Ian is attempting to write a new book, but is struggling making it more fun to the average reader versus a standard textbook. Randi is trying to tell him, he is writing about his book knowledge (text books) and needs to write about what they have seen and expereinced since she became a werewolf. I hope that helps, if not let me know. I have the episode at home, and I can rewatch it for more clairty if needed.
