You could easily run out of adjectives to describe the total majesty of Darlene vocals versus Phil's mad Wall of Sound. Pure pop brilliance. Period !!!
The Christmas album was a huge endeavor. Phil had the singers and musicians in the stuido at Gold Star, for 16 hours a day the entire month of July 1963. The album originally tanked, as it was released the same day that JFK was assassinated (Nov 22, 1963). Sonny and Cher are among the backup singers on the "A Christmas Gift For You From Philles Records" album.
At least they use this in the UK as a trailer for Xmas programmes, but no one puts this in their best Xmas record lists. Bloody crazy, it's making me shiver again just listening to it. THE BEST XMAS SONG EVER!! Thumbs up if you agree......
This is a beautiful powerful Christmas song....and that sax....that's really something. This has all the beautiful ingredients of a really special Christmas song. This artist has such a beautiful professional voice which makes this Christmas song so special. Superb
Say what you will about Phil Spector, the guy certainly knew how to make records. Been listening to his productions for over 40 years...they never get stale or dated.
One of the best upbeat Christmas tunes ever! But here in the Chicago area it is completely overplayed on the radio. They start right after Halloween and by this time most people are totally sick of the music. I boycott those friggin' idiots. So it sounds so upbeat and great to me!
"I can't believe this. Are you stupid? Excuse me. Take it off. Take it off! Didn't I tell you not to get anything big or attract attention? One guy gets a Caddy and one gets a $20,000 mink!"
Love this song.....I will never figure out why it did not go to Number one. Phil Spector genius, Darlenes magnificent voice, wall of sound, it don't get better than this...........thank you thank you thank you
I heard on the Underground Garage on XM Radio last night that the song was originally written for Ronnie Specter to sing, but she couldn't give it the passion that it needed. So Ms. Love was offered the song, instead. Great decision! (Mariah Carey does a decent cover.)
One of the greatest voices of the 20th/21st century, in the pantheon with Ronnie, Aretha, Patti, Gladys, Whitney, Minnie, Maxayn, Shirley Ceasar, Chakha. Music was music-when you had to be able to sing, without artificial electronic enhancement. Long live Darlene Love!!!krxn11
@TahoeSouthShore Um.... because I can. There's no law that says I can't comment on how I feel about other singers' versions. I like them both, so what? No need to be rude.

I love both versions Mariah and Darlene but I'll always feel Christmas isn't complete unless I hear Mariah's with credit to the original if course, I just don't see the point in putting down either artist for their different interpretations for a song that everyone loves.

@mc1ate1mad1cow Are you sure you haven't confused the two ladies? Every deficiency you mention about DL I have found in MC. I always thought that Mariah was a one-trick pony who relied on her ability to hit a high note and was only mediocre with the rest of her singing. Whereas the DL version is the one that evokes an emotion in most people. But, that's what is fun about music - everyone has a different opinion and taste. Enjoy whichever version does it best for you.
@STBRetired1 The only reason I think people like mc1ate1mad1cow keep defending Mariah is that they don't actually care about the style of music. It all comes down to the fact that the music moguls are relying on Miss Carey's sex appeal on a Christmas album cover to sell their product, regardless how she actually sounds. Sorry, that doesn't fly with me. Looking attractive and trying to look sexified too me does not a great music cover artist make. Her cover of this song should be banned forever.
