@2edsajdmsa ...just think ...in 19 years Hossein will be more careful with his travel plans! ...and now he'll have a few new things to blog about too. I'm just glad this didn't cost Canada too much ...would rather see Canada help someone who needs it rather than some blogger who insults a country with a 2000 year old legal system -& then actually goes to the country!! see it's not that bad - he'll be out in 2029 - it'll be here before he knows it!!
@bpuhal he went there on his own free will, so because he was in that country he deserves to die?
And Canada couldn't extradite him you fool, because Iran didn't have a warrant or anything out on him. They just arrested him when he was there because they don't like anyone saying bad things about them.
Do some research before you choose to be an insulting douchebag
@2edsajdmsa seriously? I was being sarcastic. My point was, he went there on his own & knew the country's mentality. Also, IRAN wont let him serve the whole sentence anyway, he'll be out sooner than you think ..in the meantime he gets to make some new friends, read & workout.
@bpuhal Iran's jails are filled with humans rights abuse claims. We're talking forced labor and torture. Stop claiming this is no big deal, your nonchalantness on this subject reveals your brutal ignorance about his situation.
Iran is a cool country and i'm sure people don't get executed or given long jail sentences for nothing. And what was he doing in israel anyway?I don't know too many iranian traveling there but this did so people shouldn't be surprised and ever beleive anything on western radio or tv.It's not a reliable source to get all the details and true information.
@certifiedcritic especially a Canadian Government owned television channel. Shame on our government to ask itself to help a part-time citizen who is obviously guilty of something.
@certifiedcritic Uh.. obviously their government is fucked in the head just like every other. At least in North America people don't get sentenced to death for telling the truth.
You people are very interesting. The comments seem to range from facism to socialism. I'm not gonna take a stance but just about everybody who posted a comment is wrong AND right to some degree. Sufice it to say rules need to be followed untill the point where following the rules will only do harm. Peoples opinion and voices should not be condemned, only their actions.
@CAZekany unfortunately as much as i love my country and love my people all i can say is that iran is a beautiful country ran by the wrong people and what they are doing and getting punished for is against humanity
Just for some perspective; The Japanese government would do the exact same thing as the Iranian. They don't recognize dual citizenship either. They are holding many foreign nationals from China and Korea and elsewhere probably some Canadians. They also comply with extradition orders from the US to hand over Americans seeking asylum in Japan even when they have defected to other countries. This is just the early drums of war. Frankly I am extremely disappointed in George and The Hour.
SERIOUSLY!! Why the heck did he go there? "Hossein Derakhshan, the Canadian-Iranian blogger, has been sentenced to almost 20 years in a notorious Tehran prison for acts of cyber-dissidence he committed from Toronto."
@0lympia2008 Salman Rushdie wrote about Iran and had to leave the country forever. Everyone in the world knows what will happen to Salman if he tries to go back IRAN. Why is it different for Hossein? Why do we have to clean up his mess? How many other Candians (& I mean Canadians born here unlike Hassan) are being held in other countries for similar charges? Why is this guy so special?
It's easy to say why "did he go there?"... we don't know how he feels about personal stuff - maybe visiting his family back home? The might be enclosed in their country with no permission to leave to another country... what can the Canadian government do? I know that many people have been imprisoned in Iran for just a drop of a hat... Sarah Shroud was released but her 2 other hiking mates and still jailed among others..
@CheekyMonkey888 why is it our responsibility? Why does Canada think the rest of the world has the same values as us? Why do we have to interfere with their laws? The guy went to Iran knowing full well what could happen, like going for a parachute jump and knowing in the back of your mind your chute may not open.
maybe strombopoulas can put on a uniform and go fight iran for his friend who owns a canadian passport of convenience... everytime there's a foreign incident, there is a canadian passport at the heart of it all...
It's too bad that so many people don't understand freedom of speech. There are a LOT of things people say that make me upset, but I wouldn't have them killed for it. It's easy for me to assume that the old saying, "sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me," is a shared sentiment throughout most of the civilized world. I'm always amazed when I see things like this still happening in our world. It seems so cowardly for a government to keep a law like this in practice.
@faething Francis, I agree with you, but I am also thinking you must not be keeping an eye on Fox News, et al, where various guests have called for people's deaths. A most notorious example was Pat Robertson calling for Hugo Chavez to be killed. How is the US taking out the leaders of Guatemala (look up Jacobo Arbenz on third world traveller); Chile (Salvador Allende), etc., support for the contras, much different? I think it is worse. I used to have Christ's statement about taking the log
@givebirthathome out of your own eye, before telling your brother he has a dust speck in his, on my channel.
You should also note that this is a bit of media sensationalism. He hasn't been *sentenced* to death. He is threatened with it. I wish the Iranians would stop this kind of repression, but with the constant terrorism they are subjected to, and the US authorizing (see Seymour Hersh) $400 million dollars to overthrow the regime, they are somewhat justifiably paranoid.
@karadan100 Yeah, I know - 2 very people from Iran are my working colleagues, they left Iran about 12 years ago... and ever since they left Islam as well!! Atheism rules!!
@CrackerJackLee Tho MISON is incorrect with atheism rules, atheism is far from facism, history has showed that religious people (the extreme right anyway) are far more like tyrants towards other people
i can tell you point blank that religion and atheism are both facist tyrant groups... atheism is just another fucking religion... wake up! you're writing in your sleep... think twice before you comment on someone's comment... you assume like a little girl... and you don't deserve my attention... i've forgotten more than you ever knew... go back to your intellectual pablum...
@CrackerJackLee Alright?, I can understand that you believe in that strongly. I was trying to be respectful in this open discussion but after seeing your attitude in your response its clear that your a trolling douchebag sir.
Right!! I agree we should not blame all Muslims for one radical country, or more honestly 23 other Arabs countries that do just the same but not showing an outrage when ONE country = Islamic republic execute people for freespeech, and for getting raped and then get the death sentence by stoning for being raped... oh yeah, right on let's nit blame them!! (sarcasm)
Bottom line is he's an adult who knew what he was doing. He knew the consequences and continued anyway. Why should we help him for putting himself in a hole?
@owen402005 So what if someone you didn't recognise as having any authority said that you should be put to death for the words you just wrote?
Either you're the sort of person who'd blindly obey and withdraw your statement, or you're the kind of person who'd stand up for your rights to highlight human rights abuses.
Well clearly he didn't have the right hence why it's illegal. If he broke the law he should be punished accordingly. Who came up with this nonsense of "human rights"? Probably some arrogant left-wing visionary who thinks he knows the best way to run the world. Of course I would obey the laws of the land and if I didn't like them I wouldn't go there simple as that. Stop being a bunch of complainers.
@owen402005 You didn't answer my question. Rather, you sidestepped the issue an spouted pointless right-wing rhetoric.
It leads me to believe you are the blindly obeying type. The sort of peon who enables dictators to dictate through sheer weight of mindless numbers.
Bravo to you, for you are unable to think for yourself!
Oh, you need to read up on the history of the human rights act btw. It is incredibly interesting. Don't reduce to stereotype that which you know nothing about.
Typical left wing response trying to make my comment seem illogical. It's not my fault you didn't understand it.
