  • It was one sick joke?? No it wasn't pet it was a drama, not comedy, DRAMA, there's quite a big difference. Bringing children into it?? Have you not watched The Exorcist or The Omen??

  • I recon most people were most annoyed by the fact they were fool and subsequently felt foolish

  • is just a joke omg is was funny my kids ,it shit my kids up good one BBC same me the bother i al way shit my kids up //the older now so i cant it was fun at the time

  • Somebody says that the audience couldn't tell whether the program was fact or fiction. Hello? Real ghosts? Were people in 1992 Britain that stupid?

  • i watched this when i was 11 with my dad & we loved it, it was made clear it was a drama but i was at that impressionable age that i started to think "is this real" as the show went on..... still i loved it & by the end -i was scared but in an entertaining way!

  • I will the people in charge of the BBC would look as puzzeled as that women when they are thinking

  • Mullet @ 7:37 LMFAO

    Now that's a hair do!!! :-)

  • The acting was so damn terrible

  • "vomitted in the hallway" brilliant. I was 12 when I saw this and was scared at the time. If I'd seen it as an adult I can't say I'd of been fooled. Also I have to say if you'd seen the first 3/4 but not the end, where it all goes over the top, I'd think it would be more scary. Watching it again now - it is genius TV.

  • Intelligent people felt duped! I love that line.

  • Pahahahahahaaha Mr Lenger is Borats dad

  • WTF??!! I was 12 at the time, scared the living shite outta me...but i luvd it,and 20 years on ive just watched it again,it was genius writing, genius programming and the writer if he/she is still alive should have more of their work if its lke this put into production...Fkin bra burning moaning tits the lot of em...Lets hope for a HD showing this halloween

  • I watched this episode when I was 9 and it scared me so much I wouldnt let my parents leave me upstairs for a year, but I don't go and complain about the programme, it's meant to be scary, you cant complain about a comedy for making you laugh too much, just like I cant complain about this for being too scared about it.

  • Holy fuck people! It was shown after 9.00 PM. It had a warning before and at the start of the broadcast about disturbing content and you're moaning that you were too scared or that your kids got scared. Here's a tip......If well written ghost programmes scare you DON'T WATCH THEM and if you let your kids watch something after the watershed you only have yourself to blame.

  • @BriansBannister - he said it made his son sick in the hall, i think it was the sight of his dad wearing bright red specks and having a dodgy pat sharpe mullet which made him sick

  • @anlaff He looks like peter kays Chorley FM DJ!

  • Butthurt

  • The argument against Ghostwatch is this "Waaaah Waaah Waaah I gots scareded by da nasty ghost film"

  • "Intelligent people felt duped" more like smart arses feeling stuiid because they got caught out. I watched it and the kids acting alone was enough to give it away. It didn't stop it being a cracking bit of entertainment for Halloween.

The phone line had a message saying it was fake and just wanted to know of experiances other people had of hauntings.Better than anything Most haunted have ever come up with.

  • Nothing is as scary as Martin Plumb's mullet hair and red glasses.............spine chilling.

  • @LudwigTricorn it's timmey mallet.

  • All of the complainants ought to be hunted down and strung up from trees around the country as a warning to others.

  • wait..... pregnant women went into labour? BEHOLD, THE POWER OF THE BBC.

  • Everybody who got fooled need to suck a bullet cuz they are some cum drunk punk ass retard faggot bitches.

  • OMG I did not know Chorley FM was going in 1992, he must have started coming in my eye's before my ears Check the dude at 7.40

  • 0:39 "Oh shit."

  • The bloke at 7:40 looks like a complete cunt.

  • The programme scared the living piss out of me when I was a nipper. I thought it was real and couldn't sleep for days. Well done the BBC! I do love a good ghost story. Stop being fairies and accept that you got fooled and were scared. So what!

  • Kids were scared,Pregnant Woman gave Birth,Intelligent people felt duped.Well,Id say the BBC had a success on its hands at the time.

  • i hit me wife with an onion at the time this was on

  • Some people will always like to pass the buck and blame others for their own stupidity or lack of judgement. The guy at the end who says that he thought the warning made by Parky was for dramatic effect is pretty dumb . It's a given I think that it's an indicator of what the content is going to be like. Sheesh!

