  • nice =D, je ne lache pas. thank you :)

  • Like your videos and am learning a lot. I live in the Dominican Republic. Would this work here? Or would the comb. sun and moisture damage the plant? Brenda, Las Terrenas, Dom. Rep.

  • @brendavandenbosch ... Tomatoes need moisture and this puts it right into the root zone, not on the foliage so I really don’t see you having any problems with it……Donald

  • @webcajun Thank you. Am gonna try it. B

  • Very interesting and simple design. Enjoy your videos. :)

To keep bugs out, why not just put a cap on the end. Pull it off to fill and replace the cap after filling.

Won't that keep the bugs out?

  • @DaSchultzes … A cap would keep the bugs out but it would take a lot longer to water. I keep a couple of extra tubes on the cart when watering, if I find one stopped up I replace it…….Donald

  • @webcajun

I 'am going to make some of those his year but I think I will use a cap with some window screen on it so it want enter fear with the the waterflow.where about are you ? my mom is from Ville Platte Louisiana

  • @steve194962 ... Not that far from Ville Platte in Avoyelles Parish........Donald

  • great tips and good video.

  • @dayspeace ... Thanks........Donald

  • Will that answerd the Question I had ask you earlyer.I like that.thanks for tha tip

  • Thanks for the great irrigation tip, so simple, I'll try it. I watch many of your helpful videos, I appreciate your teaching style. Greetings from So. California coast.

  • @lapedro310 ...Give it a try and let us know how it works for you.......Donald

  • Hi Donald, how often do you fill the tubes with water and is that the only method of watering for the tomatoes you use? Thanks! PS- I absolutely love your videos! I've learned so much and you've got a great way of explaining things. Keep it up!

  • @alexvmusic ... That really depends on the weather, your soil, how long since the last rain, the heat and drying conditions etc. If in a dry spell, every 1-2 days…..Donald

  • Thanks for sharing your wisdom

  • @N1na44 ... Hope the videos help and you're welcome........Donald

  • Donald--I made the watering tubes like yours. Started with the 1/64 drill bit--then went to a little larger bit. Zip tied them to my cages..But the biggest problem I've had is the hole gets stopped up, and have had to take most of the 22 tubes out several times and flush the tubes out. Done away with the zip ties and just just 1/4 rope to hold them in place. Otherwise not a bad system Enjoy your video's !

  • @kingitis2u ... Bugs love to crawl inside the tubes for the water and can be a problem at certain times of the year. I've thought of making screens for the top but decided it was just too time consuming. I carry extra tubes on the cart and replace any that get stopped up. Depending on the time of year they'll usually go 2 maybe 3 weeks before I have to clean them out........Donald

  • why do you seedling the pot when planting

  • @haleytased ... Sorry but I don't understand your question......Donald

  • hey boss thanks for the great tips this system also worked on my pepuhs

  • @fuckiraq12 ... Glad it's working out for you.......Donald

  • Question wont the water get burning hot in that pipe in the heat of the summer and burn the base of your plant ? or does it drain that fast if so then it's not drip system

  • @swivelgate ...Never said it was a drip system. No problems with the water heating up, drains in less than 10 minutes.....Donald

  • Just have to say WOW....Why didn't I think of that?!?! Ideal price point, Cuts back on the water waste and all the fertilizers go directly to the plant!! Thanks again and keep posting these great videos!!

  • @jasonbourneops ... They do work really well......Donald

  • you do all that planting by yourself???

  • Man I really enjoy your videos. You are awesome.

  • lâche pas! :)

  • @babar9721 ...That's right, don't give up......Donald

  • Love all of your Videos thanks so much!

  • @cruzinhappy ...You're welcome........Donald

  • well first the non organic fertilizer's are really bad for you they can cause health problems such as cancer and other problems there are to many to list i wish i could list them all but i have limited space. you can have a wonderful garden like you do now and with just using organic fertilizer's and compost are really great they help the soil that your planting in have a better chance and when you use organic your helping the earth to and your self so your not harming your body either

  • great tip thank you so much that is so easy so i heard your using miracle grow but are u using the organic kind? it would be a lot better for you

  • @MrReefguy ...Could you explain the difference between regular N, P, K and organic N, P, K. always wondered?.......Donald

  • @webcajun if you have any more? all be glade to answer them for anytime.