You asked me which type of person I am. A person who obeys the law or a person who stands up for human rights. Clearly my response indicated that I would obey the law. However you made a point of wording it carefully to make it seem like blind obedience when actually it's rational obedience.
There was no real need for this man to say anything at all but he still did
@owen402005 There's a big difference in democratic law and totalitarian law. You've muddled both, and therefore have no semblence of empathy for anyone being marked for death by simply 'saying something'.
Ignorance can only lead to the things you've said. learn some humanitarian politics for fucks sake.
I don't see a difference between the two. The rule of law is the rule of law if you disobey it then you suffer the consequences plain and simple that's how it goes everywhere. As for me being ignorant, you have that wrong as well. I'm sure you probably have the media definition of the word and not the actual definition. If you did you would realise this man was either ignorant of the law or felt he was above it which means arrogance. Every left-winger can't be a revolutionist!
@owen402005 with that reasoning you would have made a perfect guard at the Nazi death camps......probably would have been the guy rushing forward to volunteer to throw the gas canisters into the shower rooms, and then danced with glee as they convulsed and vomited as they died .....you my friend have some SERIOUS personality disorders and in all likely hood are a Sociopath...
@owen402005 ok, so you celebrate death to anyone who says something a government doesn't like. And you denied you weren't a mindless peon... Hmm.
Besides, this guy made those comments whilst OUT OF IRAN. Therefore, their 'law' has no meaning and his sentence is unlawful. Not only by the standards of humanitarian rights, but also by any practical rule of law.
You really have no idea what you are debating about, do you?
I don't celebrate death. My whole point is that he knew! He knew what he was doing was illegal and he knew what would happen if he got caught. Cultures are different all over the world and we have no right to change them because it's none of out business what happens in other countries. Why should he be above it all? What makes him so special?
You obey the rules of the people who run the place that's just common sense and it goes for any situation!
@owen402005 You're right, he knows exactly what he was risking when he went back to Iran in 2008 (he blogged from Israel against Iran, a big no -no). But now he gets Canada to spends thousands of dollars to defend him & he gets all the profits when he writes his book later. This is one man who may die, but no Strombo when thousands of Pakistanis are going lazy tubing on their rooftops and dying hundreds by the day. Save the guy who was on the show 2 yrs ago or whole families? wow!
@owen402005 Actually, it is a lot of our business as to what happens in other countries. If we continuously turn a blind eye, then people like Hitler get into positions of power. The world is a lot smaller these days, and stuff like this has to go challenged by free and conscientious nations. That's why i said there's a difference between democratic law and totalitarian law. One considers the people and the other doesn't give a fuck.
The world as we know it was formed by people who "didn't give a fuck" do you think if the British and French "gave a fuck" about the Indians(oops not politically correct) Canada would even exist today? Everything that happens is based on viewpoints and just because you don't agree with some that doesn't mean they are bad or wrong they just are. You need to stop worrying about things that don't affect you. I'll say it again it's none of your business.
@owen402005 You are comparing two completely different worlds mate. Colonial times were not in an era of globalisation so that comparison cannot work in the slightest. Even population differences make that assumption moot. We're a global community whether we like it or not and the first steps towards any kind of equality around the world is to stamp out fundamentalism in all its forms. That means educating backward theocracy's that killing people for saying words is not acceptible.
I think it's more wrong for foreigners to decide how things should be done in other countries. It's arrogance. Political correctness is the new face of fascism whether you like it or not and you're taking part in it by supporting the globalization of specific ideas.
It's not up to you or any other self-righteous fool to decide what Iran(or any other country) does with the criminals they apprehend within their own boarders.
it's not backwards just because some people say it is!
@owen402005 Oh and by the way, democratic law goes by the majority vote because the PEOPLE vote a particular government in. 75% of Iranian people want a free market and democratic law.
Currently, any dissenters are killed. I don't understand how you can support this, especially as you live in Canada - a free and prosperous nation with some very forward-thinking rules. I'm from the UK and i can say stoically, that our system of government is far better than that of Iran, in every way possible.
@owen402005 Let me point out to you that apartheid in South Africa, slavery and segregation in the united state and even the holocaust were all based on the law of the land.
Name me a country with a theocracy in the majority that has free speech! Someone here said - why did he go there? Well, the person that said that -- doesn't know what journalism is... good luck !!
Remember the story that Iran was about to force its 25,000 strong Jewish community to wear yellow stars? Started in Canada, turned out to be nonsense.
No doubt this host means well, but why don't we "need to get active" about the US putting $400 million into "de-stabilizing" Iran?
I noticed in checking into this story, that Irwin Cotler at the National Post is still pushing the war propaganda that Iran is in violation of the NPT. Cf. Flynt Leverett.
@givebirthathome from his parents... his brother is particularly active to get the canadians aware of hossein's situation... plus there are iranian news papers that have talked about his trials and so on
free speech? in Canada/US/European Union but not Iran. That is why you DO NOT cross the Iranian border... unless you want to be tortured/raped/killed by the Basij.
...Why would he return to Iran if he knew that he faced reprimand for his visit to Israel? Or his blog? Understandably what is happening is terrible, but I cannot help but wonder why he would put himself in that situation?
@wiciltd Because he's a man with a cause, and he's obviously not afraid of the consequences he may have to face in order to get his message out. I commend him for having the guts to do it, and hope he somehow comes back safe.
Oh my gosh, you cannot judge the entire Muslim population of the Earth because of this! Prejudice such as this is what propagates such hatred and misunderstanding! Be tolerate, be smart and be CAREFUL!
Sadly, I constantly see people saying that we need to give Islamic communities in Canada their freedom to practice their religious trend, but do they give freedom to their own people to fit into the rest of the world?
@WheelchairAccessible sorry but if you must know the government is RULED my the Islamic republic, that obviously says, it's it ruled by Allah and that anyone that has a mind of his own gets killed, this is precisely that he was talking about on his blog!!! He was referring that religion should be separated from the government which is not in Iran for many years... anyway if you want to flag me, it will only prove my point absolutely right!!
@zabuma really? KILL anyone that contradicts Islam - kill all cartoonists that makes fun of Islam? Stone AShtani - have you heard of her? Have you heard of honor killings? Kill all infidels? Kill all Jews? Kill anyone that stand up to the Islamic republic? Kill Sunni, kill Shia? Wife beating, kill your daughter if she does marry the old rich man in the village? too many killings all over Islamic countries... read the Koran, I have....
Bahahahahahahaha, if you've read it, then you'd know that all those things that you're saying are totally wrong. Claiming to have done something OVER THE INTERNET doesn't mean that you have :P I challenge you to get your facts straight :)
The fact that your comment got so many thumbs up just goes to show that people need to be more educated about the difference between CULTURAL and RELIGIOUS practices. Not to mention at least a minimum general knowledge of other world religions.
@Daridawn The only reason I responded to your comment on my comment is to at least try to help people understand things in a better light. Ignorance is a powerful enemy.

