"Oh... for fuck's sakes, stop letting off fireworks & shouting & screaming, I'm trying to sing a song! I mean I don't care, if you don't want to hear it, you know... fuck it. I'm sure there are a lot of people here who do want to hear it. Why don't you just be quiet? You want to let your fireworks off go outside & let them off out there. & if you want to shout & scream & holler go do it out there, but I'm trying to sing a song that some people want to listen to it. Well,I was on the floor, half way to the front, at this concert at the 'Stade' but don't remember this incident...remember a lot of drugs around,I for one sold out on a bunch of mesc.,and remember walking around the floor after the concert ended and seeing lots of interesting things..got some photos...
here is the fully part i can tell: there are 2 different sources for this show, both from the crowd, but this audio is taken from the fair sounding show, but it sounds so good here. clear and not so 'crumpled'/ i guess the sound was tweaked
i can tell because of the subtle bump at the beginning
Thanks for posting -always wondered what this infamous event sounded like.
Just saw him at Madison Square Garden the other night and he admitted that he was 'a miserable young man' back in those days, then mentioned how he was 'a lot happier now' .He then kind of smiled at the crowd (I was close to the stage so I saw it) and said tongue-in-cheek "Not that most of you should give a shit anyway...' It was a LoL moment...
this is supposedly the concert that roger lost it with the crowd, and ended up spitting on a fan that climbed over the barrier to him. I dont believe everything i read, but here is audio proof of the event, that changed music history. "the wall" was born shortly thereafter. the crowd here sounds very riled up and alive as was the case with most major stadium acts of the day. They used to throw fireworks onstage at Led Zeppelin Knebworth 79 concert as another example. interesting.
Pipe down out there, It's like Pete Townshend in recent years saying "Get On with it", one of the comments they got a lot with ppl who got restless in the crowd. Roger relates more to the early days of crowds keeping still and quiet during the shows, no matter how big. Listen to early 70s Led Zep, hear the crowds only cheer as the music starts and ends! That's how it was in the earliest days
I can hardly blame Roger at all. I mean, come on. You pay money to hear somebody sing, and then you sit there setting off fireworks? Ridiculous. Who started that stupid trend anyway?
I wish every artist said this at shows; it's for the sake of the audience (or, the portion of the audience who actually cares about the music). I love Roger :)
Pink floyd are not a pop group. The music is refined and every little sound has to be absorbed to fully get the trip. Lots of people used to go to their concerts because it was a fashion and that's what they were against in those years, i'm with Roger. Man it's like making a riot at an opera! Plain stuidity and childness
@eyesorbe Yea that make sense, so If I pay a ticket to a movie I can act like a jackass and fire some fireworks? As long as I pay right? Stupid argument, they are ruin for other people and that's what's fktd

Of course I'm being silly. But that's because the analogy is silly. A rock concert and a movie are 2 entirely different things. "Apples and Oranges", my friend.
Should the Beatles have told all their screaming fans to shut up so they could hear themselves play?

I has always amazed me how some audiences don't "get it". To me it is a total lack of respect when an artist is baring their souls and would prefer the respect of a silent audience. North American audiences are well known for creating distrurbances during "quieter" music. PF has so much dynamics! I fully understand Roger's anger. To me, what he said to the crowd is totally relevant. European and Asian audiences are, in general much more respectfull. Giving the artist the canvas of silence...

@23flowergirl Roger is "the Bleeding Hearts and Artists" type,he uses his emotion to help him propel his art, but he also wants people to be attentive, and the comment is correct, You hear Black Crowes do this a lot at unruly shows, and to ppl like me it's amusing as a bootleg archive, which I was in attendance at two such shows!
@23flowergirl David Gilmour and Roger Waters represent to the two major classes in England...Gilmour went to Public (private) Boys School in Cambridge; his father was senior professor of zoology at Cambridge University & Mum worked in film editing, producing and many other roles. Waters is working class -- when you watch any war - and all war is tragedy, and all war is Terror - up close you see that it's these coal-miners, laborers and so on who do the fighting
OK, so how do you know in advance if you are buying a ticket for a show where people are respectful and listen to the band or if you are buying a ticket for a show where people get drunk and shout out the whole concert.
Obviously Roger thought he was playing a quiet one, or he wouldn't have yelled at people.
When I pay for a ticket, I want to hear the band, not the drunk guy next to me yelling and whistling.
People forget that when these rock bands first started playing, audiences were very different. They sat very quietly and listened.
In fact this is the very reason Roger came up with The Wall. It's about the separation he felt from the audiences that seemed to come to the concerts for the wrong reasons. Not to listen to the music.
it was at madison square garden in NYC. It is Waters, and I think they even walked out on one of the concertsm it was a 3 or 4 night stand. One of the concerts was on July 4th.
Rogers is merely speaking for the majority of fans. I recall an incident years ago where a performer gave the audience permission to beat up a problem member of the audience. I can't say if that person was beaten up, but I understand someone surrendered themselves to Security and their protection.
people should be glad for this, this is the main reason roger water made the wall, because he was tired of people yelling screaming and getting drunk rather thanlistening to his music. people are just assholes and need to learn to enjoy the music instead of reckless screaming.
Fresno Ca. The worst audiences in the world. Monster truck events sell out. and the band Yes coundn`t sell 45 tickets for the reunion tour. Visalia is next. They woundn`t shut up fro ELP or the Moodies.
I was at MSG on the 4th of July, in the orchestra no less! One of my friends pussed out and traded his floor seat for a seat in the blues. They had to bring the pig back in, all the azzholes started to throw m-80's and other bs fireworks at it. 1977 was the greatest for me and all the super groups that came to NYC that summer. I went to see LZ 4 of the 6 nights the previous month, made me into a LZ convert.
Me too, friend! I went to night 6 of Zeppelin, then the July 3rd Floyd show, and Yes in August, I believe. I also saw Jethro Tull earlier that year at Radio City! I was 15 years old. I can't believe my parents let me do these things at 15. It's different world now.
yep, i still have the extra ticket (date cancelled)... it was 10 dollars! at the end of the show, roger said "goodnight houston, you were a good crowd"... i was right up front. never been the same...
I am unbelievably jealous of you. Im 15 and haven't had a chance to see Roger or DAvid. the closest thing i saw was Aussie Pink Floyd. Which was awesome but god damn do I want to go back in time!!!
"i mean i don't care! if you don't wanna hear it..ya know...fuck you, i'm sure there's a lot of people here who do wanna hear it. why don't you just be quoite!!"
"i want to listen to it"

Obviously Roger thought he was playing a quiet one, or he wouldn't have yelled at people.

This may have been the Montreal show in '77 which led to the Wall...

I heartily agree with Roger Waters.

I can't say if that person was beaten up, but I understand someone surrendered themselves to Security and their protection.

i do wanna listen to the song roggie!
pd. but sometimes when you're in a concert you're so excited you feel like you need to scream... but not during the whole song ...

thats right!

people should be glad for this, this is the main reason roger water made the wall, because he was tired of people yelling screaming and getting drunk rather thanlistening to his music. people are just assholes and need to learn to enjoy the music instead of reckless screaming.
