@redsoxrock1112@redsoxrock1112 - firstly the word is 'Weird' not Wierd, but then this is not surprising from someone whose imagination only flows as far as a sports team for their username. Perhaps you should join me in saying a simple thank you, as I personally find all the reviews helpful and professional.
im curious if the G9 will allow Flash Exposure Compensation on its built in flash - i dont want to use the external but I still want Flash Compensation for its built in flash.
you may have already found this out but I will answer anyway. Yes it does, when you are in flash mode the exposure compensation function changes to flash exposure compensation. Hope tis helps
my brother got this for me about the time that it was released in China and looking at it now, the price is cut in half... Brother got it for 10 000 (EEK) or more (EEK is the currency of Estonia)... it's a nice camera. The videos you can make look good and sound good. The built in mic worked better than i thought it would be :D Lot's of cameras and mp3 players have had the mic but alot of them haven't worked that well
i really enjoy this camera- have written a very long review on amazon for it. but in short it's fantastic for all kind of photography, and i've taken some nice night shots as well. these days i'm only making time lapse videos- posted on my profile :-). my suggestion would be to NOT buy the lense accessories. it only adds to the weight (makes it bigger than a basic dslr!) for wide shots you can use the Tv setting- allows for a wide shot! love this camera!

Very nice review, i just have a quick question for you if you can answer please. I been using this camera for over a year now, no major probs i love it. due to your in depth review which was very very good i have invested in a G9 and love it thanks again i got it for the time lapse which the G10 does not have
I'm thinking of getting a G( but have heard of problems with dust on sensor/lensmalthough on one review the guy said the sensor and lens were factory sealed..what do you think??.
RAW is uncompressed data as is from the sensor. After when you're back at home you have to post process the image to generate a picture so over all it's a lot akin to shooting with film and developing later. The main advantage is that you can do so much more to adjust a RAW image right down to white balance. Point & Shoot users won't care (or will even dislike it because of the required post work) but enthusiast users almost demand it as fervently as they demand manual control.
hey thanks a lot. i thought it was something really bad. i am kind of a point and shoot kind of guy so it won't really matter to me but who knows maybe i would like the post work and learn from it. maybe later i'll get one that supports RAW. once again thanks; i thought no one would answer :)
Not at all - glad it helped! RAW is fun to play with and once you store some preset routines for your camera it really doesn't take that much time to do the post processing. I think the pictures come out slightly better in general and you can rescue pictures that would otherwise have been lost causes. Another downside of RAW that I forgot to mention is the file size. Just as an example on my camera shooting a 12mp JPEG comes out to 4mb. Shooting a RAW image takes up 14mb - 3x the size.
Aye I've been looking at that, it's looking very nice, of course the problem is the horrific noise of the LX2 (your review was the main reason I didn't buy an LX2, in fact). Unless the new sensor is something special then I'll probably hold out for what Canon are offering. On a different subject, the Nikon D40 is currently £207 from Amazon in the UK - with the cashback.
Say hi to your gorgeous missus for me, she's the real reason I visit your website daily.
Hi, they're really different cameras - check out the full reviews of each at cameralabs . com, then if you have any Qs, feel free to post in the cameralabs forums...
btw, i returned the adapter and telephoto lense- no point using attachments with this one- negates the purpose of having a small camera. it is fantastic to carry it as is. down the line i may buy one of those nikon prosumer cameras, but for now, this is GREAT!
it has all the ease of any point and shoot cam PLUS, if you really want to learn about photography, it has all the funactionality of a manual camera. Thats what sealed the deal for me. btw, using very easy consumer feature, i made my first time lapse film. check on my youtube page. now, i'll check experiment with manual features. as cnet says is, it is zippy but built like a tank!
I got teleconverter lense for G9. i hv couple of questions in case anyone can answer. 1. on the setting on camera, do I keep it at TC-DC58C (teleconverter) or LA-DC58H (adapter)? 2. I,m just about switching from 35mm roll camera- enjoyed taking pix with it esp where I focus on leaves/flowers & everything else would be a blurr. HOW do I get that sort of effect on G9? I get very clear pix, but i want that surroundings-blurred effect.
To get the blurred background effect, you put the G9 in aperture priority mode and choose the smallest f-number. To accentuate the effect, zoom the lens in and get close to your subject. BUT you'll find compact digital cameras have a much larger depth of field than 35mm cameras, so it won't be as easy to get that blurred effect. See our website dslrtips . com for advice...
so worth buying? im wanting one but a curious about the shape and size, too big or not that bad and b has it got enough in it to be worth that much, i mean i think it does but just tomake sure! Any advice?
I just purchased a Canon G9 based in-part on your recommendations. I compared the Canon S5 with the G9. The Canon S5 has a 1/2.5 CCD and the G9 has a 1/1.7. The G9 has a larger CCD as compared to the S5. Photos of the same object taken with each camera saved at 8.0 MP (3264x2448) would seem to favor the G9 as it has more pixels to start. Would you expect better quality from the G9 by saving pictures with fewer pixels? Would this be true of all high MP cameras? Doug-Kennewick, WA, USA.
Hi Doug, you'd hope so, but think about the geometry of the photosites on the sensor. In order to produce a group of, say, four to increase sensitivity, you'd need to quarter the effective resolution. So sadly decreasing the resolution won't make much difference to sensitivity, but you may still want to do some tests of your own. We'd be interested in seeing your results on the Cameralabs forum...