  • I have just seen this on YouTube and it's fantastic, I love the BBC to do something like this again as I enjoyed it and even though it was scary. I appreciate anything that can scare me since it is very hard do.

  • Nor did I read the comment by bumperboy! lol

  • LOL, I hadn't read the comment by bensonrecon before I wrote that. LOL. But I agree with what he wrote!

  • Is that Borat at 04:58? I actually went to a party at a mate's the night it was on. I asked my parents to tape it for me, which they did. I was 15. I knew it wasn't for real - in advance, and so did my parents! They didn't read the Radio Times. They (and I) aren't total Liberal Democrat weirdos like the guy in the Timmy Mallet glasses at 08.00 mins! It was part of 'Screen One' - BBC drama showcase. Those grumbling at the time are the type who made Cowell and forced crap TV to be the norm!

  • It's the type of people moaning in this show that are responsible for us now having an endless stream of reality shows during primetime viewing rather than the cutting edge drama of the past. No wonder I spend more time online than watching TV nowadays

  • they wouldn't put that kind of story line on t.v in this day and age

  • That mum who is complaining that their kid was scared - of course a programme called GHOSTWATCH is going to be scary, drama, documentary or whatever it is! Why did she let him watch the show; she would surely be aware if he was a sensitive kidand likely to be freaked out.

  • I was 8 years old when I watched it and I LOVED it =)

    I still do.

Personal opinions are fine, but to say that there were NO warnings that it may be inapproriate for kids to watch and that it gave NO hints at being a drama are absurd.

    1. Its called 'Ghostwatch'

    2. In the beginning it has a 'written by' and it says Screen One

Whatever, point is, my mum allowed my brother (who was 10 at the time) and I to watch because we were used to watchin horrors. We enjoyed it.

    Thumbs Up GW team =)

  • These people are idiots! This was one of the best things the BBC did and i can still remember it to this day. Scared me to death as a child but was amazing to watch.

  • Can't tell if this is a spoof as well as Ghostwatchers with all the nonsense the audience is coming out with.

I did not like Ghostwatch myself, but I have to say that it was for entertainment purposes only and was aired after the water shed, so young children should NOT BE WATCHING IT! erm, being media smart comes to mind.

  • Borat is in the audience

  • This is why stupid people shouldn't be allowed to own a TV.

These are a people who have made british TV so shit that Essex girl who has a go in the next part seriously doesnt understand the concept of horror or drama, it should always revolve around the innocent and vulnerable. Why are these people blaming others for their lack of parenting skills incompetence and stupidity? If i fucked up this much with my kids I wouldnt go on tv and tell people about it and make out i was the innocent party.

  • I was 9 when I watched it. I didn't know it was a drama and it scared the living piss out of me!

  • Smart people felt duped....werent so smart were they?

  • I was 14 and watched it out of interest not knowing it was a play and it scared the jesus out of me.

  • Oh for god's sake, OH NOES MY CHILDREN WERE SCARED! why let them watch something called Ghostwatch?

  • Well I am amazed. A bunch of stupid parents in the audience letting their kids watch something well after the nine-o-clock water shed - then complain about it. Even to be bothered to get themselves on television only gives me the impression that they are just attention seekers.

  • oh come on...us 20 to 30 something years old here were the guys watching it and are now looking back on it as one of the best Halloween shows ever!

  • the very things these people are complaining about are what made Ghostwatch so insanely cool!! shit, some of us *enjoy* being scared! that's the point! I live in the States, so I never saw this on television - but I've known about it for years, it's a legendary TV event for fans of the supernatural .... and I just finished watching it on YouTube for the first time, and I must say : it was awesome!! I loved every second of it!! clearly it was acted, but the premise was exceedingly well executed

  • This was the start of the NANNY CULTURE!!! Wake up you idiots it was pure ENTERTAINMENT end of.

  • OMG....it's Borat @5min30!

  • These people with no sense of irony, humor or appreciation of art are scarier than any scary TV show/film.

  • "Intelligent people felt duped"...

That should probably have been "people that THINK they are intelligent felt duped".

