Looks like a GameBoy Advance knock off with an SNES cartridge. Or did this come out first? I've never even heard of this thing till recently while researching some old Digimon Games.
he's probably confused and actually had the Majesco 2000 re-released Game Gear. It's kind of funny that even in 2000 the Game Gear seemed to be a modern and relevant handheld. I don't know how people put up with Gameboys when a so obviously superior handheld was on the market. Sure people complain about battery life, but there were several battery packs for it, no different from a PSP in that regard (aside from more bulk).
i saw ur vid! and it reminded me of my wonderswan so i searched my room. sadly the battery leaked and had some corrosion. i spent some time cleaning it out and surprisingly, it turned on and now i'm playing it again. =)
Released in 2000 and discontinued in 2003. Considering not many people know about it because Nintendo, at the time, pretty much dominated the hand held video game market; I would consider it old.
One AA battery gives the player about 15 hours of game play (depending on the battery's manufacturer).
The only Final Fantasy games released on it was FF1, 2, and 4. They had plans to remake FF3, but they decided not to, and waited a long time before remaking it on the Nintendo DS. (They mainly didn't remake FF3 because of the storage capacity that was needed. The WonderSwan Color just didn't have enough of it. FF3 was a lot more sophisticated.)
The graphical capability of the Wonderswan Color (well, not in this video, but if you see screens of FFI for it, then you'll see ;) ) are amazing for when it was made, as it was competing with the GameBoy Color, which was 8-Bit but had a much larger colour pallet than the NES. The only thing that lets this system down is the awkwardness of the control set-up and the absence of a back-light...
@MadCowFilms The Gameboy Color was a rerelease of a handheld from 89. The original Wonderswan came out in like 99? 2000? I sure fucking hope it's slightly better as far as graphics go. Of course the Gameboy Advance came out a year after the Color so that point is completely moot. Could just as well talk about the virtues of a cd-i or Jaguar.
I was about to get one of those at a anime convention until I learned I had to line the solar system up to get perfect light. Though I have a NGPC and like it alot, the lack of backlighting is a turn off.
The wonderswan took only 1 battery?!?

Oh man...you're so lucky to have that! Sadly, I only caught onto handhelds with the GameGear onwards..What a little piece of history! :D

you make it sound like the GameGear came after the WonderSwan which is definitely not the case.

Hey there is this a swancrystal or a wonderswan colour?
Im really interested in Buying a wonderswan, mainly because it has a reputation of having alot of good RPG's released on it.
It is also now very cheap.
Do you knwo of any online forums or communities for the wonderswan? thanks, lozz.
lozzdude 4 years ago
This is a WonderSwan Colour. The case colour is 'Crystal Blue'.
I'm finding these days the WonderSwans are actually going up a bit in price because they are getting rarer on Ebay, etc.
PaulMdx 4 years ago
@lozzdude
Download an emulator and a game or two and try before you buy. You may even find you like the emulator better than the actual hand held.
