Of all the great metal shred virtuosos, Friedman's note selection is, to me, the most interesting. He knows the changes and - seemingly - a wide variety of scales that will fit over the changes. And his vibrato is impeccable. He's never played a boring solo. I'm glad he made it. I remember listening to his stuff from the band Hawaii, way back when. One wonders how "out there" Marty would've gone if Jason Becker hadn't gotten sick and he and Marty continued to collaborate. I love Marty's playing.

Marty Friedman is the best heavy metal guitarist ever... without using the blues.

He`s got the blues inside. he can play other scales but with more feeling than any other guitarist. the way he makes his guitar cry, and the notes he imagines and places into the song are just incredible.

I would say that's Marty's natural picking technique, but in many interviews he stated that he purposely picked like that because he doesn't like that sound of muted notes very well when picking on the lower strings especially.... but either way who cares, people seem so in awe at his picking when its just common gypsy picking, only most people who use it are acoustic gypsy jazz players.
