Too fast for his technique. Pitches, which sound in tune, are hard to hear and the tone ends up being rough in many places. Today he would be a god compared to the current collection of clods but there are many better and much more musical technicians mostly born earlier than he.
@concertviolinist he was slower than Menuhin too at wieniawski's scherzo tarantelle..although he was a bit slower , heifetz makes different sound and i believe that's what makes him the best.
Heifetz is simply the best technician to have ever lived.I mean the portamento, the spiccato and that fiery, vibrant vibrato make for an unbeatable combo!
Eeeek! Wonderful stuff. Only equal us maybe Milstein—but that could be the Strad / Guarneri argument again! Lovely to think that the two finest performances are both from Auer pupils...

Wrong entrance by a wind player at 2:16--but he caught on!
Dazzling as always. Right up Mr. Heifetz' sleeve.

For once Mr Heifetz was slower than someone else - in this case, slower than Michael Rabin

heifetz and his mania of putting the mic really really close. I'm sure this recording sounded much clearer than it seems.

how do you hate this piece? It's a wonderful work, and I agree the Heifetz interprets it his own way. I especially love the way he ended it.
