I miss the late '60s when I could get WABC Musicradio on my radio..I was 9 years old when I got the radio. I got WABC all the way down in southern NJ(Vineland).
I'm in my 50's now, hearing the old music is great!
I've worked in radio, but not currently. Someone asked me to describe the experience. I said it's like dating a beautiful woman that treats you like crap.
great clip. i recorded a few of those memorial day specials. i though i missed the last few but now i see it wasn't even on. the first i recorded the show was in 2002. still have the 10 cassettes. the next year i hooked up my dvd recorder to my small boom box and recorded 2 -6 hr disks, the tape thing was just too much work.
They switched to talk in May 1982, and stereo became popular around the mid to late 80's. There would not be much reason for stereo with a talk format.
@WABCRADIO77 As of around 1997, WABC did have Motorola C-Quam equipment installed, as seen in photos published on the Internet. However, they were no longer transmitting in stereo by then; I've had AM Stereo receivers since 1995 and I never received a C-Quam signal from WABC. They were also reported to have used Kahn AM Stereo in the '80s (after the death of Musicradio), but I have no direct proof of that.
If anyone would know, would be either Frank D'Elia or Johnny Donovan, both are still at WABC today, and are one of the few from the Musicradio days. You should try to contact them at WABC, as I think you have some good questions. Then after you find out, let Allan Sniffen and I know so that the info can get posted on the Musicradio WABC web site.
@WABCRADIO77 "Jim Hawkins' Radio 77 WABC Digital AM Transmitter Page" has photos of WABC's processing rack in 1997 showing several C-Quam exciters and modulation monitors, and the "List of all known AM Stereo Stations in the US, as of 28 June 1985" lists WABC as Kahn AM Stereo. But it seems WABC never promoted their use of AM Stereo, unlike WNBC, which used Kahn AM Stereo in the '80s and promoted it heavily (they later switched to C-Quam during the transition to WFAN).
@WABCRADIO77 Somehow I was under the impression that WABC ran C-QUAM but I may have just gotten some bad info somewhere along the line. That is one beautiful control room, though. With the trend toward automation and the general downsizing of everything, most modern studios look like there's not enough equipment in them to make things work! The racks of stuff to the operator's right are impressive and intimidating at the same time. :) JC
Dear God, was it possible for anything to sound BAD coming out of that WABC audio chain?

Were you guys running stereo that day? :) JC
BadEditPro 1 year ago
Nope - All the airchecks were mono, as that was what WABC was back in the Musicradio days. No such thing as a stereo WABC aircheck!

@WABCRADIO77 I thought WABC ran C-QUAM at one point... :) JC

...and not one piece of vinyl to be seen!
tubeie07 1 year ago
Yep - played off a hard drive, with the CD's as backup.
Even back in the day they were all carts.
Vinyl was only found in the production room where a turntable was used to transfer the music to carts.
I DO have the original WABC turntables!
WABCRADIO77 1 year ago
DO YOU! I would love to see a short video of them... Yes, carts... I used them in broadcast TV as well... Gotta love the CUEMASTERS!

What's the "XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX" annotations for? Because they don't seem to make any sense!
OldMusicOnVinyl1 1 year ago
There are some things in the studio that WABC would not want the general public to see!
So I gotta block it out.
I do hope to go back some day...!