  • I watched this 'live' and admit I was petrified (at 22 years old) but we also had the shop next door broken into (alarms going off in middle of late night deserted street-it was on a sat), a bottle of ketchup exploded all over my face and hit the glass front of fire (so I could hear hissing but see nothing) and the hob lid fell down with noone near it at all! BUT it was strangely fun too, not to complain about and children MOST definitely should have been in bed after 9 or watching summat else!

  • Hahahaha!! That audience just stepped off the special bus.

  • what a bunch of cockends.

  • IF THIS PROG HADNT HAVE BEEN AIRED WE WOULD NEVER HAVE HAD MOST HAUNTED LIVE,WHICH HAS BEEN RUNNING SINCE 1992,SADLY IT HAS FINISHED BUT WAS EXCELLENT ENTERTAINMENT

  • idiots lol dumb yanks.

  • Fucking idiots, never taking responsibility for themselves or their children, always looking to blame someone else.

Weak willed beings need to be purged.

  • LOL

  • Some people just can't take a joke

  • Fuckin LOL 5:00

    Its BORAT!!!!

  • @DanQuinnPlayersClub

    Exactly what I thought

  • Yeah I watched it, I was young, I was shit-scared, but so what? These guys are pussies.

  • wow, these people are square as fuck

  • i like the guy who says that parky's warnings were only included for dramatic effect - Well if you knew that why did you think the show was real you big plum

  • I was scared at 7.40 when I saw a fat tummy mallet.

  • The only fitting answer to this 'controversy' is given in the YouTube clip from 'A Bit Of Fry & Laurie' entitled 'Viewers Complain To Stephen Fry'. Check it out.

  • I watched this live. Back then there was no Special FX on TV so it was cutting edge and terrifying. It's easy to laugh now, but at the time I was shitting myself.

  • OMG! You can see Pipes in the audience at 5:51!

  • Woman at 5:30, "my son was scared", don't let him watch then. you stupid cunt

  • Also, does the host remind anyone else of a British Barbara Walters?

  • I had an immensely negative reaction to the movie 'Paranormal Activity', but that was only because that movie was shit. Absolute shit.

  • I was 6 when this aired and I loved every minute of it.

When I was a child I loved being scared which is why I watched things like Halloween, Nightmare On Elm Street etc.

It being on Halloween & after the watershed should have been a dead giveaway.

    Morons

  • So was early 90s Britain inhabited entirely by sketchshow characters? Seriously, the galoompus in the weird glasses looks just like Peter Kay's Chorley fm guy

  • Wow, these people are so stupid. I'm sure I would've shit myself had I watched it on the night but would've laughed about it once I knew it was a hoax. It was a fun programme all in all.

  • These people are utter morons. 'It was one sick joke. Why couldn't you have made a common criminal the thief, why did it have to be a child molester?'

Umm, it's horror. It's MEANT to be horrifying, idiots. This was a time when slasher movies such as Nightmare on Elm Street (which also features a child molester as the main villain, in case you've been living under a rock), so why the hell was this so upsetting? Arseholes, lighten up a little or don't let your children watch ghost programmes.

  • People forget the telly has an off button

  • these people need to lighten up.....anyone could tell it was a prank....especially when the camera room got trashed. Seriously people....were you born yesterday?....just a bunch of people pissed off b/c their kids ended up sleeping with them for the rest of the week...lol

  • The guy at 5:06 looks like Sacha Baron Cohen/Borat. Is this also a hoax? :P

  • I remember it being broadcast when I was 11, My mum and dad wouldn't let me watch it and i remember arguing that it was a fake so quite obviousy is was billed as such. Just watched it now, and at 28 I am reluctant to admit that they were right, fake or not I would have been bobbing it. It was pure geneus television...

  • It was very effective as a scary show. I started off thinking it was like Most Haunted, where it was a documentary show where they fake events to make it more exciting. It wasn't until towards the middle or end (It was waaaay too long) that I realized it was complete drama. And when the wind machines stsrt up, you can be certain. These people obviously weren't horror fans.

  • How comfy is your life that if someone were to ask you "what was the worst thing that happened to you in childhood?" your response would be: "I threw up after watching a tv program about ghosts." Life doesn't always have to be soo serious.

  • I guess the problem was that the show was way ahead of its time.

But how sad to see these members of the british public who would obviously prefer to see nothing new or inventive on TV at all. No doubt they would prefer wall to wall Last of the Summer Wine.