By the way, what country do you live in?
karadan100 1 year ago
@karadan100
I live in Canada.
owen402005 1 year ago
@owen402005 You're right, he knows exactly what he was risking when he went back to Iran in 2008 (he blogged from Israel against Iran, a big no -no). But now he gets Canada to spends thousands of dollars to defend him & he gets all the profits when he writes his book later. This is one man who may die, but no Strombo when thousands of Pakistanis are going lazy tubing on their rooftops and dying hundreds by the day. Save the guy who was on the show 2 yrs ago or whole families? wow!
bpuhal 1 year ago
@owen402005 Actually, it is a lot of our business as to what happens in other countries. If we continuously turn a blind eye, then people like Hitler get into positions of power. The world is a lot smaller these days, and stuff like this has to go challenged by free and conscientious nations. That's why i said there's a difference between democratic law and totalitarian law. One considers the people and the other doesn't give a fuck.
karadan100 1 year ago
@karadan100
I'll say it again it's none of your business.
owen402005 1 year ago
@owen402005 You are comparing two completely different worlds mate. Colonial times were not in an era of globalisation so that comparison cannot work in the slightest. Even population differences make that assumption moot. We're a global community whether we like it or not and the first steps towards any kind of equality around the world is to stamp out fundamentalism in all its forms. That means educating backward theocracy's that killing people for saying words is not acceptible.
karadan100 1 year ago
@karadan100
I think it's more wrong for foreigners to decide how things should be done in other countries. It's arrogance. Political correctness is the new face of fascism whether you like it or not and you're taking part in it by supporting the globalization of specific ideas.
It's not up to you or any other self-righteous fool to decide what Iran(or any other country) does with the criminals they apprehend within their own boarders.
it's not backwards just because some people say it is!