very Nice reviews and explained very well. I have the canon 5D and use the canon EF 28-300 most of he time. I have got the G9 and it floats around in the car for snappy shots whe needed, it is a great camera and gives very nice results even if you are looking at doing some macro work. The noise I will agree can be seen over 400 ISO but as stated in the video you do have to be a pixel picker. Nice video by camera labs and good web site.
The optical zoom is locked once you start recording, but a digital zoom providing further magnification is available once you start filming. See our full review at the Cameralabs site for details.
Like the G7 before it, the optical zoom is locked once you start recording, but a digital zoom providing further magnification is available once you start filming.
One item not mentioned about the G9. It is a slight bit heavy because it is made of titanium, not plastic. It doesnt have a cheap feel to it. I added a Lensmate hood and grip to it and it rocks. Best camera I have ever owned.
I thought I read on the net that it was titanium, but I am unable to verify this.
Yes, it is a metal body, and has a much better feel than the plastic of many consumer cameras (and some professional ones also). Steel would not make sense because of the weight, but I do not know what Canon used, they have certainly used titanium for other point and shoot cameras in the Canon line.
I havent really spent time with it at all. I am not fully utilizing all the features, but the menus seem great, and the camera feels good in my hands(a priority for me). I wish Canon had included a way to protect the lens (google: LENSMATE) I bought one. The 32Meg memory card is of course useless, you need something else (I bought an 8Gig SDHC card) BTW, Canon somewhere in the specs says that it can address 4Gig of memory, it can actually address 8Gig
Hmmm, good question... the timelapse uses auto exposures, so it depends on how well it handles very low light in auto. I had the time-lapse working in pretty dim light, but it wasn't pitch dark. There's some G9 owners on the Cameralabs forums if you fancy asking there...
Excellent reviews you have done, I love Canon products. In my opinion they blow any other brands out of the water. I currently own a Canon Powershot sd1000
I thank you for this awesome review, as well as the others!
This video is what made me decide on the G9
and I got it for christmas!
I have always been into photography and wanted something simple yet sophisticated in technology. Thank you for helping me make my experience in photography so much better!
Hello! First of all great reviews! I kinda outgrew my Powershot G2 so I wanted to go DSLR but found out it's too bulky and heavy, so I'll go with G9. Can you just tell me, if this is a good idea? I like fast lenses of G2 but don't really like how the whole camera is slow as a snail.
Depends what you're looking for really. Check out our feature on whether you should buy a DSLR or a compact at the Cameralabs website. There's also several G9 owners on our forum...
Thank you for a wonderful review. Can you tell me how intuitive is the manual focusing on this camera? I'm currently torn between this and the Nikon P5100. When will you be reviewing that camera? Thanks
I can't speak for the Nikon, but on the G9, you just turn the rear wheel in MF mode - there's full details on the Features page of our G9 review at the Cameralabs website.
Lenses? are there lenses on the market for this? Also Macro photography would this be a good camera for that? I appreciate your help and great review!
The G9's coverage can be widened or extended using two optional converter lenses. The TC-DC58C tele-converter applies a 2x magnification, delivering a maximum equivalent focal length of 420mm, while the WC-DC58B wide converter applies a 0.75x factor, allowing the G9 to deliver a widest equivalent focal length of 26.25mm. You can find out lots more by reading our full review at the Cameralabs website.
Yes it does. If you visit the Cameras menu on the Cameralabs website you'll see listings of all the main models and their specs including whether they take SDHC. As I said below though, most new cameras will take SDHC.
I have been researching the G9 for months and suddenly I get to a really stupid question: What is the difference between an SDHC memory card and an SD memory card?
SDHC means SD High Capacity - they're just bigger cards, but if you'd like to use them it's important that your camera is compatible. Most models these days are SDHC compatible, although some older card readers may not be.
Hello Gordon, In the result section of the link given in the description of this video. On the bottom of the page, we can see two images taken by G9, including one is RAW and one in JPEG. i personally can not see much difference between the two images. Is the RAW really as RAW (the DSLR one)?
The image quality is good, but there are other compacts which can match it. What the G9 offers though is better controls and support for things like RAW. There are several G9 owners on the Cameralabs forums if you'd like to ask any questions...
Love your reviews! Thanks a lot. By the way, are you planning on reviewing the Canon A650 IS any time soon? And assuming you've used the A650, which do you think is worth buying,if one had to choose?
I haven't tested the A650 IS so can't really comment. Canon launches so many cameras it's impossible to do them all! But as you've noticed, the A650 IS has the same 12 mpixel sensor as the G9 AND also has a flip-out screen...
Using the best quality VGA mode at 30fps, you'd get around ten minutes on a 1GB card - but this is an approximate figure. If you reduce the quality you can record for longer, but the G9 does have a limit of 1hr per clip.
Excellent review - I have a new G9 - am very happy with it and am surprised to see only 3 video clips on the G9 on Youtube ... Time Lapse ... Audio Recording ... It's the cat's meow people. No one wants to lug a 35 mm DSLR "just in case." I'll post videos with mine soon.
The G9 is probably good, but some things anoying me, like why it has 1600 iso but maximum it can use is 200-400 without noise?? the G-serie isn´t what was. I´ve seen some pictures from the G9 and my opinion.. yeah you know it
Hi, 1/2500 means 2500th of a second. That's the fastest exposure it can make. Most DSLRs will do 1/4000, but 1/2500 is still very quick. It doesn't reflect the speed of operaiton and handling though, so still check one out in person.