  • great tip. I like it much better than the soda bottle trick.

  • @swanz199 ...I'm using them for other vegetables and to water newly planted trees....Donald

  • I love your videos!! very interesting and important for me as starter in this vegetable gardening...

  • @FilGirl77 ...Glad they help....Donald

  • have you tried using a drip tape irrigation system

  • @mdcrab68 ...One day I may try it on a small scale.....Donald

  • I love your videos!, Very relevant to the way I garden, I have found them all very helpful! Thanks!

  • @soldierguard ...Glad you enjoy.....Donald

  • Hi Donald would a 1/16 bit be good enough as home depot did not have 1/64 bit thanks alot.

  • @ROCKGY1 ...How about a small brad nail? It'll drill through PVC......Donald

  • @webcajun Thanks Donald for the quick reply I did one pvc with a 1/16 bit I have 24 more to do ill pick up a small brad nail. Thanks for your kindness.

  • That's a great idea for areas of the country like where I live. In Oklahoma, we have many days between rain in the summer. It's not unusual to see water rationing implemented. This system allows handwatering where you need it without wasting it.

  • @hammondjam57 ...I'm using it with a few other vegetables as well.....Donald

  • Awesome! Thanks for this great way to water! Going to give it a try.

  • @LawnsAreDumb ...I think you'll like it......Donald

  • Now that's one cool system. I'm gonna give it a try. Thanx!

  • @dianne2061 ...Starting to use it on other things too, works real well......Donald

  • hello, question wouldnt that be too much water for the tomatoes

  • @kev2556 ...Not really, when we have a dry spell I'll sometimes fill the tubes twice or put 2 tubes per plant......Donald

  • Donald, you have GREAT videos!! Thanks for sharing such great info! :)

  • @tacheekwa ...Glad you enjoy and you're welcome.......Donald

  • gotta ask you a question. HOw do you get your mater plants to become so big as seedlings. if i wasnt mistakin you looked like your plantin a small tree. Great video though!

  • @dejavuwrx ...If you want really big transplants start them earlier and let em grow. I'm guessing that one was 10+ weeks old.......Donald

  • wat kinda of cage is that for ur tomatoes just wondering is it somthing u made

  • @2010bowhunter ...Some of the best stuff I've found is concrete reinforcement wire. At 5 ft. tall it's a lot better than the shorter fencing I've been using. Cut the pieces at 6 ft. attach the ends and you're good to go......Donald

  • Donald, Love this video, great idea, i supose it will work with peppers and eggplants (on a slightly smaller scale) as well. I also liked the video on your upgraded tomato cages, very informative and just what i was lookin for. I am envious on your garden size, keep up the good work and keep the vids coming. thanks Mark

  • @MrGardenman101 ...Hey Mark, I use the watering tubes mostly on tomatoes but it would surely work with peppers and eggplant too. It could also work when planting a small tree. Glad you enjoy to vids.....Donald

  • Does anyone know how often water should be added with this system? Are we talking every day regardless of the heat? I am kind of new to this so thannks for any info.

    Thx

  • @amp2345 ...The weather has a lot to do with how often. Keep the soil moist and you'll be ok. On average I'll fill mine 2-3 times a week. If it's real dry maybe every other day. You can always put 2 tubes to the plant.....Donald

  • looks like a great system and I'm going to try it this year. One thing I'm going to add is maybe a small flat rock angled towards the plant.for the stream of water to hit so it doesn't "drill" a hole into the ground and it'll spread the water around the plant more. This year I'm doing 6 types of tomatoes and might go with a 6th if I can find the right early bearing ones.

  • @khiewolf ...I really hadn't had a problem with the stream, just point it to the side of the plant and you'll be ok.....Donald

  • I was wouderinf if i could put the ashes out of the fireplace arround my tomatoes to stop blossom rot

  • @MrBillyray42 ...Question is how much is enough or too much? Would it change the PH? I don't do it.....Donald

  • @MrBillyray42 Blossom end rot can be caused by a lack of calcium. If the soil drys out too much it can lock up the calcium so it isn't available to the plant, so try to keep the soil moist. Crushed up egg shells in the soil can also help give toms what they need, has worked for me without any problems so far. Good luck.

  • Very nice, I cain't wait for spring to come so that I can plant some tomatoes using your irrigation system.

