This goes out to my hip headz. I love this music we are sampling and that is great but lets take it further and learn how to create music from scratch. Basically when you sample a track like this or any other great soul tune try replicating the makeup of the song then see what you come up with. I say that because youtube is a great way of getting your stuff out but there are plenty of bad sampling examples out there which makes the great art form of hip hop look lazy.. Keep creating !!!!
damn, another timeless piece, havent heard it n years, and it's doing the do today! One of our greatest talents, gone too soon. RIP baby, job well done as an artist and activist.
I'm from the Chi and this man was part of my family so I've been up on Curtis of course since day one. If you only heard this because you saw Jumping the Broom...it's something, but I still feel it's a shame that this song wasn't part of your life previously......let's step our music game up people!!!!
My father would sing this to my mama when I was younger. I knew what it was to be totally in love like Curtis Mayfield is singing, "a great big expression of happiness"!!! This is a song for the ages its timeless!!!!
Heard this sampled in a Kanye West song and decided that the original version absolutely destroys anything that will ever sample this, even Terrace Martin who killed it with his sax but just still couldn't compare to this magic.
wow i cant say enough how astounded I am at this piece and Mr. Mayfeild. i am 30 yrs and i miss they days when they made real music before I was born.
I was nineteen when I first heard this song. I just had my sixtieth birthday and the lyrics still touch me as deeply now as they did in those by gone days of my youth. My beautiful Neubian Queen these words define the "Makings of You"
She in her birthday suit cus of the damn cake, now theres crumbs all over the damn place and she want me to cum all over her damn face - Kanye West :')
@yogi2016 LOL! I feel the same way. I'm 24, and while I can selectively listen to music that comes out now.. I always always have these classic songs heavy in rotation all year around..
I had the opportunity to meet Curtis Mayfield in 1969 when myself and my cousin made trip to Chicago to visit Eddie Thomas who had partnered with Curtis to form the record label CurTom Records.
Curtis Mayfield is not only a lyrical genius but also a visionary...a truly gifted musical artist whose work is still relevant today.
I was in high school (Dorsey in LA). My girl and I at the drive-in; the movie was Claudine starring James Earl Jones and Diana????? This was the lead cut on the soundtrack. Must have been 1967 or 68? Anyway, thanks for the memories!
This is the music that we grew up with and for that I will always be grateful but that does not stop me from enjoying today's music life is simple if you listen "ENJOY"
Look I love Curtis Mayfield, more than anything else. He's my IDOL for song writing, playing and singing, I love oldschool music from especially jazz and soul. But you can't determine what's real music or what isn't based on the fact you dislike the current music out there.
@ doc2skate...I totally agree with you..and when I heard Kanye's "The Joy"..i instantly thought the same thing...but he never fails to amaze me...I did a great job with this sample!!!
@ doc2skate...I totally agree with you..and when I heard Kanye's "The Joy"..i instantly thought the same thing...but he never fails to amaze me...I did a great job with this sample!!!
One of my biggest fears is someone trying to "sample" this song. I'm still trying to get over that "sample" of "Love on a Two Way Street". A song that helped me get past a time of rejection in my life (of course EVERYTHING is drama when you're 13).
Oh, well, that's the way of the world, I guess. Just hope whoever "samples" this song doesn't F*CK IT UP too badly.
@doc2skate pete rock sample this song for kanyes song the joy..he did it justice foreal i think dilla sampled it too i cant remember the name of it though
Man, I feel and understand what Mr. Mayfield was teaching us. Not to sound like a negative person, but today's music lacks Soul & substance. Is it a sign that the planet is decaying? Meaning, no more CD stores, real musicians are far & few between, this generation only copies (samples) real music, the record companies are only giving deals to mediocre rock people or ignorant rappers who can barely spell their names.
the lyrics, the voice, the music...this is what you call talent to it's trueth form..not the garbage we have today,, I just thank the father above to have bless us with the likes of Curtis........
As cool as Curtis Mayfield is singing this song, Gladys Knight and the Pips did their thing with this track too. I have always liked this song even as a kid.
