I used to listen to this song all the time when I was in college in the mid 1970s. I screwed in a blue light bulb and put a towel across the bottom of the door to block out the light from the dormitory hallway and went into the zone.
How did we allow ourselves to get turned around. Everyone real was welcome. No plastic people. Find a spot and drop. Don't sit on that joint pass it over. Here is some hashish and Strawberry Hill. Is that Orange Sunshine! Use to go to Maryland for Strawberry Hill had not made it to Virginia
Every College Town in the country use to jam and party every friday and saturday nite. Music from the dorm, head-shops, apts, garages, individual food shops, etc. I was a kid but the vibe is seared into my memory. Kids were so much Cooler then. Creativity Abound! Thanks to my older cousin for taking my under his wing. Turning me on to fine chicks at a young age: )
I believe this is a later version. That is definitely not Steve Winwood singing.
Little Stevie Winwood had moved on to collaborations with Clapton by the time this was filmed. BTW, Steve wrote this. As well as the biggest hit The Spencer Davis Group ever had (at the age of 15), what a talent. You can talk about the Stones, Beatles, Who or whomever you want. Eric Clapton has sated again and again that Steve Winwood was the best musician he ever played with.
@Mrsehall57 Are you sure about that? Then that long-haired guy in the video is the best Stevie Winwood impersonator in the world; hard to get both vocals and piano that good unless it's Stevie himself.
@Mrsehall57 That most definitely IS Steve Winwood. The collabaration with Clapton (Blind Faith) lasted a year. Traffic reformed in 1970 with Winwood in the line-up until they split up again in 1975 :-)
@Mrsehall57 - you know nothing. If you think this isn't Steve Winwood, you've never seen him or heard him. I think you got all that information from reading it somewhere and you think to come on all knowledgeable. Idiot.
Groups today wouldn't have the guts to even say "low spark of high heeled boys". I luv it. The BEAT. I luv it. The posts, readin all these posts. It's connecting with kindred spirits you never met or maybe/probably did. I saw Yes in New Orleans. The talent that was performing in the 60's & 70's...blows me away. No accountin' for taste, but I really can't understand why music that's disparaging to females, violent, prideful and (on a really blow out day) consists of 3 chords, is appealing.
Me too, I was mesmerized by all early traffic, blind faith, I'm bored to tears by most new music, except bluegrass, irish, cuban, or african. These guys were true innovators, I am as blown away today at age 51 as when I was 16 years old listening to it for the first time. Dave Mason was equally incredible with some of his songs
Winwood is awesome !! The group is so tight live, you would think it was a studio mix-down and mastered ! I got to see them in West Palm Beach, I think I might still have the stubs !
looks around and sees all the cool peeps and say you all speak truth to me soul!! i love my co existers with a hearty happy new years and many many more you people, imma about smashed right now but guess what?? all is well in westport mass, and i look so forward to a big 2012 my bros and sis's may the god of all creation take you to his heart and hold you ever closer than ever!! thatz my 1 wish for 2012, just a closer walk with thee, this i ask oh lord i plee, a closer walk with thee let it be!
Boone's Farm, Gypsy Rose, Tears of Christ, Jamaican, Hawaiian and musicians and music that changed the world forever. The soundtrack of my life is so much richer because of all the concerts I went to, all the records I listened to...how sweet it was. If I close my eyes and take a toke, I can be right back there.
I just read the autobiography "Clapton" by Eric Clapton and the songs of this era were my songs. So I had to come back and revist them.. great book if someone wants to read it! He speaks of Steve Winwood (Stevie to me and you) ;) alot and of course George Harrison.
never knew a live clip of this song ever existed! Thank you SO much for putting this up for us. 70's awesomeness!! This ladies & gentlemen was a BAND. This is when music was music and a concert was an event. No flash & dazzle, no autotune, no stupid outfits or pointless dancers. You paid your 7 bucks, snuck in your beers and cheap-ass Boone's Farm strawberry wine and had the time of your life with your friends creating the soundtrack to your life. :)
@garylibra You took the words right out of my mouth! When this 1st started playing I was like, "I've never heard this song, must be wrong one", used to album version so had never heard the longer intro. Love the African djembe & congas in this, elements I really never noticed originally, pop out at me now, like the horns. I hadn't heard this is sooooo long & used to be one of my faves, so thanks for uploading the full live version especially.
@garylibra Really excellent words, garylibra. Today there is no more "music" like there was back then. Today it is homogenized, plasticized, and packaged for mass consumption. When I think of the contribution of a guy like Steve Winwood, it boggles the mind how much he did. The Spencer Davis Group, Traffic, Blind Faith, his solo work, it's incredible how he was able to keep recreating himself for a brand new era, pumping out hit after hit. Those days are gone. Today it's just junk.
OMG, you have described the 1970's just the way they were. OMG, those were the days! I lived in Southern Calif. at that time. I remember Calif. Jam. Thank you for reminding me of great memories I have of those days.
Ahhhh. Senior year high school. Damn. Those were really great times. This album was on a regular rotation if I recall correctly. Winwood's voice is smooth as silk.
As you're watching this you realize that you can barely hear Reebop on the congas. I read somewhere that the rest of the band asked him not to come to the next gig on the tour(essentially, "letting him go"). For some reason he came anyway, maybe by turning down his microphone, they achieved their goal...! Nice to have The Muscle Shoals Rythm Section on hand. David Hood on bass and Roger Hawkins on drums, it gave Steve Winwood & Roger Capaldi room to stretch out. Chris Wood plays some nice stuff.
"If you had just a minute to breathe and they granted you one final wish ,would you ask for something like aother chance?" Since 1973 I heard this.....