  • @ilivensoca ...I think you are really going to like this method. If it's a dry spell you may want to put 2 tubes per plant or fill em twice.....Donald

  • do u have any problems with trash or bugs getting in the pipe and clog the hole?

  • @carrottop8311987 ... yes, they have to be cleaned about every 3- 4 weeks. I carry some extra on the "Unit" and exchange the ones I find clogged.......Donald

  • I will use that method this summer on my farm in Akansas along with rain water collection. Thank you Donald. By the way the fence post tied to the tomato fence is also a good idea to keep them stable. We would'nt want our toms to rest on the ground.

  • @tazerwazerman ... let me know how well it works out for you.......Donald

  • i love that startup on this one! by far my favorite startup.

  • Many, many thanks, keep the videos coming, they are really appreciated. Robb

  • what a great idea!! i had an idea similar...i took a 10 ft pvc pipe and put 1/64" holes in it and connected it to my hose and it worked like a little sprinkeler!! by the way your videos are AWESOME!! Your Fellow Gardener, Jake

  • @goarmyboy97 ... Hey Jake, the PVC does work great for both watering and fertilizing. Glad you enjoy the vids.........Donald

  • Hey Donald! is it right that ou cant plant tomatoes in the same soil year after year?(i have a little kicthengarden) Cheers from Norway=)

  • @MRTHATSFAKEANDGAY ... I don't believe that's the best practice. I rotate my crops every year.........Donald

  • @webcajun How often do you have to fill the tube? I mean how moist does the soil need to be around the tomato plant? Thank you, by the way, I just discovered you on You Tube and you have me hooked.

  • @67robb ... if in a real dry spell I would water every 1-2 days........Donald

  • OK..I'm hooked. I have had a small garden for about 20 years, and am looking into expanding next year to produce a bigger variety of vegies. While tilling in a bunch of compost this past weekend, my 2 labs relaxed and watched dad work for about 9 hours. Gotta love the labs!! I'm sure I'll be watching many more of you videos.

    Thanks!!

    Dean

  • @deano686kx ... Hey Dean, lots of folks say growing a garden is a great way to relax and relieve stress. I agree 100%. Sitting and watching it grow, with a cold diet drink, isn’t bad either. I’ve owned labs since the 70s and just love those dogs. Good luck with the garden.........Donald

  • hey did you have to slay any draogns for that accent

  • @koviack ... what accent? LOL.........Donald

  • great design

  • @lifearoundhome ... real simple to make.......Donald

  • Awesome trick and most definitely helpful. Thanks again Donald!

  • @potboy321 ... you'll find all sorts of uses for them........Donald

  • Hey im just curious how often should i water my tomatoes, obviously more often on very hot days but should i normally water every other day and about how much water should i use..I only grow pretty big tomatoes never cherry;s Would appreciate a bit of advice thanx..

  • Hey im just curious how often should i water my tomatoes, obviously more often on very hot days but should i normally water every other day and about how much water should i use..I only grow pretty big tomatoes never cherry;s Would appreciate a bit of advice thanx..

  • Reply from earlier:Cucumber in cages never new that.Do I make the cages the same as the cages in your video on tomato cages?Thank's a bunch!!!!

  • @lkerley2006 ... for both the tomatoes and cucumbers I would make my cages out of wire that's at least 5 ft. tall. This year my tomato plants grew to 8' 6" and the tall cages did a good job holding them up. You can plant several cucumbers per cage/hill, they'll climb up the wire, produce some really nice fruit that's held off the ground and easy to pick........ Donald

  • Great!!!!!Never thought of it that way. This is a whole lot better than drowning the plant's,and I'm going to use this all over my garden next year...To bad i'm going to have to wait til next spring....Thank's for sharing all your knowledge with everyone...

  • @lkerley2006 ... I use the PVC mostly for tomatoes and cucumbers, which are also planted in cages. Takes a lot less water because it soaks into the soil rather than running off in the middles........Donald

  • @tydieUAE ... the fun part about gardening is you learn something new each season. Glad you enjoy the videos and stick with it.......Donald

  • hi Im 28yr old out of Mulberry Grove, IL a Beginner gardener

How in the world do you keep you huge garden so weed free

I watch your video's a lot and I see your garden is clean as can be

How do you keep it like that

    Jeremy

  • @djigloo618 ... Hey Jeremy, I use my tiller between the rows and a hoe between the plants. It's easy and doesn't take nearly as much time as folks think........Donald

  • You planted the tomato sprout very deep, where I've always been told to never plant deeper than original level, as it shocks the plant or will rot the stalk. I also noticed that you cultivated corn in the same way, sweep the dirt on top of the plant. You said that you had lost some tomatoes earlier. Also reminded me of your tomato plant height contest ;) Well, I just wanted to ask. Gosh, you've got me interested in gardening now... Thks..

