  • Gee, where were the cries of racism over the confederate flags being used back then? Oh yeah, America wasn't paralyzed by political correctness yet.

  • @talshiarr Political correctness is often over the top but are you supporting waving a confederate flag? To me it's like wearing a swastika on your sleeve. Stupid

  • thars ceazy to see aikman practicing at the old texas staduim then played there for dallas

  • Look at that old WCSC promo at the beginning with venerable Charlie Hall. Just as good as the CBS music here.

  • "With Dallas at his feet, the eyes of Texas are upon him." What a great line.

  • The theme music they still use to introduce today's college football games is timeless! Mad props to CBS for still keeping the song while other networks seem to use their flavor of the month type of song for their sports telecasts. Oh, and great intro to the game!

  • I was waiting for Nantz to say, "A tradition unlike any other: the Cotton Bowl."

  • Miss the old days of the SWC and the Cotton Bowl when bowl games meant something and you could have more than one bowl game deciding the national championship...

  • when did the SWC folded?

  • @thedude19766 -After the 1995-96 academic year. So the 1995 season was the last for the SWC

  • I disagree, this is such a great theme that CBS is still using it despite all the network execs getting their hands in the pot.

  • The theme music that starts at 2:53 is the same theme music they use today. It is a great college football theme. It is by no means antiquated.

  • great intros like these have disappeared from college football coverage, and it's sad.

  • damn, CBS did some great intros back in the day. now unfortunately they're contracted with the sec, so i'm drawn to them less.

  • Can't believe it's almost 20 yrs. wow. I remember this game. Aikman.

    This music is classic.

  • CBS's College Football theme music is sacred and they know they will never change it. If they do, a lot of complaints will be coming CBS's way.

  • Add Eli Manning to the list, did Eli work out at Texas Stadium or did Oklahoma State?

  • Ironically Troy Aikman announced Eli's Super Bowl but Troy would probably have preferred San Diego to be playing instead of NE.

  • great intro!

  • The day CBS changes the college football music, is the day they should cease operations.

    That music is almost sacred.

  • @schmoove2k6

Sacred is right, I got goosebumps listening to that.

  • Wow have times changed...if a producer made a 2:20 opening package like this one today they'd be fired on the spot. Hell, :60 opening packages aren't even that plentiful today. Boo short attention spans.

  • The older intros are so much better. They all seem to tell a story so much better. That and CBS has the greatest intro music ever!!!

  • On another video, I commented that CBS had not changed its college football music in about 20 years. This confirms it!

  • Troy Aikman is one of my favorite quarterbacks of all time, even though his starting record as QB was 1-15.

  • Charlie Hall in 08!

  • This is the 1989 Cotton Bowl, not 1988. The 1988 Cotton Bowl had Texas A&M beating Notre Dame 35-10.

  • Think back then all that mattered when watching the game is if it were in "Surround Sound." Now we are all furious if the game isn't in High Definition. In 20 more years if we can't smell the stadium we're gonna be upset.

  • It probably will happen.

  • Tim Taylor: Remember... If it isn't CBS StereoSound, somebody else makes it.

    (salutes)

    Arr arr arr arr arr.

  • i will NOT count on charlie hall.

  • Oh, you WILL count on Charlie Hall. And you will like it!

  • This was magnificent, albeit pointless. The BCS conferences can continue to delude themselves into thinking that these bowls, because of their tradition and pageantry actually possess significance. The truth of the matter is they don't and much like Auburn in 2003, yet another prominent BCS conference team will get screwed. Those a-holes that rob us of the joy of a playoff will soon have their comeuppance.

  • Nice video. It's hard to watch this though, considering the Cotton Bowl is moving out of the Cotton Bowl in a couple years. But I guess the Orange Bowl did too.

  • Interesting to hear a young Jim Nantz on voiceover. In nearly two decades his voice and style haven't changed a bit.

  • CBS predicted that Aikman would go to the Cowboys and he did and the rest is history.

  • But Tom Landry didn't get to develop him.

  • Well yeah he got fired that February. But Jimmy Johnson sure helped him out a lot with Norv Tuner's offensive system, Irvin and Emmitt, the huge offensive line.

  • Yeah we mis ol Norv in SF this year.

  • Yeah I bet so, I mean what the hell has happened to the 49ers. I can't hate them anymore since they stink so bad like I used to.

  • charlie hall did!

  • Yeah a lot obvious foreshadowing in this intro, especially with Coach Landry watching Troy practicing at Texas Stadium. Plus lets not forget about the Arkansas connections like Jerry Jones and Jimmy Johnson playing under Frank Broyles and Barry Switzer as an assistant coach under Coach Broyles back in the day and then briefly coaching Troy at Oklahoma and then later on with the Cowboys. It`s funny how things work out sometimes.

  • yep.

  • That's the '89 Cotton Bowl intro. Arkansas won the '88 SWC title which sent them to the game on January 1, 1989.

  • NO credit to Quinn grovey? lol

  • Not like he did anything in the actual game.

  • Sarcasm is hard to understand.

  • sorry, I was trying to reply to an eariler post about arkansas qb Quinn Grovey. Arkansas amassed a total of 42 yards offense in the game - 21 rushing and 21 passing, putting to rest criticism that Ken Hatfield's option offense lacked balance (that is sarcasm). It was total domination by UCLA.

It was pretty disappointing for hog fans, the team was much better than they played that day.

  • I remember during the 1988 season, they played a great MIami team (in the Orange Bowl) and almost beat them.

    I thought Grovey was a good quarterback 88, 89.
