No wonder he's active - he's trying to figure out how to get out of that tiny tank and strangle the idiot who trapped him in there. Come on, aquariums are usually a lot more humane than this...
It seems to be a trend of having small tanks for this specific octopus species...that can generally grow to 8-14 ft. arm span. The Adventure Aquarium (New Jersey) and New York State Aquarium both house giant octopus as well with very small tanks, so the octopus only grows to about as large as its tank. Its been made clear by aquarists that they dont "need" large tanks in terms of surviving and comfort, however, it wouldnt hurt to have bigger spaces with more enrichment options for the animal
OMG every freakin time I watch another thing about giant octopus, I see another nit wit whining about his tank space...again for the millionth time...octopus are not big on territory, they have little stamina, and they would rather sit in a hole all day waiting for food to come by than expend energy swimming. They don't need a lot of space because they can fit their body into any nook and cranny, and they prefer it that way...professional keeper at a zoo know more than youtube ding bats...yeesh
@FiestyCat86 That is true, but octopi are also extremely intelligent creatures and a tank THAT small would torture the octopus, for it most definitely does not have the proper stimuli available, unless they take him/her out of there into a larger play area on a regular basis.
@rooftoptile04 thats why they have enrichment. They give them jars to open, mussels to crack, toys to explore. They don't need to be stressed out and removed from their home to be entertained.
@rooftoptile04 Octopus are like skunks, they only ink as a last resort when they are sure that their lives are in danger. They are intelligent enough to know their keepers by sight and taste, and unless they are mistreated they have no reason to ink.
@rooftoptile04 Oh me too. And believe me if it were a dolphin or a shark in there I'd be down right outraged about it. But I did do a little research and I found that an octopus have extremely low oxygen levels in her blood, meaning she's got maybe five minutes max of stamina for physical activity. Otherwise she's happy to just explore what nearest to her, and to eat until she fat and healthy enough to have babies. Sorry i did sound like kinda a know it all...my bad.
@rooftoptile04 Oh believe me I know...those seems to be far and few between with the typical you tube commenters. If they aren't cussing you out and calling you all kinds of names because they have no idea how to back that they say, they're spouting false information and making stupid observations. But hey you are a breath of fresh air. Thank you.