  • @saintveil ... tomatoes, corn, okra, potatoes don't mind dirt pulled up to their stems. In fact is you don't hill potatoes they won't make many. This year my tomato plants only got up to 8' 6" and I lost again. The winning plant was 10+ feet tall....... Donald

  • I could watch you all day, I love your videos. Thank you so much. So many other videos are so fast paced, I feel stressed out cause I can't keep up. I love your videos 'cause I feel like your my buddy and your showing me some tricks. No one ever taught me how to garden, I had to figure out everything by myself, and I have wasted a lot of time doing dumb things. Thank you so much for helping me with your great videos.

  • @chicofrijoles ... keep things simple, stick to the basics and you'll do just fine. Glad you enjoy the videos.......Donald

  • Great video I'm just wondering do u sell the food at the farmers market or somthing just go to my page a tell me ur answer very good video keep up the good work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!::):)):):):):):):):

  • ? I have a lot of brown ants in one part of my garden. I planted lettuce there and they do not seem to damage the plants should I worry about the ants? Any suggestions would be appreciated. How is the oil eruption affecting you?

    Rob New Jersey

  • @Mr2wings ... Hey Rob, I'm not too crazy about having ants in the garden so I usually try to get rid of them. The oil eruption is going to affect us all one way or the other. Just about everyone in that area depends on the Gulf and Marsh for a living. It doesn't look good at all...... Donald

  • 2 taps only!

  • @Mr2wings ... that's all it takes.....Donald

  • Great video! I built one, but I also put a removable cap on the watering end with a small hole in it, that let's the water drip out instead of stream. Keep up the great videos!

  • @weirdarmadillo ... excellent idea as long as you don't have too many of them to fill. LOL...... Donald

  • I am using this for my peach tree and its doing great. Thanks for sharing.

  • @goldenacres08 ... I too planted a couple of trees and using them to water. Allows the water to go straight down into the roots...... Donald

  • thats a great idea your videos are a real help around my place keep up the good work

  • @shanewald ... these things work great especially during a dry spell....... Donald

  • sUPER IDEA...THANK YOU EVER SO MUCH... NEW FAN OFF TO MY FAVORITES WITH YOU ...MARCH!! GB!!Roxanne

  • @JustaThought2010 ... Glad it was helpful and you're welcome........ Donald

  • i dont know if its true or not but i heard bad stuff could leech out of the pvc but i dont think so

  • @racjarrett88 ... If that's true then lots of us are in trouble. There are millions and millions of homes with PVC plumbing. I wouldn't worry about it........ Donald

  • @cornbreadwillie ... really works well, glad you enjoy....... Donald

  • I'm making mine this weekend! Thanks for all the great vids!

  • @lowphoenix ... I just planted some trees around the place and using them to water. Bet you'll find other uses for em too........ Donald

  • I love it when my seedlings are that tall. Planting them the deeper the better.

    Great video as always.

  • @MrLarryHorse ... thanks and glad you enjoyed........ Donald

  • I was just thinking, after you fill up the irrigation tube with water try putting a cap on top with a small hole in it, that way the water will take 3 times longer to come out, its just an idea :-)

  • Never thought about that, good idea.......... Donald

  • Thank you Mr.Donald definitely will try.Thank you for your advice and wonderful videos:)Greetings,Rimma4

  • You're welcome ....... Donald

  • Great.Now I know how to make it:)Thank you5*****

  • I'm told that consistent watering (not too much or too little watering) is the key to a good crop. This probably makes sense for just about any vegetable. For tomatoes, I make a depression in the row that holds water and allows it to soak down into the root system....... Donald

  • I had a similiar thing but didn't put the cap on it and I push the pipe into the soil for deep watering. Nice!

