America is a Country... North America is the name of the continent America is in.
And if you think about it, "Unites States" is rather vague because there could be various counties who have states that are united. (Japan for instance could have their prefectures considered as "states")
Therefore the proper way to shorten USA (IMO) is... America by process of elimination because there is no other country that has "America" in it or any other nation that could be confused by it.
