What I tend to do when it's high numbers, I take the closest number to a factor of 10,

lets say here 85 x 98, just like in your exemple, 98 is the closest to 100.

So 85 x 100 which equals 8500,

then you multiply 85 x 2 = 170 (Because you made 98 2 times bigger than it actually was before)

Take 8500 - 170 = 8330 and voila! It's just a trick for fast mental calculation.

stop wasting your time on multiplications, you'll never need to do that in your career

instead, try to make your method more sound by proving it with mathematical induction, or try to improve your skills on knowledge your WILL need, like integration or derivatives.

Awesome dude, dont worry about all these people being retarded about it, this is a cool thing and if they payed attention they would know that for the 9 extra minutes you were just explaining how it worked and this trick once practiced only takes a few seconds as opposed to a few minutes to do it the traditional way in your head...great stuff really intersting!!

hmm, personally i would have just done 85x100 then took away 170. Which leaves 8330, it also leaves me time to make a drink whilst you do it your way.

@LokizarroX Actually, I use youtube to reaffirm what I have learned in class, in fact it has helped me to study for tests etc, and in the long run remember the topic better. Repetition is key to math :)