So sadly decreasing the resolution won't make much difference to sensitivity, but you may still want to do some tests of your own. We'd be interested in seeing your results on the Cameralabs forum...

Thanks for the great conclusion at the end! Seems like a good camera for me now that the Powershot S-series is gone.

very Nice reviews and explained very well.

Can it zoom in & out while recording?
lilmissAbrilteapot 3 years ago
The optical zoom is locked once you start recording, but a digital zoom providing further magnification is available once you start filming. See our full review at the Cameralabs site for details.

What is the shutter lag time?
What do you think about the movie mode quality of the Powershot G9 (640 x 480 30fps) compared to the quality of Sony's MPEGMOVIE VX?
amandacatholic 3 years ago
Oooops.. I forgot, it's MPEGMOVIE VX FINE.
amandacatholic 3 years ago
MPEGMOVIE VX FINE (the one with 30 fps)
amandacatholic 3 years ago
I've replied to this on your post on the PowerShot S5 IS review.
cameralabs 3 years ago
The 640x480 movies I have shot were absolutely top notch. Beats the pants off my Sony DSC-T10.

Is there anyway to zoom during shooting a movie?
realmiidoo 3 years ago
Like the G7 before it, the optical zoom is locked once you start recording, but a digital zoom providing further magnification is available once you start filming.
cameralabs 3 years ago
One item not mentioned about the G9. It is a slight bit heavy because it is made of titanium, not plastic. It doesnt have a cheap feel to it. I added a Lensmate hood and grip to it and it rocks. Best camera I have ever owned.
engineer57 4 years ago
but is it hard to use?
looks pretty advanced, piece a kit.
NorWay707 4 years ago
Are you sure its body is made of titanium? Isn't it a more common metal, like steel?
stanhauser 4 years ago
I thought I read on the net that it was titanium, but I am unable to verify this.
Yes, it is a metal body, and has a much better feel than the plastic of many consumer cameras (and some professional ones also). Steel would not make sense because of the weight, but I do not know what Canon used, they have certainly used titanium for other point and shoot cameras in the Canon line.
engineer57 4 years ago
you havent answered my question.
is it hard to use?
or you have to spend 5 hours before u can really use it the way you want?
NorWay707 3 years ago
I havent really spent time with it at all. I am not fully utilizing all the features, but the menus seem great, and the camera feels good in my hands(a priority for me). I wish Canon had included a way to protect the lens (google: LENSMATE) I bought one. The 32Meg memory card is of course useless, you need something else (I bought an 8Gig SDHC card) BTW, Canon somewhere in the specs says that it can address 4Gig of memory, it can actually address 8Gig

is it possable to timelaps in the dark?
tw28st 4 years ago
Hmmm, good question... the timelapse uses auto exposures, so it depends on how well it handles very low light in auto. I had the time-lapse working in pretty dim light, but it wasn't pitch dark. There's some G9 owners on the Cameralabs forums if you fancy asking there...

AzzQim 4 years ago
Depends what you're looking for really. Check out our feature on whether you should buy a DSLR or a compact at the Cameralabs website. There's also several G9 owners on our forum...

