I've seen P&B twice on stage, once with Willard White, who as he proves here owns Porgy as sure as Melchior owned Siegfried and Flagstad owned Brunnhilde, and I have one question: where's the rest of it? Neither of those productions or the Houston version I had on CD clocked in at less than 3 hours, which is about twice what's offered here. Looks and sounds great but appears to come up a bit short.
I am an usher at the Gershwins Porgy and Bess on broadway. While I am not used to this kind of show(I have worked at In the Heights and Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo), it is pretty entertaining. I routinely call women Sometimes Things lol
this music is just exquisite no matter who sings it.
However, the new production--The Gershwin's Porgy and Bess on broadway featuring Audra McDonald is transcendent. She has the most magnificient voice and was born to play Bess. Astoundingly fantastic production which I saw at the ART in Cambridge,MA. opens in NYC in January.
do we think this is a track they are lip syncing to? because i feel like if she was really singing at the beginning during summertime, that baby would be deaf. because you know, you have to yell/sing to project enough from a stage during an opera. even if there boom mics or whatever they're called. also, the men in the second song don't really look like they're singing live. great singers either way. just wondering.
Wow... i cant wait to watch this when i get home. thank you SO MUCH for posting the entire movie. I saw it as a child, but now want to view it as an adult. thanks so much!
@pastlifeconflict I didnt exactly mean {version} i should have said {production}. Ive been waiting years to see someone post this particular production of porgy and bess. Directed by Trevor Nunn. most importantly, its conducted by SIR SIMON RATTLE! which makes it the best. and i used those parentheses because the quotation marks key is broken. in case that confuses you.
@pastlifeconflict but isnt it awesome??? when she sings summertime its so light. but not breathy. or jazzy. best version/production ever. (all of its awesome. not just summerime)
I first say this movie my tenth grade year in high school and I have been in love with it since then..classic

Is this movie in 3D ? It kind of looks like it but I don't have 3d glasses to verify.

@FADaniels0626 are you referring to the opera as a play? or do you mean the actual play that this opera is based on?

@WarDamnSEC never mind. they definitely are. they aren't even opening their mouths enough. and they're vocal chords aren't moving with the vibrato

I have the 1972 Houston Opera version on my iPod; it's magnificent, but this is equally beautiful and lyrical.
