LOL - I've heard of those - LOL OMG i'm so Old. This car is awesome sir. It sounds beautiful - very nice, i am jealouse beyond measure. That 3 speed makes me miss My 1967 Dodge A100 Cargo Van - it didn't sound Like your yours - being slant 6 225, but she was golden. :O)
Nothing about the brakes on the 1961 Plymouths is/are easy . . . no self adjustors (two cam bolts per wheel), brake/hub puller required just to get at the rear brakes, and the worst of the worst: with power brakes (the wagon doesn't have power brakes but my Belvedere does), there's no way to check or fill the master cylinder without tearing down the booster (a real brilliant piece of engineering!). Still love 'em anyhow!
@Toxicg00 I hear ya. I bought an absolutely "showroom condition" 1962 Chrysler Newportrt in 1976..it was beautiful. The Chrysler designers must have been on acid when they came up with this car. Constant electrical problems, non-self adjusting brakes, "NO "PARK" FUNCTION" in the automatic transmission; all you had was the "neutral" button and a very faulty parking brake on the drive shaft, the car "rolled away on me" a few times until I smartened up and bought a metal wedge to block the wheels
I had a 61 Plymouth Wagon in 1987. Paid $225 for it. It had a 225 slant six in it. Ended up giving it to a church to help them out. Also had a 63 Dodge Dart with the 225, and dash push button shift. Also have a 65 C/10 Chevy Stepside LWB, that is sitting in Ark. in a friends field, waiting for me to come and get it. It had 3 on the tree, but had a Granny4 put in it and a 235 instead of the 230 it came with.
@jet79637 LOL...yeah, 3 on the tree.....I am old enough to remember when 3-on-the-tree was very common.......my dad had that set-up on his 1955 plymouth
I remember that a custodian in my elementary school had one,(A wagon) Only it was the 2 door Suburban model...same color...I thought it was cool then(the 70's)&would be even cooler now!!
Beautiful front end and dash, but Virgil Exner was right, these cars needed desperately to have the giant fins his cars were famous for.
Exner once remarked that the average mans mind was too conservative and stodgy to accept or understand the need for fins, but nevertheless the need was great and these cars look like plucked chickens.
I have always liked the '61 Plymouth. I'd still like to have one of them. There is a white Fury 2 dr. HT with a Ram Induction 413 running around the eastern panhandle of West Virginia where I live. It is nice. I'm glad yours still has the column shift. A lot of young people have never seen those.
thats a nice job on that car. i have a 61' sport suburban that im rebuilding right now.i just got it to turn over after sitting in a junk yard in fairbanks alaska. if you have and sugestions or tips let me know bc im gona need a lot of help trying to rebuild it.
I had a 4dr sedan (Savoy). Same year, color and engine(318 poly) I loved your video. I really liked the ending. I wasn't sure if I was ever going to see that beautiful dashboard again! The speedometer is great! And the dash mounted rearview. Exner was a genius.
Mine had the pushbutton transmission. I also had skirts. I sold it for $400...like a chump. I will own another full size 1961 Plymouth.
That is an awesome car! The front end design makes it look absolutely massive, and that cool speedometer design is very advanced. It's cool too that you kept the column shifter instead of going to a floor shifter.
Love the thermometer style speedo and is that a 3 on the tree
