their wine.
@hussun2021 The people who think the French are cowards are the same type of people who think Italians are mobsters, Americans are all fat, and Africans are less intelligent. Stereotypes are sad, and the people that fall for them are even sadder.

this movie is the best! My fav! :) but but the girl pisses me off! hmph!! she goes and marries his best friend like a dam month later after wth...!!! liar stupid girl!!! ok im venting!
@swnas To be very technical, (and following the book) it was about a year, I think and she thought he was dead. She had no idea that Fernand had betrayed him. I understand why you'd be upset with Mercedes, but also try to look at it this way...she had lost all she loved and the only person there was Fernand. I don't really like him, but he was the one there for her during sadness. She missed Edmond lots, but thinking he was dead she sucked it up and tried to live life. She tried to be strong.
@swnas um yeah but she was pregnant and a woman and unmarried...it really only makes sense that she marry him. her only love was thought to be dead. what was she going to do wait for her life to get worse and oh then maybe get married after a little while longer? i think she did the right thing for her time. i love this movie! and i love mercedes :)
I liked this movie, I like anything Jim Caviezel is in. This is a great story about love, commitment, friendship, betrayal and it shows the lengths a person will go to avenge themselves. Very well done. I'm not one to take a book and sit down and read it, I do read but only for information. Good movie I think.

I will stop watching it though just wanted to see if the pictures in my head matched the characters and settings in the movie. The first impression is (as usual) the book and the imagination of it all is sooo much better!
i know i hear the film is different from the book but it is still wonderful. im just seeing this for the first time!! i love it!! the love story is great and his overall struggle and rising from the ashes. i love this beginning to when he and mercedes are so in love. even with the way things played out she still loved him wholeheartedly its just that you know... life comes at you fast lol

Just finished the first chapter.. or the plot as it is called in the book! Just out of curiosity I searched the name and this came up.
