Sharpening a Bowl Gouge

Stu what is the angle set to on your jig when you are grinding a deep fluted bowl gouge.

The Pdf Capneddie has plus other web sites that the Ellsworth grinding rig is sold on show the angle set to 40 degree's.

Just my opinion, but I think your sharpening geometry could use some work. IE: your jig's set-up regarding height from basket to center of wheel, distance from wheel, and also the angle of the leg on the wooden jig.

But, like I say, just how I would want it and what works for me. I use the Ellsworth 2-4-7 math, and then add the 2" in and 2" drop basket for the Avisera relief grind.

Capt. Eddie has videos that demonstrate all of this in great detail.

Lady Gaga has meat attire and you have the flip flops. Nice touch! Great video but being a new turner what really caught my eye is the wooden jig. I read the other postings but you never said if you were going to have plans to shoot a video on how to make the jig.

Nice I was told in High school wood shop by the teacher (my good friend) to just rotate it on the side of the wheel. wow lol I have a Robert Porkby bowl gouge I love it!

Great video, if you had that jig. You now need to do one that shows the construction of that great Jig with dimensions or sell the info as an e-bbok on ebay. I'd pay and so would lots of others.

hi stu, great video. i was wondering though, what is the point in a double bevel?

Hi Jamie

The double bevel gives you a smaller bevel, which makes the bevel more maneuverable, if that makes sense, it can get into tighter curves etc. The double bevel is for a fine cut not a large hogging off roughing cut.

It takes seconds to sharpen turning tools if you learn how to do it without having to use jigs.