  • I remember watching this and being quite scared that i switched it off. This was a time waaay before the internet became mainstream, when children only really saw things that parents allowed them too. Todays kids would find the whole thing a laugh, but this was almost 20 years ago and seemed very real.. why wouldnt it be? it was the BBC, it was Live, no one had really done this before, why wouldnt you see a ghost?

  • @Alubobz exactly right. it was way ahead of its time. i think this makes blair witch 1 look laughably bad with even worse acting.

  • Comment removed

  • said what? An american?

  • I just saw this, and I'm fucking freaked out

  • This show terrified me when iw as little and saw it on t.v. the thing was it wasnt advertised as a spoof or a play just as a live show so yeh it scared the hell out of me. But if these idots KNOW its a show about ghosts like dont let your young kids watch it.

  • LMAO "my two young children were disturbed just by the presentation!" WTF!

middle england strikes again, more like middle friggin earth with the monotoned morons that complained and would still complain today..its called a fricken remote control..use it!

great piece of tv made controversial by closed minded self righteous idiots

  • The really scary thing here is that this was essentially the first time I recall the BBC, rather than politely telling the moaners to fuck off, backing off when controversy came their way.

Before Ross and Brand, the current nonsense over RATM's swearing on Five Live etc the fact that GHOSTWATCH was unavailable for so many years, imo, pretty much boils down to the Beeb getting Channel 4 like slams from members of the viewing public.

  • this scared the living daylights out of me when i watched it... i was like 8... and now thinking about it.. i LOVE it no matter what anyone says.. its these kinda stunts and pranks that make tv interesting.. bring it on :D

  • mullet! what are these idiots on? it was supposed to be scary, it was about ghosts!

  • Where the hell did they find these people? Its almost comical.

  • 4:59 BORAT!

I loved Ghost-watch, why was everyone so annoyed, it was a brilliant piece of television that should have been applauded instead of hated!

  • IT IS BORAT!!!

  • i would have spewed in the hallway if my dad was wearing thos glasses also.

  • look at these people bitchin!...i LOVE ghostwatch man!...anyway..s.pot on, 9 o clock , t.v changes everyone knows that...also, to get fear from people , the audiences gaurd needs to be down

  • u BUNCH of Toffs!!! i was only upset that it didnt turn out to be Real!!!

  • Surely this type of show is designed to identify and weed out the morons in society. Job done. That fat version of Timmy mallett at 7:50: DICKHEAD: THE WATERSHED IS THE WATERSHED. Shouldn´t have blamed the BBC for bad perenting

  • If only the Beeb still did things like Ghost watch! I was 11 when I saw it and didn't sleep for ages. Friggin genius, love it.

  • you complete idiots. iwatched it today in my english lesson, and iwas shaking like a leaf , iwaas terrified iwas hiding behind my coat , half of it icould believe but other half ireally couldnt? but tbh ithought it was a really good horror/drama. forgod sakes its a twelve , people know that and its there to create tention it is the whole point it is ment to be scary..

  • If these peope are so damn thick that they believe that Michael Parkinson became posessed by the spirit of a cross-dressing child molester live on BBC1, then they deserve everything they get. Its because of idiots like these that we will never see the like of Ghostwatch on TV again.

  • I agree with the comment below. Ghostwatch was on the front cover at the Radio Times at the time as well. Well done BBC for exposing morons

  • These people are morons, look at that guy with red glass, what a tool. And tht women why did u bring children into it, it wasnt funny, of course not it was meant to scare you thick twat, why would it be funny, why would u let ur children watch this, it was trying to be realistic, but people are stupid it said written by in the opening credits and in the reviews it said starring instead of presented. People are idiots and these people just wanted to moan about something, why dont they grow up.

  • omg, it's after the 9pm watershed so these stupid people shouldn't of let their children watch it. I wouldn't of let my kids watch it if I had them at that point. So they should stop blaming the people who were just doing their job for their bad parenting ¬¬

  • Boraaaaaat!

  • HA HA i was gona point out BORAT too!

  • 4:59 Borat lol

  • Damn I was just about to post the same thing!

  • I remember watching Ghostwatch when I was 11 and I thought it was real and LOVED IT! A great piece of drama. These people probably want a good moan.

