I am planning on buying a Nook Color. Can the one that's on my local barns n noble be rooted? Because I heard the Nook Color with 1.2 can be rooted... Those above 1.2 won't...
Thumbs this up this is good stuff. To get free apps, go on google and put the app you want and after that put apk. exampple (download angry birds apk). put that and look for websites mediashare, megashare and filestube and you should be able to download apps.
despite the first link not working this was really helpful, I was able to root the nook color 1.2 ver and have installed the market which is limited to which apps show therefore as suggested I installed the amazon app but thats it every time I try to download a app it give me an error message and wont download the app are there any suggestions
@juliansvidal i figured it out...go intoROM manager...fix permissions! Jus click ok when it says something about sd card......im now running cm7 waaaaay better
just bought me one recently and it has the 1.2 upgrade so this tutorial could help , but i want to know if this is the non permanent rooting , as in everything is on the sd card and that once you take it out it goes back to the normal nook color setting ?
Very difficult for an old man to understand what you're saying and follow instructions that are given so quickly. "copy it in there" where? the SD card I presume. Is this procedure written down anywhere? Thanks for doing the video, I now know what I don't know ;-)

I couldn't get the amazon app store to download. Nookcolor is still blocking it. The file manager I downloaded from Android Market doesn't look the same as video. I get a list of folders. Any, PLEASE HELP !!!!!!!!
@juliansvdial I had the exact same problem and I gave up. I ultimately erased and deregistered my device. Did you ever find a solution? I would still really like to root my nook....
@GermannHood - I've had luck with some of the apps downloading, but most don't. I'm sittin' tight until someone puts out instructions to get rid of this problem.
@HeavyAmor10 - Getting into the Android Market does, but downloading most of the apps do not. It may be because I upgraded to 1.3 before finding this video. Now hopefully someone will put out instructions to fix this !
i tried downloading the 8gb clockwork and it downloads but it wont open up. Do you have another way? also i only have a 16gb card so can i use that on this root and download the 8gb on it?

Is it common not to get access to Amazon marketplace apps?I have tried various apps but it says my device is incompatible. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you in advance for your time.

I'm having problems putting the image file on my sd card. When I'm using win32 it will stop and end up "not responding". Any ideas? I'm running on a vista64 bit, but I'm not sure if that's the problem.
after i go through the whole process and finally reboot the system, after it says "read forever" it just stays on the n logo. i'm 100% positive i followed all the instructions. help please!
Can you do a video going over your system, I see Rocket dock (or stardock) and you have some version of a Mac Theme. But what are those windows on your desktop that seem to have a scroll built in, I've never seen them before. Thanks
I am in Canada and cannot use the Amazon apps strore, despite being able to shop there. The Android apps seem to limited. How can I access the full Android apps store
Tap the Back button if you have SoftKeys running, else swipe right to left on the status bar at the bottom of the screen (from the clock to the book icon).Scroll up to “Google Services Framework” and select it.Tap “Clear data”.
You don't have to install Amazon Marketplace. There is a fix: Manual Nooter 4.5.18 is now out. Start Nook Color Tools. Select the “All Settings” button. Unplug your NOOKcolor from computer.
Thank you so much for this video! It was a little hard to follow, but I slowed down and really paid close attention and I could follow it. I've been trying to root this thing all night with all these other methods-- but your video did the trick! Thanks again!
Hey nice vid but i got a question. I was able to do the clockwork but when i try to install the nooter on my nook color it says aborted. it wont install. Am i missing a step?
I am new to rooting. I am trying to root or unroot my nookcolor 1.2.0 on my mac. I can not seem to get either way to work. It will not format the data in rooting or unrooting. I really need some help with this. I am hoping that I am just missing a step because most instructions are for winddows and not a mac. Please help me fix this.
I have downloaded the 7zip and extracted clockwork file into 2 files which also extracted into 4 other files, but I dont know what .iso file you are talking about. what is the name of it and what do i do once I locate it?