  • Planting in a bowl like depression keeps the water from running off allowing it to soak down into the root system....... Donald

  • Thank you for given me reply

  • Thanks Donald, You have a wealth of knowledge., I planted tomatoes befor one and half month ago So. Now I use this pipe for that?

  • Try it on a few and see if you like the results before making a bunch of em........ Donald

  • Hey Donald, I live in the low desert and my tomatoes crack all the time. I was told because I water them to much. Could this be true? I usually dump a gallon of water once a day on them.

Did I mention I was new to gardening? Thanks

  • During the summer when we got no rain I was giving them about 1/2 gal. a day. Sometimes every other day. Guess it depends how well your soil drains. Too much water is probably just as bad as too little.

I'm told that consistent watering will prevent tomatoes from cracking. I had very few crack last season using this method. Also, some varieties crack more than others............ Donald

  • your not fat your just husky haha :D

  • Well let's just say real, real husky. lol ....... Donald

  • Just wanted to point out that 4 feet of pipe with a 1.5 inch inside diameter will hold 340 cubic inches (about 6 quarts) of water.

I love the videos, keep them coming.

  • May want to recalculate, I fill almost 5 tubes with 2 gals. of water......... Donald

  • Found My problem, Using the wrong formula for the volume of a cylinder, and I'm an engineer (for shame!) You sir are correct, should be 1.46 quarts. Need to know how long they will drip water so I can leave plants at home here in the AZ heat

  • If I remember correctly it takes between 2-3 minutes for the water to drain out with a 1/64 inch hole. Works best if you plant in a small depression (furrow) to avoid any runoff......... Donald

  • With this system, how often do you water?? Thanks!

  • During the 6 weeks of no rain we had in the summer I was filling each tube once a day. That was keeping the full grown plants going and producing. Only a hand full of tomatoes split this year. Best I've ever done........ Donald

  • Thanks Donald, You have a wealth of knowledge and love your sense of humor and advice.

  • That was a awesome idea. Thanks Donald

  • this is really helpful!!!

  • Thanks ........ Donald

  • Good system. We usually use gallon water or milk jugs with a small nail hole on the side near the bottom.

  • Anything that allows the water to seep out will work. I've saved enough on the water bill to pay for the PVC this year....... Donald

  • This seems like a great system. But can u think of a way to do this sustainably? It makes me cringe to use that much plastic.

  • I guess you could always use a watering can........ Donald

  • excellent idea!

  • Works very well........ Donald

  • Rustico, I believe what you're referring to is touching the seedlings from time to time to make the plants stockier. Some growers recommend brushing an arm or a hand over the seedlings; they supposedly don't get as leggy.

  • Aussie here. Watching the vid and reading the comments, have learned heaps. I used to grow great tomatoes, but with our ongoing drought, the past few years have been poor. This method of planting them deep is new to me. A question. It looks as if you do not remove the seedling from the pot when you plant. Is that so, or just my eyesight failing me yet again?

  • Plant your tomatoes deep and if all possible remove at least the bottom of the peat pot before planting.......... Donald

  • Here's an off topic trivia question or maybe just nonsense, Donald:

Have you ever heard of "switching" the tomato plants? I heard this way back from someone I know was from the south. I think I can remember that the person who said it was from Arkansas. It was as if the tomato plants were beaten with a stick when they reached a certain stage. The only thing I have done, at times, is pinch the growth out between branches and only because I read to do that. Don't know what it is for?

    Russ

  • Sorry Russ but I've never heard of anyone beating their tomato plants with a stick. I could very well be wrong but I think someone was pulling your leg.......... Donald

  • Well Don, I am the don't believe it until you see it type so it's always remained nothing more than a curious item ...something to ponder now and then. . Great videos Don.

    Thanks

    Russ

  • thats soooo cool

  • 2-liter bottles as in 2 liter soda bottles???

  • That's correct........ Donald

  • Thats a great idea. I noticed when you planted the massive seedling you planted it quite deep. Is there some rule for how deep to plant seedlings? I don't know much about gardening but i've been growing my own tomato seedlings and i just plant them to the level that the dirt in the seedling pot is. Is this the wrong way to do it?

  • The deeper you plant a tomato the more roots will form along the stem. I also plant deep so it'll get moisture in dry spells. I usually put 3/4 of the plant in the ground regardless the size....... Donald

  • Great technique. Looks like it would be very efficient for far-spaced plants.
