Why couldn't we have gotten someone else from FFXI. There are so many Elvaan and Galkas in the story that are much cooler than her (The galka Dark Knight for example). Hell, even Ajuido-Marujuido seems like a better pick if you HAVE to choose a taru.

I believe Zeid dies too at the end of the Bastokian Missions. Raogrimm would be a great character for Chaos side in his enraged form.... apart from the fact he'd stand about 3 times the size of any other character.

Eald'narche might have been a good choice for a villian since he is pretty much the cause of all the events in FFXI. Alot of things can be traced back to him... and the guy let's his own brother just die infront of him.

Actually though, I don't think she's considered a "Light Side" character. If you've seen her stage music, it's that of the Shadow/Dynamis Lord. This may be her new "Dark Side" persona they're coming up for one of the upcoming mini-expansions for FFXI...

I get what you're saying but I can't really see Shantotto as a truly evil character. She's definitely got her own ambitions and a ruthless streak in her, but I don't think the Star Sybil would have allowed her to remain so powerful in Windy if she thought that Shantotto could possibly turn evil.

I'm hoping that in her expansion she becomes possessed by some evil, which causes her to behave how she does. Considering how short the expan is, that seems like a good possibility.