I've successfully rooted my nook color but am still having problems downloading some games from amazon. For most of the games it says must be added to SD card. But even with SD card inserted I still cannot intall app.
you have a great tutorial here but you left out the most important step. THE FIRST TIME YOU INSERT YOUR MICROSD CARD INTO YOUR NOOK WITH MANUAL NOOTER ***MAKE A BACKUP*** this screwed me on my first nook i got a couple days ago because i didn't have a clean backup to go back too after i started playing around with custom ROMS, i completely bricked my nook 1.2! the only way to go back to a clean 1.2 is to go back to 1.1 and apply the update from barnes & noble which i could never get to work!
i tried every method to go back to 1.2 i could find on B&N forums, YouTube and the web, i spent two days on this and after loading what i suspect to be a bad ROM my nook would no longer turn on at all, i called B&N customer support and went thru their recovery steps which all failed. i ended up taking it back and getting another one. I guess my advice is to stick with this tutorial ONLY and to make a backup and keep it in a safe location on your pc or burn it to media..thanks for the tutorial :)
@Gazejosh, soon as you get into the recovery menu (where u flash the ROM and delete the cache and stuff), BEFORE you do ANYTHING! Choose backup in the menu and save it in a safe location on your computer after it's completed. any more questions please ask
make a backup when you get to the 4:45 point in this tutorial video, that's the recovery menu, transfer the completed backup to your PC then continue the rest of the tutorial.
Have a 4gb card as some others have mentioned and ran into the same "not enough space problem". Found another post that suggested this version of win32diskimager: win32diskimager-RELEASE-0.1-r15-win32.zip. It's in the links Zentath has above, but down a bit lower. Seemed to fix my problem.
Thank you for your video! Only have one problem, a few apps on the amazon app store wont install. Main problem, angry birds is one of these apps. I click install just like I do for any other app but it says app not installed. Any ideas?
i got it if u get not enough space dont download the new imager get the old 1 and then it will work just scroll down and get the 2009 version its the very last one but the first 1 cause theres two
for some reason when I try to write the files to the SD card it says that I don't have enough space. I double checked that I have the right file for the size of card I bought... still doesn't work.
ok I bought another SD card. Still a 4gb Sandisk micro SDHC. The only difference was that it didnt say on the package that it had software that helped move music and pics from computer to phone, etc. I wondered if that caused the disk to show something different? I also bought an $8.00 external card reader, because I thought I read on some thread that it would work better. I don't know but after reloading everything on my desktop pc and using the new reader and card, it downloaded fine!
@ram4law I'm having the same problem. 4 gig card, 4 gig file, says not enough space. When I verify in properties, my card is totally clean. What gives?
when i try to put the clockwork on my SD card it says not enough space! please help. What am I doing wrong? Using a 4 gb card with the 4gb clockwork file.
I rooted it just fine but I can't any off the applications that were installed to run. Android market, gmail, etc. When I click on the icons the screen just flashes and nothing happens. Can you please list the exact names (and links if possible) of the files that I need to download.
My nook keeps getting stuck at the "n" screen. I have tried pushing the power button and home button together a few times but that has not helped. What else can I do?
ok i am getting stuck on the image file. Where do you extract it to? It is hard to see what you are clicking on. When i open my f drive there is nothing in it.
@jkdapk hit the n button and use zeam launcher. then go to the apps page (the "button" on the left) look for "nook tools" then uncheck and re-check the box. that worked for me.
