Ships turn faster, the faster they are going... reversing the engines would have made the Titanic turn at a slower pace, thus making the collision a certainty.
@mutley26 what?? what im saying is how can yr grandson been on the titanic?? and saying that if yr that old and can use the internet well done its a joke!
@cprich22 The I'm very sorry and you must forgive me, as I thought you were my ex-housekeeper, Miss Rosa Pokes. She's been adopting 'socks' and 'trolling' me something rotten on the internet since I sacked her for stealing the lemon Pledge and marigolds.
Indeed, according to the grapevine, her children have been taken away again.
that model is a beauty! watching this video makes me want to buy one of these, but i guess i'm too old for things like that now. wish i was still a kid haha.
Did you know that if Murdoch(who was manning the ship at the time of the collision) haden't stopped and reversed the engines, he would have saved the Titanic? Him doing so made the collision a certanty.
@MetallicasEdge That comment is quite correct, by reversing the engines he made a collision a certainty, he actually slowed the ships turn by doing so, still can't help but think they should have been going a lot slower due to the conditions, although hindsight is a wonderful thing, they may have had more time to react had the ship been going slower, but you are quite correct my friend.
@GRAHAM5020 i recently read the they sailed they kept sailing the ship even though it hit the iceberg instead of stopping and if they did stop a rescue boat would have been able to get to it before it sunk.
@jamiekenta Hi there. They did stop the engines after striking the iceberg, but itt was too late by that time, but by reversing the engines (And it would have been instinct) they slowed the Titanics turn. They might have missed the iceberg if they had not reversed the engines as the ship would have turned quicker, but we will never know now. Bearing in mind the conditions, they should have been going much slower in the first place, could have spotted the iceberg much quicker and avoided it.
@GRAHAM5020 oh i see, well in either case, the sinking of Titanic was a terrible loss of life, all I can say is rest in peace to those who died on this ship.
@jamiekenta I totally agree with you there. Although i feel the collision was avoidable, many lessons were learnt from the sinking of the Titanic, but all the same for those who died May God rest your souls.
@MetallicasEdge Many ships at that time had reverse steering systems. Lightoller intended to steer the ship right, but because of the uncertainty of the reversed steering, The ship turned left, and hit. Also the decision to keep the ship moving made the titanic sink two hours faster than it should have.
@MetallicasEdge You are very welcome!! I just learned it.it was on a yahoo article recently. Lightollers grandaughter or something Had found out somehow. No one wanted this to be told because they didnt want their reputations ruined.
@MetallicasEdge No - if he hadn't turned when they saw the ice berg to could have saved the ship - it was the scraping along the side with penetrated several of the watertight compartments that made the sinking of the ship certain. Reversing the engines simply slowed the ship - it didn't sink it. had he hit the iceberg head-on it would have only penetrated 1 or 2 of the compartments and the ship wouldn't have sunk.
@stevenesmond2 I am fully aware of that. I'm just saying, when he reversed the engines, he made the collision a certainty. I also know that if had only rammed the berg head on, the ship was likely going to float.
@MetallicasEdge Also they would have survived with a head on collision, Maybe one or two watertight bulkheads flooding, even the ability to continue on under her own power.
@MetallicasEdge How right you are...I've been studying the titanic since I was in like, 3rd grade. When I was in high school, I schooled my history teacher one day, so she made me teach the class the rest of the week on the Titanic. It was pretty fun, and I got extra credit...lol
Anyhow, if he would have hit it head on, they would have killed MAYBE 12 crew that were below deck, but could have stopped completely, and turned away from the berg, saving the ship...Sad story...
@Experimax Probably 100 or so would have been killed (remember 3rd class had cabins in the bow). Imagine, though, the ship would not have gone down and would have been PROVEN unsinkable! How many more ships would have gone to sea without enough lifeboats before tragedy would change things? Germany was launching its own liners that would carry 4,000 thanks to additional 4th class "sardine quarters". So many think the Titanic was the only one without enough boats. Not so.
@DCnightcrawler 3rd class cabens where 2 compartments back from the bow, damage would have only made it to the cabens...im sure that about 10 would have gotten killed...maybe 30 injured however the berg would have had to pass through 4 fire hydrants, 3 solid tanks of fresh water, a crewman's passage, a fireman hall, solid metal posts in the far bow, 3 anchors, an anchor crane, 24 hitches,23 empty rooms, 5 gears, and a double bottom, that would spare lots of force from the icebergs,
@MetallicasEdge wasn't it Quartermaster Hitchens who was at the wheel? and he even said he tried to turn away from the burg, but at last second he turned into it to try to make a head on collision to spare the ship...thats just what i read however...
@tomyv1661 I honestly don't remember. I'm almost positive the it was Murdoch manning the ship and Hitchens who gave the order to stop and reverse the engines. I'm problably wrong though.
@MetallicasEdge Apparently Murdoch saw the burg in plenty of time, instead of hard a starboard, he yelled hard a port. Thinking he gave the wrong order, he then said hard a starboard. Titanic would have made it even with a head on collision also.
@MetallicasEdge Quite true. Ocean liners of that size turn faster when they are going faster. If the Titanic would've turned just a bit more, it would've missed the iceberg entirely.
if they had of hit it hed on it wuld not of sinked it wud have put a big hole in the front and the warter wood hav been stoped with the warter tight doors but it got a big gash on the side making it sink
Thanks for your reply back .WHOA learned something , I never knew the Titanic had a stem eng. to turn the rudder, was that all the time while crusing, or only used for the tighter turns!? Was the rudder too small on the Titanic? When you see the real pics of her the rudder is always halfway out of the water. Seeems that would only give you 50% of its effectivness.
How far out of the water the rudder is won't effect it's effectiveness, when people say that the rudder was too small they mean that it wasn't long enough. Meaning when it was turned to full deflection it did not redirect enough water. If you look at pictures of Mauretania's rudder and compare them to Titanic's you'll understand what I mean.
The Real Titanic couldn't turn In time to avoid the Ice berg, did you find that the scale model was the same way as far as turning ..Is the rudder to small for the size of the ship?
Actually, maintaining their speed would have saved them. While he shouldn't be blamed, the problem was that Murdoch most likely ordered the ship's engines in reverse. A rudder on a ship like Titanic works by applying pressure to it, so that it can turn; so basically, the faster your Murdoch ordered the engines in reverse, there wasn't enough pressure put on the rudder to make it turn enough to avoid the iceberg.
@OlympicClassDandy You are probably right there, still feel they may have been better going a bit slower, as they would have had a much better chance of avoiding a collision...but your comment on the rudder is quite correct.
I'm going to take a shot in the dark here, saying that the model in the video probably isn't all too accurate from a turning standpoint. Titanic's turning system used a separate steam engine just to turn the massive rudder, which caused about a 30 second delay when turning the wheel hard over.
