@shugemery we made clackers and sold them as a DECCA fund raiser at my high school in 1971 i was in 12 grade....then they started shattering when they got 1 to 2 months old so they made us scrap all the ones we had left and i havent seen any since until your video......only 41 years ago Vietnam was raging .....funny how it all comes back.....and yes we beat the hell out of ourselfs with them things
Shug, I'm a grounder, but you really, really got me interested in this hammock thing. I'm a side sleeper though. If I sleep on my back I snore loud enough to wake up Julius Caesar. Do they work for side sleepers? Slainte!
The quilt incorporated with the cuben is awesome but since cuben isn't breathable I wonder if just the hammock should have been kept a breathable material so I warms up faster and it hugs the body better
Great video Shug! It looked like a fun trip. Have you ever done a video on how you "set-up" the night before to cook 'breakfast from the hammock'? Also, it looks like you have a ton of different stoves and I hope you do a video on the collection soon too. How do you decide which style to take with you? Thanks again for your videos and good hiking!
@MooseZ71 I have me doing it in almost all my trips! No biggie..get up and grab hung food. I keep my cook kit near me most of the time. Then I just lean out and get to it. So really no set-up the night before.
I have my favorite stoves based on ease of use, boil time and weight.
Thanks for the reply. I am 6' 6" tall and about 190lbs and get cold easily so I will be looking for a hammock with underquilt options. Any recommendations?
I just discovered your videos. Very entertaining and informative. I get a kick out of your humor. Being over 50 years old, one question comes to mind. How hard is it to get in and out of the hammock in the middle of the night when you have to relieve yourself?
Before I comment on the vid itself I see in the description this comment:
***Breakfast form the Hammock......Timmy too.***
I only bring that up because you may now me as Dash Riprock, but my real name is Timmy. @sweetypie000 Dave was Discovered by the Discovery Channel from his youtube videos that have taught many of us primitive skills that if practiced will keep us alive in survival situations. Dave went through a series of screenings at Discovery and the result was he and Cody being chosen.

Dadgum that looked like a guuuud time. Shug have you made a vid on how you make your pot kozies? I usually use a Pocket cooker in the woods but I got some alky stoves for Christmas(early) and have really taken a shine to a cat stove. First test 500 ML 55 degree water to rolling boil in 3 minutes and 45 seconds/4.5 minutes from initial lighting.(cat stoves must prime before use.) Anyway if you'll pm me links to the vid on the kozies I'd appreciate it.
Looked like fun! First time in a hammock and in the winter? Isn't that like teaching a kid to swim by throwing him in the deep end without a life vest? Trial by Cold.....lol
If I'm not mistaken that looks like Afton State Park? I was a Hammock virgin til last winter. Now I only do Hammocks!!. My first hammock experience was at Afton last winter. Awesome. Built my own pulk, Eno hammock, 0 degree bag pod, DYI underquilt and tarp. 10 degrees overnight. Slept so much better and warmer than the 'grounders'. Going again the end of Feb 2012!!! Thanks Shug for all the info you have provided.. and the laughs!!
wow that last shot looks like a cross between a scary meth lab (guess that raises the question....are there nice ones? maybe they hand out cookies and milk while you wait for it to cook) and a MN flea market. It's like an Aladdin's cave of stuff that will scar a child for life.

@Ggreenvideos I do love my BR hats....warm and about an ounce. The double set I wear is my go-to winter noggin' style but I am sure you have tons of lids living up there.

@Cphobes Yeah....I smoke in mine too!!! A practiced skill with me wee cigars. I gave Timmy the go-ahead...he was so gung-ho and we are wild fellers in real life!

i want a hammock outer liner just to act as a wind sheild and be water proof. perhaps use the space between to put clothes etc... nice video once again shug.
Yo Shug hows about a vid on what to do if there are no trees! maybe using your walking poles and your tarp to create a bivvi. A dual purpose system???? could it be possible?? A waterproof underquilt or mats to sleep on
@sparkvital1 I only will go where there are trees...otherwise I would just tarp in and make do with what I have under me. If I know no trees I would carry a fuller pad for sure.

Looks like the weather was perfect with the sun shining in the morning. That cuben hammock is sure interesting.
At 8:40 there is a set of peach coloured balls on strings...are they "Clackers"?
HangingKayaker 3 months ago
@HangingKayaker Good call))))) My Clackers from 8th grade...circa 1972. lots of forearm bruises from those things.

Yeah man you guys look like the swiss army out there in the snow : )
Just got back myself & had a glorious time. The lowest it got on us was 20F. I ended up going the ol' faithful & left the hammock at home.
Good to see you're apprentice did well out there. Heck he's a chip off the ol' Shug block. Man that food looked good. Good times buddy.
I'll try & get some video up later this week. Take care
