Oh well. I won't let this ruin my obsession with Phantom. It'll still be just as magical and it doesn't seem to bother other Phans. =) Hugh is so cool. That's awesome that you know him!
Some of the show is recorded?...oh. That's disappointing to hear. especially if the title song is recorded. yikes. this sucks because now I'm less excited to see it. =(
Everyone is different, but knowing the title song is pre-recorded doesn't really ruin the show in the least. I knew it long before I saw it for the 1st of 20+ times and, since then, I've learned a lot of other production "secrets" and the show is still amazing and magical every time.
Yeah I guess you're right. It doesn't really matter as long as it is Phantom. I just started getting into it (and completely obsessed with it) since its coming on tour to where I live. I love the story line and the sets and stuff look incredible. I definitely can see that I'd be hard to do some parts of the Phantom's role live. Especially Why So Silent. I won't let this info bother me and ruin my excitement. =) Hugh is so cool.
I won't let this spoil my obsession with Phantom. Either way Phantom is Phantom. It's still going to be magical and its still Phantom singing. =) It'd be hard to do the title song live I didn't notice the blocking before. Plus Why So Silent would be hard to do too.
Somehow I find it... I dunno, relieving that MOTN is live, I totally understand having most of the songs recorded. I mean, walking in that Red Death costume down the stairs is challenging enough, look up the actor who took a spill down the stairs as the Red Death while the song was recorded. I don't remember who was playing the phantom when that happened though.
Which songs are on tape beside the title song? I don't think MOTN is since I've been there at times when actors have messed up lyrics. I could imagine some of the off-stage voice overs perhaps like when the phantom sends another letter to mme. giry in the second act...
You're correct. MOTN is live, but the voice-overs when the Phantom is heard from off-stage are recorded, as is much of "Why So Silent" due to the jaw on the skull mask.
Does anyone know if all these pre-recorded songs are the same in the London version as on Broadway?? It would be nice to know. Because I could most definitely say that Earl Carpenter's "Seal my fate..." was different and more mocking the day I saw him than the recordings here on youtube...
I knew about the title song being pre-recorded but not some of the other ones. Hmm, interesting to find this out. I just learned something that I didn't know about this show. Thanks Hugh. :) I've never seen the show where the pre-recorded music cuts out, stops, doesn't work right, etc. I'd love to be in the audience when this happens though. I'd be rofl over it! Hugh's a sweetie in person!
I was lucky enough to be there one night when they did it without the recordings because some producers were auditing the show. It was an AMAZING performance. I've also been at different shows where Hugh's mic cut out on him and he had to sing unamplified. He sounded better without it
Very carefully, I guess. It's not impossible to sing with that blocking, just more difficult since they have to go from the mirror up to the travelator, then down to the boat in a short time. The next day, I asked him if they'd sung it live. He said yes and was glad I'd noticed the difference, but I didn't ask for details and he started chatting about something else.
Thank you so much for posting those videos and the useful informations! And I agree with the interviewer... It's a musical... It's supposed to be LIVE. I understand it's demanding, but... =/
I think Seth was referring to "stupid Christine with her back to the audience" when she is doing the cadenza in the title song. The audio of Seth's videos isn't always perfect.
Towards the very end the interviewer starts ranting about something that I couldn't quite catch, something about "back to the audiance" and Hugh says "oh that's true"
Thank you Paula for that great information, from the interview, it sounded like all but a few 'full songs' were pre-recorded. On a personal note, thank you so very much for bringing Hugh to my attention as I'm sure countless others. As a former professional musician, I am always on the lookout for greatness and Hugh has that greatness in so very many ways I believe. Should he ever return to the role of the Phantom, I will make sure and be there to see him in person.
The pre-recorded tracks include the title song, the voice-overs in Notes I and Notes II, and most of Red Death, and the "I'm here...I'm here/Seal my fate" bit. There are rare times they do the full show live (I was at such a performance in September 2005)
The Overture is sometimes prerecorded as well. There have been a couple of times were the audio suddenly stopped for a few seconds--Owen-Jones' final performance was one of them. Whoops!
Paula i just can't believe ppl'd post rude n sick stuff ab Hugh. can't believe it!

Hmm...If the "whole role's on tape", why is there no soundtrack available with Hugh singing the Phantom?
I really wish they'd sell one. The recordings I can get are of Michael Crawford or Gerard Butler, and neither of them sounds as good in the role.

Stage. This was filmed a year or two before the film was even released.

It's OK...the comments don't show up until I approve them. I just have to do that because some people post really sick or rude stuff.

ok is it for sure that the tital song and the overture is pre-recorded and if so is the wondering child song also pre-recorded to?
okilodolicy 2 years ago
Yes, the title song is prerecorded as is most of the Overture, but "Wandering Child" is not pre-recorded.

So how would hugh sing all of that if the tape isn't playing? If he's busy climbing all of those ladders and holes?
