to put an end to the conquistador helmet debate: Conquistadores wore helmets called "Morion" which at their time (16th centuries and continuing) were the most sturdy battle helmets ever produced as they were bulletproof (meaning an arquebus projectile wouldnt penetrate them) and started to push the, most commonly worn, heaume or pot shaped helmet worn most commonly in central europe off market, yet the helmet worn by Hefdan is no morion as the typical form can not be found in the design
@ChuckNorrisIsNothing the helmet found its way to hefdan most probably like MarymonckiJohn described, but after all the armour worn by bulwyf is almost impossible to put into context, as if even there was such an armour at that time it wouldve been won by a really big fight, because if you could afford such a thing you could afford men to fight for you and i mean lots and lots of men. after all there had been raides, but the norsemen only had a few really big battles
@ChuckNorrisIsNothing they were born seamen and marauders but they lacked the discipline to form large steadfast armies as all they wanted to do is to raid, and even if bulwyf was such a great commander ( to come back to my original point) he should have lead more men than shown in the beginning of the movie because any man with a ship and a crew could call himself a king or emperor at least and if you gathered a big army it had to stay with you otherwise your leadership
@ChuckNorrisIsNothing ment skills were too poor to lead anything but a bunch of guys who took arrows to their knees, to put it into a nutshell: you had to be Chuck f**king Norris if you ever were to get such an armour at that time, and BOY can't i write when im drunk ;)
@ChuckNorrisIsNothing and the swords they use arent claymores theyre called "Spahtas" and were germanic swords most common these days(even the roman army used them later on) longsswords as such were not yet "invented" (most swords were models of a so called "Saxe" an one side sharped blade or its longer version the "Longsaxe"
some vikings was dressing up in bear cover to get the power of a bear. berserkir (bärsärkar) was a type of warrior and means "bear shirt" ore "only the shirt, the did't use anything else then pants shirt and a sward. the fought till the died ore the enemy died. they where the wildest and most "looked upon" warriors among the northern men. it's nice too se how they have mixt fantasy and reality:)
I read the best Viking story in a book about Norse Myths and Sagas. A young Viking warrior gets captured by an enemy and taken back to his farm, where he is put in a cage. The enemy goes out and while he's gone the Viking manages to escape from his cell. He finds a stash of gold in his enemy's house, steals it and makes his escape. As he makes his way home he feels ashamed, like a cheap coward so, he goes back, kills his enemy and leaves with the gold and a clear conscience.
@ofwotansblood It was an old storybook about the great Icelandic hero Egil Skallagrimsson, one of the ideal Viking figures, that belonged to my grandfather. Don't know if it'll still be in print but there's quite a lot of literature about Egil avilable.
@LondonPride25 chapter 46 of Egils saga Skalla-Grímssonar illustrates this distinction. While raiding a coastal farm, Egill and his men were captured by the farmer and his family, who bound all of the raiders. In the night that followed, Egill was able to slip his bonds. He and his men grabbed their captors' treasure and headed back to the ship. But along the way, Egill shamefully realized he was acting like a thief, saying, "This journey is terrible and hardly suitable for a warrior.
We have stolen the farmer’s money without his knowledge. We should never allow such shame to befall us." So, Egill returned to his captors' house, set it ablaze, and killed the occupants as they tried to escape the fire. He then returned to the ship with the treasure, this time as a hero. Because he had fought and won the battle, he could justly claim the booty.
Vikings had a habit of wearing looted pieces of armor and using finely crafted weapons of their enemies, so as to display their exploits of battle to their adversaries.
It was like: Hey, look. I have already killed and looted several opponents. Looking for trouble?
for vikings...their armor is not very accurate...the realism behind them is mere peasant clothing leather armor perhaps and fur coats...sometimes a sea raider helmut...
@MiracleKD18 they often took trophies from the people they raided, most often in the form of weapons and armor. it was added to show how well traveled this particular band was. you'll notice in the beginning one was wearing a roman gladiator's helmet as well.
@666ghosttiger666 Showing how well travelled they are is all well and good but I think time travel is a little beyond them. It;s prety much the one pkace this film falls down in portraying the dark age Norse
well ... don really like antonio banderas... but only for this time.. i decided to spend money in going to se tihs movie.. i like it cause it has little bit of history ...haha
"Duzy" means in Polish, and maybe in couple of other sclavian languages "big". Sounded like "Hey Biggy" to me. Maybe that's little refferance to the fact that Viking homelands were subject to frequent raids by Sclavian pirates (whose main base, for over two centuries was the Wolin island)

lool,at 1,20 the arab whie horse was walkin side ways haha, arabic orses are the fastest in the world. n this part is fucked up the went in as if the know the place
I notice that many argue over the historical validity of the armor. One must remember that yes, standard dress was a long belted tunic over pants, but that Vikings were travelers and collected goods from all over their known world. It would not be unusual to see a band like this with such a mish-mash of armor.
Um was that first rider wearing conquistador armor? Just wondering the helmet caught my eye and I know Vikings went all over the place plundering and what not but could they have ran into Spaniard explorers?
They could if they had traveled in time some 400 years.. But similar kind of helmets (shaped to resemble antic roman/greek) had been used by Frankish heavy cavalry of the Karoling era. It is doubtful this particular group of vikings would have such helmet (considering that the story is set in 922 not, for example 822) but still, they were known of wearing good armor, and as travelers, with veterans of Varagian Guard among them, they could have various equipment
well, spanish conquistadors were not from this time period, this same helmet was wore by english armies, french and hungarian, but it still possible, that the did traded with spanish, there was a historical battle in iberia, midern day spain, between romans spaniards, and germanic tribes, vikings were a germanic tribe...
Buliwyf's armor is kinda He-Man, or 14th/15th century, take your pick. The weapons are pretty accurate tho. As for the helmets, the horned ones were purely ceremonial.
you're right, those horned helmets weren't worn by any viking... and historicaly, bulwyf's armor is impossible at that time.. there was no such thing as iron/steel platemail :D and if it did, you'd need lands in south france or be an Italian banker to buy it ;P since it could cost it's weight in gold (and a pound of gold could keep a man fed/clothed for years :)) vikings warlords wore those helmet with eye sockets, chainmail and axes/longswords :) not these claymores they use here, good film tho