Thank you for a wonderful review. Can you tell me how intuitive is the manual focusing on this camera? I'm currently torn between this and the Nikon P5100. When will you be reviewing that camera? Thanks
99tollap 4 years ago
I can't speak for the Nikon, but on the G9, you just turn the rear wheel in MF mode - there's full details on the Features page of our G9 review at the Cameralabs website.
cameralabs 4 years ago
Lenses? are there lenses on the market for this? Also Macro photography would this be a good camera for that? I appreciate your help and great review!

There's only two converter lenses for the G9. Check out our full review at the Cameralabs website for all the details!

I am thinking of buying the Wide Converter WC-DC58B for my new G9 but the thing is, I don't know what it does. What does it do?
teachereater 4 years ago
The G9's coverage can be widened or extended using two optional converter lenses. The TC-DC58C tele-converter applies a 2x magnification, delivering a maximum equivalent focal length of 420mm, while the WC-DC58B wide converter applies a 0.75x factor, allowing the G9 to deliver a widest equivalent focal length of 26.25mm. You can find out lots more by reading our full review at the Cameralabs website.
cameralabs 4 years ago
Does the G9 support SDHC?
teachereater 4 years ago
Yes it does. If you visit the Cameras menu on the Cameralabs website you'll see listings of all the main models and their specs including whether they take SDHC. As I said below though, most new cameras will take SDHC.

Hello,
i want buy a digital camera so i have to choose a Canon s5 IS or Canon G9.
I want use a movie mode in cameras and i want to have low noise on photos.
What will be better to me?
Sory for my English..
simsons90 4 years ago
I have been researching the G9 for months and suddenly I get to a really stupid question: What is the difference between an SDHC memory card and an SD memory card?
teachereater 4 years ago
SDHC means SD High Capacity - they're just bigger cards, but if you'd like to use them it's important that your camera is compatible. Most models these days are SDHC compatible, although some older card readers may not be.
cameralabs 4 years ago
Hello Gordon, In the result section of the link given in the description of this video. On the bottom of the page, we can see two images taken by G9, including one is RAW and one in JPEG. i personally can not see much difference between the two images. Is the RAW really as RAW (the DSLR one)?
hanzakbar 4 years ago
Hi hanzakbar, there's not much difference using the default settings, but the whole point of RAW is being able to tweak to a much greater extent.
cameralabs 4 years ago
Do you think this camera would give the best image quality amongst compact camera?
artgoi 4 years ago
The image quality is good, but there are other compacts which can match it. What the G9 offers though is better controls and support for things like RAW. There are several G9 owners on the Cameralabs forums if you'd like to ask any questions...

Love your reviews! Thanks a lot. By the way, are you planning on reviewing the Canon A650 IS any time soon? And assuming you've used the A650, which do you think is worth buying,if one had to choose?
yaayaavara 4 years ago
I haven't tested the A650 IS so can't really comment. Canon launches so many cameras it's impossible to do them all! But as you've noticed, the A650 IS has the same 12 mpixel sensor as the G9 AND also has a flip-out screen...
cameralabs 4 years ago
canon S5 IS can do a macro of 0cm

cameralabs 4 years ago
how long can you record a video if for example you have 1GB SD card??? tnk you
kiloms 4 years ago
Using the best quality VGA mode at 30fps, you'd get around ten minutes on a 1GB card - but this is an approximate figure. If you reduce the quality you can record for longer, but the G9 does have a limit of 1hr per clip.
cameralabs 4 years ago
thank you for your reply =)
kiloms 4 years ago
Excellent review - I have a new G9 - am very happy with it and am surprised to see only 3 video clips on the G9 on Youtube ... Time Lapse ... Audio Recording ... It's the cat's meow people. No one wants to lug a 35 mm DSLR "just in case." I'll post videos with mine soon.
aspietoo 4 years ago
Great job on the review, very helpful. Considering the G9 or splurging on a 40D and the hassle of its weight and interchangeable lenses.
On the other side is the new SD950 (U.S. model name) which has the same sensor and most of the same features with less zoom.

Yeah were all so impressed that you have a G6, im sure now your life is complete.
Incontrast30 4 years ago
The G9 is probably good, but some things anoying me, like why it has 1600 iso but maximum it can use is 200-400 without noise?? the G-serie isn´t what was. I´ve seen some pictures from the G9 and my opinion.. yeah you know it

i looked threw them but didn't find what i was looking for..
i see the shuter speed is 1/2500 sec
in real life what is that 2.5 sec ? or less?
can i change the speed of the shutter to make it take faster pic's
1exotic 4 years ago
Hi, 1/2500 means 2500th of a second. That's the fastest exposure it can make. Most DSLRs will do 1/4000, but 1/2500 is still very quick. It doesn't reflect the speed of operaiton and handling though, so still check one out in person.
cameralabs 4 years ago
REALLY :D :D :D
