I was at this show, first concert held at the then brand new basketball stadium in Houston. The arena was one of the first to use jumbo video screens and cameras around the floor. Glad someone had the sense to say this footage. Great show, live straight ahead rock n roll. Moon was so confident in himself he didnt feel the need for a drum riser.
Surprisingly good video quality for the age of this. I saw somebody post that this was on the Who's Next album... No - No it wasn't on the original release of Who's Next... That album has been remastered at least twice that I know of... It was on the original Odds and Sods album which has also been remastered a couple of times as well...
@sukie584 The OX might not be visible..BUT oh how US WHO fans know his mighty glorious rumble!! 'Everybody calls me the quiet one, you can't see, but you can hear me!'
If I could have any freeze frame of a person at a certain place in time, it would be Pete Townshend in 1975, hands down. He was just so... MMM hot damn.
@saimon1969 It was greatness.....Gave me a real appreciation for Quadrophenia. The back up band was Lynard Skynard doing their first US tour.....We had heard one song by them on the radio (Simple Man) that day....So the very first time I heard Free Bird was live as an encore....It was quite a show.....Lynard Skynard was good but the Who of course were better.
@lwplwp I saw that tour, too. @ The Cow Palace in San Fran. Keith passed out at his drum kit. Lynyrd Skynyrd was great. First time I ever saw an opening act get called back for an encore... (Free Bird)
oh, definitely...and the part at the end "don't really happen that way at all..." PLUS moonie's gong...it's such a magical sound! my favorite Who song EVER...
I still like to Who's Next Reissue version the best!
I understand this song is strongly improvisative, but a little bit of structure never hurts, and the Young Vic Theater performance on Who's Next Reissue is a bit more structured then most versions here on YouTube.
i love that verion but Roger never says the last line "theres only one who can really move us all" is missing that is like the most emotional part, in this verion the last section is missing and it just buggs me that that is like the best part
Not in my opinion. Leeds '70 is a Tommy tour-Who firing on all cilinder, while Young Vic is the post Who's Next band just finding their feet. They were going to a higher level, but the growing pains were still too audible IMO. Naked Eye from that gig is the definitive version IMO, even though Rog forgets a verse.
My preferring the performance to Leeds doesn't have to conflict with your take on what it represents. BTW, doesn't Who's Next Deluxe indicate that Young Vic (early 1971) was a warm up for the Who's Next tour, as the album hadn't been released?
@MrGb1965 The Young Vic performances were supposed to be in the Lifehouse movie, but they weren't good enough to include; Pete was also the only one who had any clue about what Lifehouse was about, anyway. Lifehouse was cancelled, and most of its recorded material became Who's Next.
This is a glorious clip of The Who with a less known song that to me, is one of their best. I think this clip does the Who a bit of justice with the fact its all of the original, and an live interpretation that just... well, I need a ShamWow for my chair, thank you. :)
This version isn't bad-just different. Moonie actually could relax and keep a beat. I wonder if this was his idea or the band told him to save himself for longer songs
Yeah. Tough call. I dig the bluesy feel of this but something about when they blast into it after Rogers first vocal (like off of Who's Next Deluxe CD 2) that just gets you going.
Its definatly the best version without the fast riff, the ringing sound of Pete's guitar is amazing on this, So both versions are wonderful. An incredably underatted song, atleast they kept on playing it.

This is an amazing performance but where the heck is John. The most amazing bass player and he is often left out of the tapings.. Such a shame..

Hey, ManiacDrummer1212, if you've listened 100 times, you do get it. Like we all do - the words are icing, but not necessary to the best rock songs.

Yeah, the Young Vic version is incredible. Dare I say I like that (whole) performance even better than 'Leeds?