This video is very helpful, but I still can't get it to work. The problem I'm running into is that when I write the image files to my micro sd, I can't open the sd card in windows to edit the file names. If anyone has any ideas, I'd appreciate it. (I'm running 64 bit Windows 7 Home).
I've gotten pretty good at rooting 1.1.0, but I just bought a 1.2 today. This is absolutely the BEST Nook Color root I have ever seen. Your steps were clear and completely accurate. The expanded apps and tools are amazing.
I need your help my micro card will not except the version of clockwork every time i install it and try to go to the next level i cant read the card it is not showing up as a boot disk what is wrong/?????:"????????
Can you go into detail as to how to extract the Clockwork file? I keep screwing up this part of the process. Do you extract it first using zip? I came up with a .tar file. Do I burn this? Please help.
@OnceAGlenn You need a program like 7Zip (free, google it) to extract it. Inside you will find another file which needs to be extracted. Finally, there is the image file, which you need to burn to the SD card.
@Zentath After you insert your formatted SD card and download the nooter zip file, does the software take a long time to download on the Nook? I rebooted my Nook after the zip file download and now my screen is stuck on "LOADING." Is this normal? Thanks.
@icecrandor No. They come with curated apps from B&N's store. The selection is very limited, and despite the limited selection, many of the apps don't work properly on NC anyway.
you rock, you're my hero, this are by far the simplest instructions i found for rooting my nook, i was able to successfully root my lovely little nook without turning it into a $250 paperweight :)
Worked Like a champ, but I'm still at a complete loss on how to get a working ADB up so I can get my NC to tether to my phone. I've tried to follow several links with how to to no avail. The closest I got was when I got to a point that I had to install Java SE JDK, but the download site didn't have one for Windows XP. I tried the wireless ADB and thought if I uninstalled and reinstalled the wireless ADB it might fix the problem, but now I can't find it in the Market to download...help!
Hey, when I put the formatted SD card in the nook with all the files and booted the nook, it loaded all the nook folders and bypassed all the root files I had just put on the SD card. So nothing changed. Any ideas? It is a 1 gig that's had a lot of other stuff on it. Plus, it has already been in the nook before formatting. Would a new card do the trick?
Great tutorial. Was able to root my color nook running firmware 1.2. Thanks! However, I am not able to access my android market. When i tap the icon, it flashes a screen for less then a second and then goes right t the nook color home screen. I have been able to access the Amazon market as you suggested, but would like to get the "Market" to work as well. Do I need to register nook with a gmail account? How do I do that? I have tried hitting the robot image a boot. Thanks again.
Same problem for Android Market. Shows up but when I search for "Astro file manager" (for example), it does not come up. Before I used to just type "astro" and get the app and then download. I registered by Gmail account and all works fine.
WORKED PERFECTLY! I have been trying to root for 3 days! and your video is the only one that worked! took me 20 minutes thank you soooooooooooo much!!!!!!!!
@stizark I've successfully done rooted other android devices on a 16GB card with the 8GB link, it just screws up the formatting system on the card a bit, and the card will need to be completely wiped and reformatted on the computer, with SD card formatter:
Found a solution to the limited Android Market issues on the xda forums. Search for the "ManualNooter 4.5.6(For Stock 1.2)" post in the Nook Color Android Development forum on XDA and scroll down to where it says "Market has limited visibility". I tried using Amazon apps, but I still like market best.
@michellelharrington7 If you click the link and you've registered and logged in, it should just download the file. Alternatively, you can bypass the XDA link by downloading the same file from the fileserve link I provided.

