I have read : just before this concert Alphonze Mouzon was fired because he had a strange comportment with the cuivre section .... That was "la goutte d' eau qui a fait déborder le vase" de ces "humeurs de merde" (JZ) qui "n'avait rien à voir avec la musique" (MV). Good tunes but a little strange weather here ..... :)
@mymoonjujumymen According to Brian Glasser, Mouzon was fired after the performance, not before. That's Zawinul's version, though, which differs markedly from Mouzon's testimony. What was the source of your quote?
@middlebit Sorry i have a bad english ^^ After Yes .... My source ? :
Christophe Delbrouck Weather report in Le mot et le reste .... (I drop a adresse for you in private message if i can ^^)
....Page 141, a very good book for sure. But ....that was a great group anyway ... Alphonse a great drummer Yes ! .... Weather report a source for eternity ..... :)
Saw this lineup at Ronnie Scott's - minus Skidmore & Surman - around 1971 - 72 I believe. Little did I know then that I would become an ardent fan after hearing Mr Gone.
Early line up of W:P: I´m always surprised, what rare Jazz collaborations can be seen on YouTube. W.P. was the world wide famous Jazz band, led by Joe Zawinul & Wayne Shorter. The addition of John Surman & Alan Skidmore, two very fantastic legendary british Jazz musicians (and less known than Shorter & Zawinul) is unusual.I think that was a kind of "workshop thing" than (MPS and Joachim Ernst Behrendt involved?) Thanks for posting this....
middlebit, thanks for posting these clips (parts 1 - 4). Early Weather Report is by far my favorite period of their music. I would love to have a recording of this session. Too bad it's not readily available.
No problem at all! I never believed in imprisoning perfectly good music anyway. I'm not aware of any plans to release new material of Weather Report, but who knows, now that Joe is gone? So, I can't help you in your search, but may I suggest you get the free realplayer plugin so you can download these clips using internet explorer.
You're welcome! Apparently, this show was to cause the departure of Mouzon, so I guess it's historically significant. According to Zawinul (quoted in Brian Glasser's book "In a Silent Way"), the drummer did not appreciate the added musicians and felt the need to openly express his discontent during a wet visit to the bar afterwards, in presence of these players. Zawinul did not approve of his lack of respect and tact and gave him his walking papers. Mouzon has a different version, of course!
i believe the motif at 2:18 is Directions...

Hey, does anyone know the name of this piece? The theme [2:18 - 2:40] is familiar, but I just can't place it...