  • omg its a ghost story, kids are meant to get scared

  • They set a precedent in broadcasting, that's for sure.

  • They went to far. . .

  • "Children were terrified, pregnant women went into labor, and intelligent people felt they had been duped."

ROFL. Way to go, intelligent people!

  • Lol they Obvs were not as intelligant as first thought

  • haha, I hope the British have grown a pair since 1992.

  • What bothers me about these people in the audience is how they are, of course, allowed to have their opinions, but they always seem to made to overshadow the producer's answers. The producers were the actual people creating it, they know why they did certain things in a certain way. These people can not tell thém that they did things on purpose. The audience people are rubbish, hope they're still having nightmares >:(

  • The audience should be put down.

  • RUTH BUMGARDEN?

  • Treegarden, actually.

  • Clearly these people didn't notice the subtle sub themes of this show, which all things considered, really WERE scary.

Abandonment, divorce, sexual assault and mistrust of authority --- all much more scary than ghosts.

  • stupid woman who complains her kid cried like a big sissy because there was a sinister presenting style???.......die old bag....die!!!!

  • Oh these people are pathetic!

Ghostwatch was clearly too smart for these idiots!

  • The guy at 4:59 - BORAT!

  • NAICE!

  • Every member of this audience needs to grow up.

  • Yes I agree with a couple of comments on this page the acting in this show was so horrible only the mentally defective could possibly be convinced of it being real. Also if something is about the supernatural and on at 9 30 PM then that should tell a parent that it's not really for very little children or those easily scared, surely?

  • It was a good piece of TV in its day - what are these people on about??

  • lol ghostwatch scared me to death when i was 10

  • you can tell that one woman who worked on it is so pissed off about all the people, with good reason, these people are retarded. they know the rules, be responsible parents...

  • its embarassing that all these people are making all this fuss over it lol

dont let your little kids watch scary things then haha

they want scary they got it

  • Just from the bit shown on this video, I could tell that the show was faked. That "Royal Shakespearean" tones of the mother's voice was a dead giveaway that this was not cinema verite. The screams of the kids sounded rehearsed, the camera shots looked pre-planned and the general affect was "stagy" and rather drolly tongue-in-cheek>

  • FUNNY???? Christ, it scared the crap outta me...I was only 8. I was calling out for the bloody Ghostbusters! Plus it made me feel real sick after eating most of my sweets from trick and treating :) I believed it was all real but Ghostwatch was pure gold. Looking back now, I can tell it's obviously fake...but this was way better than some of the shit we have on tv now...Bring Ghostwatch back!!

  • "it wasn't even funny"

IT'S "GHOSTWATCH" YOU CAN TELL FROM THE TITLE ALONE IT'S NOT GOING TO BE FUNNY!

these people must honestly be bad parents for letting their kids watch the show past the watershed! And there were warnings about it being disturbing, seriously people!

I mean sure, I find the show scary, even though i know it's fake, but I prepared myself for something horrific the second i heard the warnings, I didn't just assume "oh it's just for the drama!"

  • Haha. A brilliant piece of drama, but honestly if you thought it was real you should be ashamed to admit it.

  • I'M ASHAMED sausagedogmcgee!! :-)

  • It was brilliant TV, i never forgot it as it scared the shit out of me and my brothers and sisters for weeks! I even knew it wasnt live as a while before sarah greene and the film crew used our school pitch to park the equiptment and sarah came into our assembley to tell us about it! Thats why we watched it but it still petrified us like nothing else before or after.

It was brilliant though, as anyone who seen it 17 years ago hasnt forgotten it and it is still been talked about.

  • whats that girl on about "it wasnt even funny"....IT WASNT MEANT TO BE FUCKING FUNNY!!! lol

I was 9 when i watched it and i scared the living shit out of me and left me scared of my curtains for a very long time.....it was brilliant TV!!

These people need to get a life!!

  • I'm with you tidykris, and I totally get the whole curtains nightmare!! I'm one of those people who loves watching scary stuff at the time, but then as soon as I'm on my own I turn into Rain Man! The Exorcism Of Emily Rose left me scared of going in my own hallway for YEARS!! Still am a bit!! Sad or what!!

  • There IS such a thing as a water-shed in real life, it's called "bed-time". Allowing your young children to watch this is irresponsible parenting.

