I don't support PETA anymore, for various reasons. I think they do more harm than good and there are plenty of other great organizations to look to and support legitimate efforts.
This is so disgusting. If there's one thing I can't stand it's animal testing. People wouldn't test on their children, so why would they test on animals?
I do feel that we should adopt animals more. I think we should make aware and fund more animal shelters. I mean, a small town that has even 1,000 people. If every person donates a dollar a month to an animal shelter, thats $1,000 dollars a month. Do you realize how much that would help?
the only time I find this acceptable is when animals that are euthanized are given/bought by universities for biology/physiology/veterinarian dissection. The animals were going to be euthanized by the shelter for being there too long anyway :/ at least this way, something can come of their death. Students can learn, maybe become veterinarians and help animals thanks to what they learned.

People who say no to things like drug testing on animals are idiots. If you take a medication or vitamins, I promise it was tested on an animal to make sure that you wouldn't die. People can claim that a rat or dog is different from a human, but the truth is that most of the hormones and proteins in other mammals is barely any different from those found in human beings, and labs are more ethical that any other place due to regulation. I've worked in a lab and it is not cruel.

1. Animals react differently to many meds then humans do. Look up thalydimide.
2. There are way more humane ways to test products. Science has come a long way. They don't have to use animals to test on!

Does anyone know if these experiments had a purpose? Usually, universites have to provide thorough evidence (of overall benefits outweighing risks) to IRBs and IACUCs to even get permission for such experiments. It breaks my heart that this is happening to animals and my gut reaction is to try to stop this type of cruelty...but as a scientist myself, I want to know both sides of the issue. Can anyone give me more information?

Most animal shelters, like those around this area, have a screening process of potential buyers (new owners) of a pet from their shelter. Often times, a new buyer is rejected if the shelter does not see fit that the animal is going to a good place. Suprised that the university is getting these animals.

"I tried to get Lady off" means they were trying to get the dog off the study and adopted out. They couldn't because "she already had implants". The U adopts out dogs (cats too) that either were rejected for study or were involved in studies that did not require the animals involved to be euthanized at the end. All the dogs (who get walked outside btw) and cats taken from shelters were on the shelter death row. My own dog is adopted from the U. I notice PETA, er, failed to mention these things.

At the very best some will be trained, depending on how old they are, to help people with disabilities. Some will go to other programs where they will not be subject to abuse. But the reality is that if they're slightly older, they'll probably remain unadopted and die in a shelter anyway.
I'm all for animal rights and to alleviate cruelty towards animals, but I would really like to know what exactly the university was testing. This is relevant. As much as I value animal life, I value human life much more.

I have a question I'm asking as part of a survey/experiment:
Suppose you have two beings before you: a dog whom you have raised and loved for all its life, and a little girl you have never met before. Suppose, hypothetically, that a man holds you at gunpoint and tells you to choose which one of the two he is to kill, and that if you don't choose either one, he will simply kill you, the girl and the dog. Which choice would you make?
This is not antimal cruelty. This is shameful propaganda and misleading. Universities follow stringent ethics guidelines which are often reviewed by a panel of academics.
By testing on these animals under academic research, it helps develop science and medicine. What if the cure to YOUR pet's disease was discovered via such techniques? If you truly are against all this kind of research, then you should reject all modern medicine - somewhere in history, someone or some animal died for it...

You all can bitch and moan about the university doing tests on these animals all day, but in the long run what was the point in the animal being put to death for nothing instead of helping with advancements in health care. The world isn't all puppies and kittens people, those animals were going to die one way or another, it might as well be for the greater good. And btw, if you or someone you know has ever had a transplant that saved their life, that was first tested on animals.

2. There are way more humane ways to test products. Science has come a long way. They don't have to use animals to test on!

Does anyone know if these experiments had a purpose? Usually, universites have to provide thorough evidence (of overall benefits outweighing risks) to IRBs and IACUCs to even get permission for such experiments. It breaks my heart that this is happening to animals and my gut reaction is to try to stop this type of cruelty...but as a scientist myself, I want to know both sides of the issue. Can anyone give me more information?

Most animal shelters, like those around this area, have a screening process of potential buyers (new owners) of a pet from their shelter. Often times, a new buyer is rejected if the shelter does not see fit that the animal is going to a good place. Suprised that the university is getting these animals.

"I tried to get Lady off" means they were trying to get the dog off the study and adopted out. They couldn't because "she already had implants". The U adopts out dogs (cats too) that either were rejected for study or were involved in studies that did not require the animals involved to be euthanized at the end. All the dogs (who get walked outside btw) and cats taken from shelters were on the shelter death row. My own dog is adopted from the U. I notice PETA, er, failed to mention these things.

@Bromopar This is something to consider before buying a pet. It shouldn't be an impulse buy the likes of buying a toy. Caring after animals should be a commitment for the pet's lifetime. It's not up to PETA
At the very best some will be trained, depending on how old they are, to help people with disabilities. Some will go to other programs where they will not be subject to abuse. But the reality is that if they're slightly older, they'll probably remain unadopted and die in a shelter anyway.

I do feel bad for these animals, but for us to advance the experiments need to be done. How else are we supposed to find cures for diseases? I will probably get a lot of hate for this but...it is the way it is. Cures need to be safe for humans and so it needs to be tested in animals first. i love my 4 dogs. they are a big part of my life. be realistic people...yes i know its horrible that animals have to be tested on, however if they weren't purchased to be tested on, they would be euthanized anyway. if it is a university, all of their testing is strictly watched and documented to be the least cruel as possible. if you want someone to be mad at find the video of the psycho girl slinging puppies into a lake, don't take it out on people finding cures for horrible diseases.

This is not antimal cruelty. This is shameful propaganda and misleading. Universities follow stringent ethics guidelines which are often reviewed by a panel of academics.
By testing on these animals under academic research, it helps develop science and medicine. What if the cure to YOUR pet's disease was discovered via such techniques? If you truly are against all this kind of research, then you should reject all modern medicine - somewhere in history, someone or some animal died for it...

The problem is not with the experimentation of animals, but with the lack of academic preparation for these experiments which causes torture and unfair conditions on the living animals.
The killing of the animals is not the issues because that is what the shelters would do after enough time. Though it is sad that there is enough of a problem that we even need these shelters.
Animals need birth control too. Don't let needless litters happened.