I rooted it just fine but I can't any off the applications that were installed to run. Android market, gmail, etc. When I click on the icons the screen just flashes and nothing happens. Can you please list the exact names (and links if possible) of the files that I need to download.
Thanks

My nook keeps getting stuck at the "n" screen. I have tried pushing the power button and home button together a few times but that has not helped. What else can I do?

I am having an issue opening the clockwork file in the imager. The imager will only allow me to open .img or .jpeg files.

jkdapk 8 months ago
@jkdapk hit the n button and use zeam launcher. then go to the apps page (the "button" on the left) look for "nook tools" then uncheck and re-check the box. that worked for me.

@adamrtrout ignore me, im an idiot. Thanks for the vid!

This video is very helpful, but I still can't get it to work. The problem I'm running into is that when I write the image files to my micro sd, I can't open the sd card in windows to edit the file names. If anyone has any ideas, I'd appreciate it. (I'm running 64 bit Windows 7 Home).

Does this work on mac?

I've gotten pretty good at rooting 1.1.0, but I just bought a 1.2 today. This is absolutely the BEST Nook Color root I have ever seen. Your steps were clear and completely accurate. The expanded apps and tools are amazing.
Great work!!

Do you have to use the same formatted 8GB card after you are all done or can you use a new bigger SD card like a 32G?
bnsteffen 9 months ago
I get an error saying not enough space on disk when I try to write the image file even though my micro sd is empty with no files.
vizuet713 9 months ago
@vizuet713 If you're on a 64bit machine use version 1 of win32diskimager
bgladfelter 9 months ago
@vizuet713 Disk is probably the wrong size then. You may be using a file to big for the disk your trying to use.

instead of installing manual nooter, can I just install CM7 instead? Will I get the same result of Root+CM7?

Can you go into detail as to how to extract the Clockwork file? I keep screwing up this part of the process. Do you extract it first using zip? I came up with a .tar file. Do I burn this? Please help.
OnceAGlenn 9 months ago
@OnceAGlenn You need a program like 7Zip (free, google it) to extract it. Inside you will find another file which needs to be extracted. Finally, there is the image file, which you need to burn to the SD card.
Zentath 9 months ago
@Zentath After you insert your formatted SD card and download the nooter zip file, does the software take a long time to download on the Nook? I rebooted my Nook after the zip file download and now my screen is stuck on "LOADING." Is this normal? Thanks.
OnceAGlenn 9 months ago
@Zentath Doesn't the new nook colors come with android market?
icecrandor 6 months ago
@icecrandor No. They come with curated apps from B&N's store. The selection is very limited, and despite the limited selection, many of the apps don't work properly on NC anyway.

great instructions! I'm running this on Ubuntu 11.04. Any suggestions on a disk imager for this platform?

Any way to go to CM7 or Honeycomb or something and also is there any way to get Netflix to work on a rooted NC V1.2?
dtsmith77 9 months ago

I am on a Mac as well and the image will not burn to the sd I keep getting a message that I need to insert a disk.
Could you do a Mac version of these instructions?
tigerlillyva 9 months ago
Great tutorial. Was able to root my color nook running firmware 1.2. Thanks! However, I am not able to access my android market. When i tap the icon, it flashes a screen for less then a second and then goes right t the nook color home screen. I have been able to access the Amazon market as you suggested, but would like to get the "Market" to work as well. Do I need to register nook with a gmail account? How do I do that? I have tried hitting the robot image a boot. Thanks again.

@TheMinsk99
Same problem for Android Market. Shows up but when I search for "Astro file manager" (for example), it does not come up. Before I used to just type "astro" and get the app and then download. I registered by Gmail account and all works fine.

The first link does not download a file that can be extracted on my PC for the 8GB. Where can I get the file that I would need?
txmaricle 9 months ago
@txmaricle
Google "7zip"
Download and install it on your computer
It will allow you to extract the .gz file, and the .tar file within the .gz file (sorry, I know it's annoying).
Inside you will find the .iso file needed.

What if I have a 16 gb SD card? Which should I DL-- or should I get a smaller card?
stizark 9 months ago
@stizark I've successfully done rooted other android devices on a 16GB card with the 8GB link, it just screws up the formatting system on the card a bit, and the card will need to be completely wiped and reformatted on the computer, with SD card formatter:

why doesnt the 1st link work
can you give me a mirror or a direct download for a 4gb a sd card

Found a solution to the limited Android Market issues on the xda forums. Search for the "ManualNooter 4.5.6(For Stock 1.2)" post in the Nook Color Android Development forum on XDA and scroll down to where it says "Market has limited visibility". I tried using Amazon apps, but I still like market best.
1230mallen 9 months ago 2
@1230mallen You should supply a link to that page. Searched XDA and couldn't find what you pointed out.

Could you let me know how to do the SD card/imaging on a mac?
much, much appreciated!
christopherhousen 9 months ago
@michellelharrington7 If you click the link and you've registered and logged in, it should just download the file. Alternatively, you can bypass the XDA link by downloading the same file from the fileserve link I provided.

@michellelharrington7 Just rooted version of their 1.2 release, no cm7.