Also, who classes themself as "an intelligent adult" and believe this was real? It was a great entertainment show and if you can't take a joke then you simply aren't intelligent.

  • I like to think I'm quite intelligent, Colinwebb12, but I SHAT myself mate! LOL!! Still gives me the heeby jeebies watching it now!! Eeek! I agree with you about the watershed/bedtime thing. It's not up the TV companies to monitor what children watch, that's the job of parents. It's in the job description!

  • haha, well I was half right then! I think it's people trying to blame the bbc for being gullible but unable to take a joke.

  • You probably didn't believe it was real. It was scary, but clearly fake.

  • That was the shameful thing about it - I thought it was totally real!! Even though I know it's not now and watching it back it looks totally staged - it's still REALLY horrible! LOL!

  • frightened the crap out of me at the time. I look back on it and smile!

  • I was a young child when I watched this on Halloween night in 1992.

My parents had gone out for the evening. I tuned into the programme about 2 minutes after it had started, so I missed the warning that it was a drama screenplay.

But I knew within a few minutes of looking at Ghostwatch that it was fiction. BUT IT WAS STILL SCARY!

    * It was a brilliant programme! *

I'm glad I saw it 'live' at the time. It was a excellent spook by the BBC. I can't believe how gullible some people are.

  • It's interesting to see what sorts of silly people get upset by stuff like this.

As a kid this stuff would have scared me crazy even without anything happening... so really they've got no one to blame but themselves for letting their kids watch it.

  • "Pregnant Women had gone into Labour?" LOL Hows that a Bad Thing? It can't stay in there forever can it?

  • I always thought that this was a great program at the time, tho i could still tell that it wasnt real by the sometimes bad acting on it

  • it was shit scary at the time

  • bloody hell it is borat!! lol..check the dad with the timmy mallet glasses, talk about should have gone to spec savers lol.i loved ghost watch!i was 16 at the time and it scared the crap outa me...what is with all the people who complained about it.thier real gripe is that they were made to look foolish.get a sense of humour about yourself,if you cant laugh at yourself who can you laugh at!..i remember sarah greene on going live telling us all to watch it too.

  • Can't blame the BBC

parents let their kids see this

  • 5:06 Is that Borat?!

  • I was about to post the same comment lol!

  • Ghostwatch was hands down one of the greatest pieces of television I have ever seen and certainly one of the most interesting concepts that the BBC has ever come up with. It amazes me how many people were truly fooled by this clever spoof, yes I was fooled and terrified by it on that halloween night back in 1992 but I have a very good excuse, I was 9 years old! Conversely, the amount of people it apparently did fool only goes to show how cleverly directed and written the whole production was.

  • love

  • Anyone who made such a big deal out of this programme like these people is a fucking idiot. Ghostwatch scared the shit out of me. I was only 15 at the time it first shown and at the start I thought it was real but the blatant acting soon killed that idea. It was ace though. Sadly there are so many morons around that just have to ruin it for the rest of us. At the end of the day it was meant to be scary. It was Halloween after all. Idiots!!!

  • But at the time people thought it was real.Think about it this was done in 1992 and nothing like this was done at the time.

  • Not everyone thought it was real. It's not the BBC's fault that people can't tell what's real and what is fake. Even if I saw this in 1992, I would have figured out that it was a fake documentary.

  • Wow that show was genius, these people are the biggest sucks ever. Why don't they just suck it up and admit they were a bunch of idiots for thinking it was real. They did a great job by fooling all these idiots.

  • I mean listen to them, covering up their stupidity for being duped by coming out with all sorts of reasons, like denying the fact that Michael Parkinson HAD warned them. Yes the storyline with the ghost being a child molester and involving kids was disturbing but I say again, it was past the watershed, they WERE warned, and hey, the amount of gory & scary movies that come out today don't get half as much complaints if any, you wouldn't let your kids watch Hostel for instance, would you?!

  • Might do.... LOL!

  • suckers?, im still shitting a brick!

  • Thousands of people believe in ghosts?

    Fucking idiots.

  • Sorry had to post this---check out 7.44 wowie! cool cat! nice hair and glasses

  • haha borat i noticed that! this programme really was ahead of its time
