Watch the fuel barrel on the jet engine. Look at the fuel level on the black sticker to the left, watch it drink that fuel fast toward the end as the level falls below the sticker on the left of the barrel.
To add on my comments, I reved my old Fiat TC without coolant to 7200rpm, cause I tried to find why only 2 cylinders fires. I stopped far from cylinder head temperature coming into operating temperature. Reason for 2 cylinders not firing, was that I had installed HALL-sensors wrong. When I switched sensors between, it fired at once with all cylinders. Self installed Hestec system with wasted spark ignition. Works perfectly now.
@NesteHukka2 Just to know that motor, when power is not taken out of it, doesn't heat so much. It is different case, if throttle is thrown to full and only mechanical physics keep revolutions at certain maximum...
I am neither pilot nor mechanic, but isn't it a strain on the prop engine (the Wright Cyclone?) to have it running without some kind of weight(s) on the drive shaft, such as propellers (or some kind of replacement/display counterweight)? Is it not overworking and unbalanced because of this?
I've always known fork lift trucks to have many handy uses..but being used as a platform in the testing of a jet engine was definitely NOT one of them !! Brilliant footage..thanx for posting !! Rx
@WildeTanteAnna See how to start a Radial engine. Not the way you do it! Usual before starting a radial engine, you have to put a dynamometer or a special Torqueprop on the shaft. The way you start this engine , is damaging a Radial engineby overtorque!!!Read the Maintenance manual of this engine. Check the firing order.
By radial engines is this always.1,5,7,9,2,4,6,8,
Also that fueltank by that jetengine is getting vacuum.
Hello, what is the humming sound that precedes the noisy startup of the Cyclone radial engine? Are you priming the engine, or cranking the engine without ignition before you start? If it is the latter, why crank the engine for 1 or 2 revolutions first without getting it to fire?
@joraircraft Bottom cylinder filled with oil? Looks like maybe the engine survived by blowing head gasket instead??? I have seen onsite as mechanics drained oil from bottom cylinders, and as said turned by hands the engine several cycles before start. Lubrication system of these engines is quite a mystery to me, interested, if you or anyone can tell something about it.
I believe this engine is very similar to the Ash-62 IR (soviet version, for An-2, Dromaders, Polikarpovs, etc)!~
It's a dry sump engine with an external lubricant fluid reservoir, nevertheless when you stop the engine for a long period (some hours, depending on ambient temperature, oil grade and engine wear) the remaining oil on the upper part of the engine travels downwards to the bottom cylinders through the rings, filling the space between the piston and the cylinder head.
I believe this engine is very similar to the Ash-62 IR (soviet version, for An-2, Dromaders, Polikarpovs, etc)!
The oil is incompressible, so when you turn the engine with the starter, the cylinders on the bottom with valves closed will have no space for the piston to do the full travel until the top dead center (something will be broken).
Thats why you should remove the spark plugs and turn manually the engine to allow the oil to be drained.
And by the way do not start it without the propeller, the engine has no flywheel itself and and the cylinder heads get really hot.
@kaltezar How much heat do you think that engine will produce, as it uses power only to keep running? :) I am sure it doesn't warm even to normal operating temperature.
@rickmanranger Think how much power it produces at idle, and how much power it uses with prop at full power... Cooling is only needed when power is drawn
BTW - What's the Bow Saw doing @ 1:08 on on the wall of the machine shop? Maybe to trim some of the trees we see during the turbine engine test? ......My favorite part @ 1:32...... look at his face just before ignition....Then he imparts some "body-english" @1:34 to enhance the "Start"...Then he disappears in a puff of smoke....And reappears....Just like Merlin the Magician....Love it!