planetx9009 1 year ago

"Today there's word.."? From whom?
Remember the story that Iran was about to force its 25,000 strong Jewish community to wear yellow stars? Started in Canada, turned out to be nonsense.
No doubt this host means well, but why don't we "need to get active" about the US putting $400 million into "de-stabilizing" Iran?
I noticed in checking into this story, that Irwin Cotler at the National Post is still pushing the war propaganda that Iran is in violation of the NPT. Cf. Flynt Leverett.

@givebirthathome from his parents... his brother is particularly active to get the canadians aware of hossein's situation... plus there are iranian news papers that have talked about his trials and so on
bansterTHEganster 1 year ago
free speech? in Canada/US/European Union but not Iran. That is why you DO NOT cross the Iranian border... unless you want to be tortured/raped/killed by the Basij.

Freedom of Speech is one thing but being caught in the system is entirely another! May you glide on eggshells my friend!

...Why would he return to Iran if he knew that he faced reprimand for his visit to Israel? Or his blog? Understandably what is happening is terrible, but I cannot help but wonder why he would put himself in that situation?

@wiciltd Because he's a man with a cause, and he's obviously not afraid of the consequences he may have to face in order to get his message out. I commend him for having the guts to do it, and hope he somehow comes back safe.

Sadly, I constantly see people saying that we need to give Islamic communities in Canada their freedom to practice their religious trend, but do they give freedom to their own people to fit into the rest of the world?

@Daridawn Uhm... how is Islamic connected to extremists goverments? tell me that.

@Daridawn
Not to mention at least a minimum general knowledge of other world religions.
zabuma 1 year ago
@Daridawn The only reason I responded to your comment on my comment is to at least try to help people understand things in a better light. Ignorance is a powerful enemy.
Have a nice day! :)
