Quoting from Matthew Bannisters book 'Positively George Street';" I met a Christian girl who lived in an all female flat in Hope Street. Good name. I toyed with the idea of writing a song about it. When i asked where all the Christian boys were she said 'They live up the street at Huband house. we call it Husband House'.and a song was born.... Such a great song and equally good snapshot of Dunedin in the 80's
I reckon its about getting married (husband) and settling down with kids - not something you want to do when you're young and in a band - it sure didn't work very well for Ian Curtis
@22ness0hayden Its a song written about Husand House in Dunedin where a group of christian boys lived. The singer was going out with a christian girl who told him about the place.
this is a truly terrific song but i can't work out how they let him get away with that vocal take for the first verse, its really nervous and bad, then he gets going after that
@22ness0hayden There was a flat of girl students in Dunedin that called the flat of boy students up the road as 'Husband House'. Matthew Bannister borrowed the name and concept. God it's a great song.
@22ness0hayden Matthew Bannister (the guy singing) knew some christian girls who flatted together in Dunedin. When asked about 'boyfriends' they told him about a house up the street from them full of christian boys that they referred to as 'husband house'. This was his response to his interpretation of the lives that these people lived. Its all in his awesome book Positively George Street which has to be the best NZ music book ever.
Beautiful. Just discovering the amazing talent from flying nun. Things would have been so different career wise for such great artists had they have been from Britain.

Great to hear this again, thanks so much! Agree with posts about van door opening to that great view down the peninsula. Oddly though it was the view of that big thermometer at the top of the Octogan reading 8 degrees that took me right back to growing up in Dunedin.
Was at Dunedin Uni same year as these guys and was friends. This was maybe their peak but my fav is Jane from Dunedin EP.Highly recommend Matthew`s book Positively George St for insights into that era and the band. Thanks jpdkiwi for the upload. You are awesome
I wonder why there's a fan on top of the amp in the shot where they're playing at the beach? Is it a comment on the fact that it's rarely hot on a Dunedin beach?
Nah, I reckon the fan is standard equipment when they play, to keep them cool under all the lights -- they probably just pulled it out as part of their normal set up...
3 points. #1 It's soooo funny how at 3.07 the drummer appears to turn his head in disgust after witnessing the guitarists twirling dervish wig out. #2 I should have been shredding that wave at 3.15. #3 What a lovely bunch of chaps and a thoroughly beautiful song to boot! Well done lads. It's gone straight to my favorites. Well, cherrio then.
Dont see too many 5 buck notes these days or bands as good as the ones flying nun had back in this era. Not many bands would come up to Putaruru and play in a band hall like these guys did. Awesoome.
So I'm at work in Toronto at 6 in the morning torturing myself with surf videos from Gizzy and the East Coast and then the fatal blow from this video. I'm packing up the wife and kids and going back to NZ. Bugger this.
lol. me too, but my situation is slightly warmer (7 years in Dubai, 4 in London before that), however, the feeling of remoteness is the same. Love this song, makes me very homesick for NZ.
The Resound Otago Festival week gig, where they played again, albeit minus David Pine, was sublime. With the wife on Geetar and children on hor section....was a defining moment in life. People came from all over ( the world) to see them, The Clean, Chills, and others. I cannot wait to see the video captured at that gig.....There were enough Cameramen there. May have to upload my phone vid's!
Fantastic to hear this again. Video just looks naf but oh, what melody! Thanks for this. Great guys. Miss 'that period' of kiwi music. Saw them live numerous times.
ok, i clearly won't ever get enough of this song

@22ness0hayden As far as I can tell it's about being worried about commitment- leaving his friends and getting married.

I usually hate syncronized dancing in music videos but this just brought it to a whole new level.

One of the members of this band is the father of one of my class mates.. Think its the guitarist.

This beautiful track anticipates all sorts of great music, from Ride to the La's and beyond. Amazing!! Viva Dunedin!

Just dug through my old box of vinyl and got out my DUNEDIN EP. Hadn't listened to it for years as we have only recented acquired a turntable again.
So thanks again for uploading, made me remember the EP and listening to it brought back a lot of neat memories.

An absolute favourite of mine from the early 1980s! Hasn't dated at all.
Love the Dunedin shots, esp. the Otago Peninsula ones. Very under rated city Dunners!
